Adult (2 years 11 months) · Female · Terrier (long coat) · 22 mi from Plainfield

If you are looking for a loyal companion who brings an automatic dose of magic and joy into every room, Mini Hufflepuff is ready to steal your heart! True to her name, this sweet girl is incredibly devoted, kind, and always ready to make you smile.

Read more about Mini Hufflepuff TX

Mini Hufflepuff is a charming, 3-year-old terrier mix weighing in at a compact 10 pounds—the perfect size companion and an on-the-go sidekick. She was surrendered to our care by her previous elderly owners who simply found themselves with more dogs than they could comfortably provide for. Because she grew up in a multi-pet home, she has fantastic social skills and is fully house-trained. She is a social girl who walks great on a leash, and rides wonderfully in the car, making her the perfect companion for neighborhood strolls and weekend road trips!

She has perfectly mastered the balance between outdoor fun and indoor relaxation time. One of her favorite pastimes is exploring every nook and cranny of a fenced backyard. When she isn't on backyard patrol, she is usually proudly carrying her favorite squeaky toys around the house like tiny prizes. Once she has successfully burned off her playtime energy, Mini Hufflepuff expects her payment in full: epic belly rubs. She will gladly roll over and let you scratch her belly for as long as your hand can manage!

The Ideal Home:

Mini Hufflepuff is a social butterfly who fits beautifully into a family dynamic. Thanks to her upbringing, she is friendly with other dogs, coexists wonderfully with cats, and does great with older children, 7 and up, who can respect her space and join in on her toy-tossing fun. She would do best in a home with a fenced backyard where she can safely explore, sunbathe, and trot around with her toys to her heart's content. She is past the chaotic puppy phase, completely house-trained, and packed with a lifetime of love to give. In other words, she is perfect!!

5. Snowy TX

Young (9 months) · Female · Pomeranian / Husky / Mixed (long coat) · 22 mi from Plainfield

MEET SNOWY! Beautiful, Blue-Eyed and Looking for a Fresh Start!

Snowy is an absolutely gorgeous Pomsky (Pomeranian/Husky mix) who will celebrate her first birthday on Christmas Day! Weighing under 20 pounds, this fluffy little girl has stunning blue eyes, a beautiful coat and a whole lot of personality!

Unfortunately, Snowy’s life hasn’t gotten off to the best start. Through no fault of her own, she found herself needing a new home when her owner’s circumstances changed. Living in an RV with a young, energetic puppy simply wasn’t providing the space, exercise or stimulation Snowy needed.

Read more about Snowy TX

Snowy is a sweet, affectionate girl who needs an active, patient and committed home willing to provide the exercise, structure and guidance that a young Pomsky requires.

Now, here’s the important part.

Snowy has demonstrated resource and space guarding behaviors around smaller dogs and has gone after them when she feels her space is being invaded. For this reason, we believe Snowy would do best as the only dog in the home. A home with a larger, compatible dog may be considered with careful introductions and appropriate supervision.

Snowy needs room to run, opportunities to play and, most importantly, someone willing to invest the time in helping her become the best version of herself. She’s still just a puppy, and with the right environment, consistency and guidance, we hope she can thrive.

Snowy doesn’t need perfection. She needs someone who understands her needs and is willing to give her a chance. Please share Snowy’s story and help us find the home she deserves!

If you think Snow would be a good fit for your home, please complete an adoption application at http://www.northstarpets.org and be sure to mention her name!

Senior (8 years) · Female · Terrier / Mixed (long coat) · 22 mi from Plainfield

Meet Ginger, an 8-year-old scruffy Terrier mix who has brought an immense amount of joy and love to her foster home from the very moment she arrived. Fun, energetic, and endlessly affectionate, Ginger makes herself right at home immediately and runs up to excitedly greet anyone who walks through the front door. She is completely house-trained with zero accidents and loves staying active by playing with toys, running around the backyard, and going for walks. When playtime is over, this sweet girl is more than happy to curl up right next to you on the couch for a cozy cuddle session.

Read more about Kym's Ginger TX

Ginger is used to having constant company and thrives best in a home where someone will be around more often than away. She gets along wonderfully with people and other dogs, and while she hasn't lived with small children, she has always been friendly with the neighbors' kids. Due to a history of being told she is not a fan of cats, a feline-free home would suit her best. She is also not a nuisance barker, only speaking up if she spots a squirrel or a deer outside.

Having never been in a crate, Ginger is looking for a home where she doesn't have to start; she prefers sleeping with her humans and gives you plenty of personal space throughout the night. If sleeping arrangements require it, she could likely be trained to settle into a dog bed in your bedroom. Sweet, well-mannered, and full of life, Ginger is ready to bring her bright spirit to a forever family.

