Age: 4–5 months old
Breed: Sato (Puerto Rican Street Dog Mix)
Size: Puppy (Estimated Medium when fully grown)
Good in a home with: Dogs, cats, and respectful children (with proper introductions)
Read more about Sasha
About Sasha:Meet Sasha, a brave little 4-to-5-month-old Puerto Rican Sato with a heart full of hope!
Sasha started her life facing incredible hardships on the streets of Puerto Rico alongside her sweet brother, Sam. As part of a litter of nine vulnerable street pups born to a homeless mother, he had to be a true four-legged warrior from day one. She survived harsh weather, fleas, and the daily uncertainty of street life without a safe place to lay his head.
Thankfully, rescue angels stepped in to change her fortune, flying her and Sam to safety where they received full bellies, endless love, and the medical care they needed to thrive.
Now completely healthy, fully vetted, and parasite-free, this growing puppy has left his difficult past behind. He may have a small body, but at just a few months old, she has giant dreams of finding a perfect forever home. This resilient, intelligent, and deeply loving girl is ready to bring endless affection and puppy kisses to a family of his own.
Could you be the ultimate happy ending Sasha deserves?
All dogs are located in NY/NJ area All our puppies need puppy play dates/doggy facetime so we recommend homes with other pups or daily interactions to keep them tired out, happy and social.

Dogs are spayed/neutered, UTD on age appropriate vaccines, Rabies vaxed, and microchipped (not Lyme vaxed but we seriously recommend it!) All are in the NY/NJ area but we will adopt out of state to the purrfect home and in some cases, we can arrange transport. Please go to our site https://zanisfurryfriends.org fill out an application
Many of us (cats/dogs) will be on display on Saturdays or Sundays, weather dependent--please ask by writing us at dogs@zanisfurryfriends.org and following us on FB. If you are seriously interested in adopting one of us in particular, please fill out an application early Friday so that we can be sure to be there. Otherwise we decide based on other variables. Usually we are in our foster homes so this is a bit more stressful and a slightly artificial environment but we do want to be seen and find our furever homes too.
Please consider providing a home for more than one dog, especially if you are considering adopting a puppy. Dogs are pack animals and very much enjoy as well as need other dog company to learn to play, socialize and be good companion animals to people. The upside to this is that you won't feel as guilty leaving them alone and you get twice the love. Please come! And if you can't adopt, maybe you can foster or volunteer, and you can always donate!

Meet Lucky: The Little Poodle Who’s Ready for a Big ComebackSome dogs are named Lucky because they found luck. This guy? He’s named Lucky because he is the luck — a 6yearold Mini Poodle who brings good vibes the way other dogs bring tennis balls. Life threw him a curveball when his former owner could no longer afford his care, but Lucky hasn’t let that dim his sparkle. He’s still the same cheerful, tailwagging optimist who believes every person is a friend he just hasn’t greeted yet. Lucky is wonderfully social — he gets along with people of all ages, other dogs, and even cats, and he radiates that warm, “come sit with me” energy that makes you feel instantly adored.

18. Millie
Young · Female · Chihuahua / Mixed · 13 mi from New Rochelle

Millie (AL) is only about 15 months old, but her little heart has already weathered more than most dogs ever should. This Long Haired Chihuahua mix was given away to someone who then tossed her outside for four days with no food, no water, and no kindness. When rescuers finally reached her, Millie’s sad, soulful face said everything — she had been waiting for someone to notice she mattered. And she does matter. Millie is a gentle, sensitive girl who needs a moment to feel safe with new people. She’s not shy because she’s stubborn — she’s shy because she remembers what it felt like to be forgotten.

But once she realizes you’re one of the good ones, she softens like sunshine. Her tiny tail starts to wag, her eyes brighten, and she leans in with the sweetest, quiet devotion. She’s wonderful with dogs and cats, and she finds comfort in their company. Millie would thrive in a calm, patient home where she can blossom at her own pace and learn that love doesn’t disappear. Chili is a 5 year old, 38 lb, spayed purebred girlie in need of an ACD experienced, child-free home (or older child), preferably in the VA/MD/PA area.
Chili is a very intense stereotypical cattle dog, and therefore an ACD experienced home is a must. She is living with three dog-savvy cats, three resident dogs (including her littermate sister), chickens, and goats, however, she is constantly irritating her sister, and would probably prefer to be the only dog in a home, as she is a mouthy cattle dog. She is also wary of strangers, and would love to have a quiet home without many people coming and going.
Read more about Chili
She was not happy in a more urban previous home, so her ideal home would be more rural. She is well behaved around the goats, but is very intense, and I think with training she could absolutely be used to successfully move livestock. She is very receptive to training, and is truly a joy to work with.
If you are ready for a challenge with a wonderful reward, Chili is your girl. I have truly enjoyed having her here, and working with her to become the best version of herself. If you think Chili would be a good fit, please email

20. Garlic
Adult · Male · Labrador Retriever / Boxer / Mixed · 10 mi from New Rochelle

Birthdate: 04/20/2022Breed: One of a kindWeight: 66.1 lbsCheck out My Video: Rollin’ into happinessMeet Garlic – Your New Best Friend with a Heart of Gold! With a muscular build and a perfectly imperfect off-centered forehead stripe, Garlic is the picture of charm and character. This stoic yet sweet pup has a goofy streak that’ll steal your heart in an instant. He’s the kind of dog who reminds you to slow down and enjoy the little things—like sniffing every flower on your walk or soaking up the sun with a smile on his face.Garlic is a total toy enthusiast, showing off his gentle manners and his impressive Olympic-worthy jumps whenever his favorite ball comes out.

