3. French Toast
Young (1 year 1 month) · Female · French Bulldog (short coat) · 66 mi from Syracuse

French Toast came to us from Manhatten ACC after being brought in with a painful and horrible ulcer in her eye and ear infections. She was seen by our vet right away and put on medications for both her eye and ear and is doing much, much better and we are pretty hopeful she can keep her eye! We were so worried she would lose it and it’s now looking just so much better.

4. Big Al
Adult (6 years 2 months) · Male · Poodle (Standard) · 74 mi from Syracuse

Meet Big Al!
The 65-Pound Best Friend You Didn't Know You Needed!
Born August 12, 2020, Al is a 6-year-old Standard Poodle with a BIG heart of gold. And we mean BIG! This handsome guy is currently 65 pounds of lean poodle perfection and is working on putting on a little weight.
Al has never met a stranger. In fact, we're not entirely sure he understands the concept of personal space.
Everyone is his friend. EVERYONE.
The dog snarling at him from across the room? Friend!
The cat who's hissed at him 20 times and finally resorted to throwing paws? Still a friend!
The squirrel across the road? BEST FRIEND MATERIAL!
Read more about Big Al
Al is socially blind and unintentionally pushy. He takes friendship VERY seriously and believes that if he looks at you, you are now personally responsible for being his buddy until someone else comes along. Pets, attention, and affection are always on his agenda! Be prepared, he’s a BIG leaner
A little more about Al:
Dog friendly, including small dogs
Cat friendly
Kid friendly
Potty trained
Kennel trained
Ball enthusiast…when the spirit moves him
Gentle with his toys (more of a casual nibbler than a destroyer)
Low-energy overall and an oversized lapdog at heart
Loves attention and affection
Currently does great with professional grooming
Bed HOG
Al does have a few quirks and things his future family should know:
He's a bit of a puller on walks and will need a head halter or martingale collar while you continue working on that
He's an alert barker, especially at loud noises or people passing his gate. He'd really like them to come over and pet him, obviously!
Counter surfing is one of his hobbies. Keep those snacks out of reach!
He may occasionally bounce around and attempt to initiate a game of tag with a squirrel. The squirrel is generally not interested.
Let's talk Poodle maintenance!
Al is a Standard Poodle, and that gorgeous coat doesn't maintain itself. His hair grows FAST, and he will need professional grooming approximately every month to keep his coat clean, healthy, and mat-free, along with regular nail care.
He currently does wonderfully with professional grooming, so haircuts and nail trims aren't an issue for him. However, his future family needs to be prepared to either learn to groom him at home or budget approximately $80–$200 per month for professional grooming.
If you're looking for a sweet, goofy, affectionate companion who believes everyone he meets should immediately become part of his social circle, Al might just be your guy!

Koda is a sweet young guy, just over a year old, who is coming out of his shell and discovering all the fun the world has to offer! He loves long walks, sniffing all the interesting smells, playing fetch, and doing the cutest little alligator rolls in the grass. He’s embracing life one adventure at a time and showing more of his personality every day.
A little about Koda:
Age: Just over 1 year old
Vet care: Up-to-date on vaccines, testing, and neutered, he’s 32lbs

7. FiFi
Young (1 year 11 months) · Female · Bichon Frise / Poodle (Miniature) / Mixed · 74 mi from Syracuse

THERE’S NO FALSE ADVERTISING WITH FIFI!
She’s every bit as sweet, affectionate, and fun as she looks!
At just 2 years old and 12 lbs, FiFi is a little white creampuff of pure sweetness. She’s crate trained, fully housebroken, and about as easy to love as they come!
FiFi adores people AND other dogs, and she'd really love a home with other young, playful pups to run around the yard with, goof off in the house, and generally make life more fun.
Read more about FiFi
When it comes to her people, FiFi is a professional snuggler. She wants to be close, soak up all the affection she can get, and will absolutely let you know if she thinks you’re falling short on your cuddle duties.
She sleeps happily in her crate at night, but if you’re willing to share your bed, she’d be DELIGHTED to moonlight as your personal body warmer!
FiFi loves her walks and is excellent on a leash. She does have an adventurous side, though, so if she’s going to enjoy off-leash time in the yard, a securely fenced yard is a must. This little explorer likes to see what’s out there!
Honestly, what’s not to love?