18. A Beckett

Young (2 years 2 months) · Male · Yorkshire Terrier Yorkie · 13 mi from Plainfield

Beckett is available for adoption. He is 2 years old and weighs 11 pounds. His adoption fee is $850.00.Hi! I'm Beckett. I was found as a stray in Harrisburg, PA but luckily SAY Rescue pulled me out of the shelter and brought me to my new foster family in Livingston, NJ! I am around 11 lbs and estimated to be around 2 years old.

Read more about A Beckett

My favorite activities are:
1. Cuddling and being close with my foster mom or foster doggy brother
2. Short walks (I'm great on a leash!)
3. Rolling around on my back and digging imaginary holes
4. Sleeping in bed between my foster mommy and daddy
My foster mommy says I'm the cutest thing ever. Just look at me! I'm not a fan of being in my crate but I will tolerate it after some whining. I am learning to play fetch and to ring the bell when I want to go outside. I get along great with my foster brother and love to chase and follow him around the yard. I do like getting all the attention, though. Whenever my foster mommy pets my foster brother, I try to wiggle in to get in on the action. I am very good at doing all my business outside but I occaisionally like to mark my territory so my foster mommy sometimes puts me in a belly band. With some consistent training, I should get over this pretty quickly and am doing much better already.
I am a playful, spunky guy that also enjoys relaxing and cuddling. I love being close and am looking for a forever home to give me all the love and attention I deserve. Could that be you?

21. Hero Sussex

Young (1 year 6 months) · Female · Chihuahua / Mixed · 23 mi from Plainfield

Hero is a 1-year-old, 6 lb Chihuahua who may be small in stature but has a hero's journey of epic proportions. She is a survivor of a mass hoarding case where over 40 tiny, but tenacious, dogs were abandoned throughout two counties in northern NJ. These resilient pint-sized pups were thrown from a vehicle into the cold winter woods alone; some trapped in cages, some left wandering. Some did not make it. Hero persevered, though, and truly earned her distinguished name. Despite being found first, this wonder woman sacrificed instant safety by eluding rescuers until she brought them to her best friend: another pup named Tiny Tim who had paralyzed hind legs and was stuck by a river. Not only does Hero deserve a home, but she also deserves a medal of honor.

Read more about Hero Sussex

Hero is luckily being fostered by her human hero, the woman who helped find and save all these dogs. Hero has come such a long way from living in a crowded basement to then being tossed into the wilderness to fend for herself, terrified and alone. It's no surprise, Hero loves other dogs so she will need to go to a home with a canine companion because a sidekick always helps a main character shine. Hero's future family will understand she is a flight risk and take proper precautions to protect her and take things at her pace. She uses a pee pad inside to go to the bathroom. She is timid and skittish but can also be outgoing when she is comfortable with her surroundings. She is a dog that does not prefer to be approached but would rather take the initiative to come to you first, roll over for belly rubs, and commandeer your lap if you let her. Once you're in, your attention and pets are all she will want! She is also hysterical and loves to play; she is super-fast and jumps around the entire house like it's a parkour course. Superheroes need to train, right? She is mischievous and does have some spunk to her. She will grab paper products and run around the house with them. Although we assume she's just trying to make herself a cape. She does like to chew so be prepared to spoil her with toys and keep away anything precious, including wires.

Hero is spayed, microchipped, and up to date on immunizations. Her adoption fee is $415. Despite being a warrior at heart, Hero finally knows what it is like to be safe and truly cared for. She is sending out the bat signal for her final protector, her ultimate lifesaver to give her a hero's welcome into a furever home. 22. Michael Phelps Sussex

Adult · Male · Jack Russell Terrier / Chihuahua / Mixed · 23 mi from Plainfield

Michael Phelps and Lima are two survivors looking for a special forever home. These adorable 10-pound Jack Russell Terrier mixes are thought to be between 2 to 5 years old. They came from a large hoarding situation in Phillipsburg and were among 40 dogs that were dumped from a truck in the middle of the night in Sussex County. Thankfully, they found their way to safety and have spent the last several months learning that people can be kind and the world doesn’t have to be scary.

Read more about Michael Phelps Sussex

Michael Phelps was very shut-down when he entered our rescue. In fact, he earned his name because when rescuers first arrived, he swam across an entire pond to get away from them before eventually being safely trapped. For over a month in foster, he wouldn’t allow anyone to touch him. Watching his transformation has been nothing short of amazing. Today, Michael is the life of the party and the biggest snuggle bug! He loves playing with other dogs, racing around the yard, and collecting as many dog toys as possible. His goofy personality keeps everyone laughing, and he’s always ready for fun.

Lima is the quieter, more reserved gentleman of the pair. Sweet, gentle, and shy, he takes a little time to trust but has a heart of gold. He enjoys the company of other dogs and thrives in a calm environment where he can continue building confidence at his own pace. Both Michael and Lima would do best in homes with another friendly dog to help show them the ropes and continue their social development.