And when playtime’s over? He’s all about leaning in for some back scratches and good company.Grateful for every friend he meets, Garlic is ready to find someone who’ll love strolls, sunshine, and snuggles just as much as he does - and a hike with endless scents and sights? His dream come true! One of our lovely volunteers wanted to share a little bit more about our Garlic. "Garlic is a sweet, gentle boy, who would play all day if you let him. He enjoys fetch and will almost hand the ball back to you . He also likes to play tug. Garlic walks nicely on the leash, and loves to sit beside you to enjoy lots of pets, he is the best boy ever!" If Garlic were a destination, he’d be Italy — bursting with life, color, and curiosity at every turn. Like Italy, he’s full of joy and warmth, always inviting you to slow down and savor the moment. He has that irresistible charm that makes you fall in love without even realizing it. Exploring with Garlic is like wandering cobblestone streets and sunlit hills — every corner holds something new, vibrant, and full of heart. Once you’ve experienced his companionship, you’ll carry the memory with you forever. A note from Garlic's rescue Buddy: His favorite things are playing catch in the play yards with balls and stuffy toys. He's really good at letting you know if he wants to play tug of war or fetch. He does not guard at all when we are out and if you simply stop tugging on a toy, he'll give it right up since he knows you'll toss it. He's also been doing well on the trail - we had a biker fly up behind us very close (almost hit us) and I got startled and shouted, but Garlic didn't even bat an eye - so proud of him! He walks like a dream on leash, and only pulls a bit when he sees a dog he wants to pull toward. Walk-ins are welcome! Stop by during our open hours to meet our available dogs!!Before you can adopt, please complete an adoption questionnaire on our website at https://petstablished.com/adoption_form/36924/generic. If you have any questions, please email us at adoptions@pawscrossedny.org for more information. Please understand that we cannot hold any pets. 25. Berti
Male · Terrier / Mixed · 10 mi from New Rochelle

**Berti is a courtesy post and is not located at or affiliated with Paws Crossed Animal Rescue Meet Berti - a 5 to 6 year old pup who is ready to steal your heart! Berti came to PAWS-LI via a high-kill shelter in NYC after being left behind in a vacant apartment by his previous owner, with only his favorite toys and treats packed up in a bag to go along with him.Berti has been diagnosed with rear leg paralysis, (he wears a diaper for dual incontinence) but with his happy, loving, and playful demeanor, you'd think he didn't even notice. He scoots around well with his upper body strength, quite easily and very quickly! When he needs assistance leaving (or returning to) the house, his foster mom helps him with his harness so he can spend time just lying around or exploring outside and taking in all the scents.
Read more about Berti
If it were up to him, he'd spend hours outside just lazing in the sun, sniffing the air.He is very emotionally intuitive, appearing at his foster mom's side when he senses she's feeling down. He loves to rest his head on everyone's lap, and better yet, would love to lie in your lap if you sit on the floor with him! When it comes time to change his diaper, he assists as best he can, lifting his hips to make it easier for you.He rides great in the car and loves sticking his nose out the window or resting his chin in-between the 2 front seats. He is good with other dogs (very forward and friendly), and unknown with cats at this time, as he has not met one since being taken in by his foster mom. He loves children, especially those who will tug on his rope endlessly with him!He is fine with being left alone in the house and has no separation anxiety whatsoever. Upon returning home, his foster mom receives the most heartfelt greeting! Sometimes his enthusiasm causes him to nearly fall over backwards! He just can't contain his happiness! Also while being left alone, he has not once "relocated" or destroyed a single thing. There is never a need to crate him.Caring for a disabled dog may not always be the easiest undertaking, but the love and appreciation (and laughs!) that Berti has to give you will definitely make up for it.If interested in learning more about him or meeting this sweet boy, please contact adoptions@paws-li.org.

Location: Littleston, PA
Duke, a 9-month-old male Heeler weighing approximately 45 pounds. Duke is neutered, up to date on all vaccinations, and current on his preventives.
While he can be shy at first, Duke warms up quickly and is incredibly sweet. He is a typical juvenile Heeler—eager to please but full of energy (occasionally earning the nickname "Duke the Destroyer" for his fondness for chewing dog beds). He has great recall and is safe around chickens, horses, cows and cats. He is also fully house-trained with a dog door, crates quietly, and loves playing with other young dogs.

Duke would thrive in a home that provides structure rather than discipline; he does not respond well to yelling or threats and needs a patient environment to feel secure. He generally prefers men, though he is friendly with women as well.
If you are looking for a dedicated jogging, hiking, or farm companion, Duke is the perfect match. He is currently located in Littlestown, PA.

Bringing a dog home to your cat
Tell the rescue about your cat: their age and how they react to dogs. A dog who has lived calmly with one cat may still want to chase a cat that runs.
Introduce them slowly. Keep them apart for the first few days and swap bedding so they get used to each other's scent, then let them meet with the dog on a leash, rewarding calm behavior.
Make sure the cat can always get somewhere the dog can't reach, like a high shelf or a room behind a baby gate, and keep the litter box and cat food out of the dog's way.