16. Amelia
Adult · Female · Pit Bull Terrier · 5 mi from Syracuse

Introducing Amelia — The Miracle Pocket Pitty! Some of you may already know Amelia from our Facebook posts. This little girl came to us in dire straits, having suffered the effects of multiple stab wounds and a severe beating. An infection followed suit. It was touch and go for a while, but Amelia rallied, fought the infection — with the help of medical professionals and dedicated staff — and won the fight. Her many stab wounds have healed, the fur is growing over the scars, and perhaps most importantly her resilient spirit has allowed her to trust in the humans surrounding her and move on from what was a deplorable lot in life. Our dear little friend has emerged completely from her ordeal as the beloved shelter spitfire! She enjoys her playtime and walks and is good on leash except for dog reactivity.

25. Percy
Young (2 years 6 months) · Male · Yorkshire Terrier Yorkie / Silky Terrier (medium coat) · 74 mi from Syracuse

Hi, I’m Percy! I’m proof that you can be ridiculously adorable and still make your humans question every life decision that led them to you.
Think training a Yorkie mix means you’re getting a cute little purse dog? HAHAHAHA. Nope! Have you seen The Hunger Games? More like that!
May the odds be ever in your favor.
I’m 11 pounds, 2 years old, possibly a Yorkie mix or terrier mix, and I come equipped with BIG energy, BIG personality, radar-dish ears, and ABSOLUTELY ZERO CHILL (well unless I’m the center of your love and attention!).
The rescue is genuinely worried I’ll never get adopted because I’m such a knucklehead. (Honestly?! Yup - Fair!)
Read more about Percy
I love people, toys, playtime, walkies, attention, and cuddles. I really am the sweetest boy!
But do I have manners? HIGHLY QUESTIONABLE .
I’m working on my leash skills, potty training, and general understanding of how to function in polite society. Think less purse accessory, more tiny chaos agent with absolutely no impulse control.
I need a family with consistency, commitment to training, a great sense of humor, and the patience of 47 saints. I’m a work in progress. A VERY cute, occasionally infuriating work in progress.
But underneath all that chaos is a genuinely sweet boy who wants to love his people with his whole heart.
PERCY IS LOOKING FOR:
A family ready for BIG personality
Continued potty training and leash-manners boot camp
Lots of love, patience, playtime, and cuddles
Someone who understands that CUTE DOES NOT MEAN EASY!
Come for the ears. Stay because you’ve fallen in love with the little shit.
Think you can handle Percy? The rescue has concerns. The odds are questionable. But someone out there is brave enough for this tribute!

How to adopt from Regional SPCA
We require all interested families to come in to the shelter and meet the dog or dogs that they are interested in (unless they meet a dog at an adoption event). We have a very thorough application which they can fill out and return to the shelter - we do not provide applications on line. We check vet, personal, and landlord references (we require a signed letter from the landlord and confirmation via phone call that pets are allowed). When an application is approved, we set up a meet and greet if there are other animals in the household. If not, the kids are ready to go home. We encourage all potential adopters to spend as much time with the dog(s) as possible before they head home, and an adoption contract is signed before the dog(s) go(es) home.

Adopting a dog in Syracuse
Most rescues ask you to fill in an application, meet the dog, and pay an adoption fee that usually covers spaying or neutering, vaccinations and a microchip. Many are foster-based, so you'll often meet your dog in a volunteer's home rather than a shelter.
Senior dogs are often the calmest companions and the slowest to find homes. If you'd like a settled, affectionate dog, ask the rescues about their older residents.
Puppies go quickly, so if you've fallen for one, contact the rescue soon. Ask how big they're expected to grow, and plan for plenty of house-training and training in the first few months.