While they are not bonded and can be adopted separately, adopting them together would likely make the transition easier for both boys and allow them to continue benefiting from the comfort and confidence they provide one another. A fully fenced yard is required, as both dogs can be flight risks when frightened. Their home should have older, considerate children only or no children at all as the unpredictable nature and energy of smaller children may overwhelm them. They will need patient adopters who understand that dogs from difficult backgrounds may need extra time to settle in and trust.

Both boys are neutered, up to date on vaccinations, microchipped, and ready to find families of their own. Their adoption fee is $415 each. Now they are looking for families who will give them the love, patience, and security they deserve for the rest of their lives so apply to adopt MICHAEL PHELPS AND LIMA SUSSEX at ehrdogs.org.

26. Rose

Adult · Female · Pug / Mixed (short coat) · 20 mi from Plainfield

Rose is estimated to be about 5 years old, and she is truly one of the sweetest girls you could ever meet. She is the kind of dog who simply wants to love and be loved—a devoted people dog whose happiest moments are spent close to her person, soaking up affection and giving it right back. Rose’s life changed in an instant when her owner passed away, leaving behind seven dogs. While family and friends were able to take in four of them, Rose and two others came into our rescue. After losing the person she knew and loved, Rose is looking for a home where she can feel safe, cherished, and part of a family again. Rose would do best in a home where someone is around more often, because being with her people is truly what she loves most. A fenced yard is also required for her. She is current on core vaccines, spayed, and microchipped. Rose came to us with double cherry eye and has already had surgery to correct it. Rose is currently in a foster home with other dogs and cats and gets along well with them.

27. Chaplin NJ

Senior (15 years 5 months) · Male · Chihuahua / Mixed · 23 mi from Plainfield

Chaplin is a loving active little guy despite being 15 years old. He was adopted 10 years ago and lived with his people and 1 cat for 9 years. His human mother died, and subsequently his dad lost his job and apartment and was having health concerns. He has been living with a foster family who have 3 golden retrievers and 5 cats with no difficulties with any of them. He is small at 9.5 lbs., loves to snuggle close on the couch, and really appreciates chin stroking. He has been around children ages 2 to 14 and is fine with them but would probably be better with older kids as he appreciates children who respect his space and understand appropriate boundaries; especially around mealtime. Chaplin is microchipped, neutered, and up to date on immunizations. His adoption fee is $205. If you have the furever home Chaplin can finally settle into, apply at ehrdogs.org and ask for CHAPLIN NJ.

28. Prospect Pete LA

Adult (5 years 2 months) · Male · Dachshund (medium coat) · 22 mi from Plainfield

PROSPECT PETE: Tiny Dog. Massive Feelings. Absolutely No Men.

Prospect Pete is a 5-year-old miniature Dachshund who was found wandering the streets of Louisiana looking like life had thoroughly kicked his little wiener-dog ass.

When NorthStar took him in, Pete was skinny, covered in hair loss, had double ear infections, needed a dental, had a growth on his chest, and frankly looked like he’d been through several terrible life choices and at least one bad relationship.

The good news? His body is healing.

The bad news? Pete has apparently decided that men are canceled.

Read more about Prospect Pete LA

We can’t know exactly what happened to him during his first five years, but we’re pretty certain a man failed this little guy in a big way. Pete would very much like to file for a lifetime restraining order against the male gender and is currently accepting applications from women only.

His ideal home consists of:
✔ Women.
✔ More women.
✔ Another friendly dog.
✔ Snacks.
✔ Soft voices.
✔ Someone who is home a lot.
✔ Absolutely no dudes trying to “win him over.”

Pete doesn’t bite men. He doesn’t attack men. He simply looks at them and says, “No thank you, sir. I’ve had enough.”

He adores other dogs and apparently every anxious little dachshund needs an emotional support dog.

He loves toys, running in the yard, car rides, and being close to his person. He sleeps quietly in his crate when he knows you’re nearby because, like many of us, he simply wants reassurance that everyone isn’t leaving him forever.

Now, let’s discuss the elephant in the room:

Pete is not housebroken.

There. We said it.

Pete wears a belly band because sometimes his feelings get bigger than his bladder. He uses potty pads when available, goes outside with encouragement, and continues to work on his life skills. He’s basically a middle-aged man who refuses therapy but is making small improvements.

He also hates cats, so if you own a cat, Pete would like to respectfully suggest that you do not.

Pete needs:
• A female-only home
• Another dog companion
• Someone home most of the day
• Patience
• Understanding
• A sense of humor
• An appreciation for tiny dogs with enormous emotional baggage

He is not a plug-and-play dog. He is a project. A tiny, adorable, traumatized, opinionated project.

But if you’re looking for a fiercely loyal little shadow who will love you with his entire crooked, anxious, dachshund heart, Prospect Pete might just be your guy.

Apply at www.northstarpets.org and ask for PROSPECT PETE LA.

Warning: Pete comes with trust issues, a loud bark, occasional accidents, and enough emotional damage to qualify for his own therapist.
