1. French Toast
Young (1 year 1 month) · Female · French Bulldog (short coat) · 66 mi from Syracuse

French Toast came to us from Manhatten ACC after being brought in with a painful and horrible ulcer in her eye and ear infections. She was seen by our vet right away and put on medications for both her eye and ear and is doing much, much better and we are pretty hopeful she can keep her eye! We were so worried she would lose it and it’s now looking just so much better.
Read more about French Toast
She is just over 1 year old and currently hanging out in an upstate NY foster home and doing great. She is getting along well with the resident dogs, and is also super spunky and playful with the resident kitties.
She is a sweet little girl, just around a year and can’t wait to find her forever home.
All of our animals receive comprehensive veterinary care prior to adoption, including a full exam, age-appropriate vaccinations, deworming, microchipping, spay or neuter, heartworm testing, and any necessary medical treatment.
A vet reference, home and/or family visit, and an adoption fee are required.
Transport options are available within our operating region, including Pennsylvania, the tri-state area, and New England. We do not adopt animals to Canada.

2. Big Al
Adult (6 years 2 months) · Male · Poodle (Standard) · 74 mi from Syracuse

Meet Big Al!
The 65-Pound Best Friend You Didn't Know You Needed!
Born August 12, 2020, Al is a 6-year-old Standard Poodle with a BIG heart of gold. And we mean BIG! This handsome guy is currently 65 pounds of lean poodle perfection and is working on putting on a little weight.
Al has never met a stranger. In fact, we're not entirely sure he understands the concept of personal space.
Everyone is his friend. EVERYONE.
The dog snarling at him from across the room? Friend!
The cat who's hissed at him 20 times and finally resorted to throwing paws? Still a friend!
The squirrel across the road? BEST FRIEND MATERIAL!
Read more about Big Al
Al is socially blind and unintentionally pushy. He takes friendship VERY seriously and believes that if he looks at you, you are now personally responsible for being his buddy until someone else comes along. Pets, attention, and affection are always on his agenda! Be prepared, he’s a BIG leaner
A little more about Al:
Dog friendly, including small dogs
Cat friendly
Kid friendly
Potty trained
Kennel trained
Ball enthusiast…when the spirit moves him
Gentle with his toys (more of a casual nibbler than a destroyer)
Low-energy overall and an oversized lapdog at heart
Loves attention and affection
Currently does great with professional grooming
Bed HOG
Al does have a few quirks and things his future family should know:
He's a bit of a puller on walks and will need a head halter or martingale collar while you continue working on that
He's an alert barker, especially at loud noises or people passing his gate. He'd really like them to come over and pet him, obviously!
Counter surfing is one of his hobbies. Keep those snacks out of reach!
He may occasionally bounce around and attempt to initiate a game of tag with a squirrel. The squirrel is generally not interested.
Let's talk Poodle maintenance!
Al is a Standard Poodle, and that gorgeous coat doesn't maintain itself. His hair grows FAST, and he will need professional grooming approximately every month to keep his coat clean, healthy, and mat-free, along with regular nail care.
He currently does wonderfully with professional grooming, so haircuts and nail trims aren't an issue for him. However, his future family needs to be prepared to either learn to groom him at home or budget approximately $80–$200 per month for professional grooming.
If you're looking for a sweet, goofy, affectionate companion who believes everyone he meets should immediately become part of his social circle, Al might just be your guy!

3. Koda
Young (1 year) · Male · Poodle (Standard) / Mixed · 74 mi from Syracuse

Koda is a sweet young guy, just over a year old, who is coming out of his shell and discovering all the fun the world has to offer! He loves long walks, sniffing all the interesting smells, playing fetch, and doing the cutest little alligator rolls in the grass. He’s embracing life one adventure at a time and showing more of his personality every day.
A little about Koda:
Age: Just over 1 year old
Vet care: Up-to-date on vaccines, testing, and neutered, he’s 32lbs
Playtime: Loves fetch and is starting to play ball with his foster brother
Adventure buddy: Loves long walks and sniffing; he may make a great running companion!
Read more about Koda
Kids: Loves children but is still working on manners, including keeping all four paws on the floor
Dog friends: Gets along well with his foster siblings and is building confidence playing with them
Grooming: Does well with grooming
Personality: Intelligent, food-motivated, house trained, timid then curious, and ready for fun!
Koda can get spooked. So for his safety, he will need a 6ft fence.
Koda is looking for a patient, active family who will give him time to settle in, keep his mind busy, and help him build good habits. He has plenty of youthful energy and will thrive with a routine, opportunities to play, and people who are excited to help him continue growing.
He’s still discovering the joys of playing with his dog friends, but he especially loves spending time with his foster mom. Koda is ready to find his people and pack to start his next adventure!
Koda's
adoption fee is $400

10. Cosmo
Puppy (3 months 9 days) · Male · Pit Bull Terrier / Mixed (short coat) · 66 mi from Syracuse

Brindle boy Cosmo is ready for his forever family!
At just over 3 months old and a solid 25ishlbs, he’s that perfect mix of goofy and sweet. He definitely has that funny, bouncy puppy energy—he loves wrestling and playtime—but his favorite thing to do is crash right on top of you for a long nap.
He’s doing great with his puppy basics in his Upstate NY foster home, working on potty training, crate time, and leash manners. Cosmo is going to make an awesome, loyal sidekick for a very lucky family.

16. Luna
Adult (9 years) · Female · Yorkshire Terrier Yorkie / Mixed (medium coat) · 74 mi from Syracuse

Luna is a 9-year-old spayed female looking for a patient family who will give her the time she needs to feel safe. While her past wasn’t always kind to her, once she trusts you, her sweet and silly personality shines through.
Luna loves leisurely walks, lounging on the back of the couch to keep an eye on everything, and surprising her favorite people with a gentle ear lick when she wants some attention. She’s happiest spending quiet time with the people she loves.
Read more about Luna
Because Luna can be nervous in new situations, she’ll need an adopter who understands that trust takes time. Once she settles in, she’s affectionate, loyal, and full of personality. She would thrive in a calm, quiet home. She would likely do best as the only dog or with a calm, older dog who will respect her space and let her adjust at her own pace.
If you’re looking for a companion who will reward your patience with unwavering love and plenty of quirky moments, Luna may be the perfect match. She just needs someone willing to give her the chance she deserves.

18. Nanook
Senior · Male · Labrador Retriever / Husky / Mixed · 5 mi from Syracuse

From Nanook’s current foster family:Nanook is a 9-year-old husky/shepherd/lab mix VERY deserving of a loving retirement home and comfy couch. He has come into our home from an uncertain past but has proven to be sweet and calm. His eye area is still healing from a previous injury. He walks great on a leash and rides well in a car.We started him in a kennel when we weren't home, but we quickly realized he wasn't going to destroy anything so once he settles in he is safe to be trusted out of a kennel. He is great with his foster brother, they mostly ignore each other. Like a true sibling he just wants equal attention.
Read more about Nanook
He sometimes gets excited when he meets other dogs or takes a minute to warm up. We've seen no food aggression at feeding times. Nanook is very good with our child — gentle and loves to cuddle on her. We have seen no bad triggers with any kind of a person for him. Needs a home that understands husky behavior and noises, such as the-old-man-grumbles and the cute mini-howls when he wants something. Will need long-term medicine for his eye and anal fissures. Takes pills and receives eye drops without any problems. He is a perfect blend of an old man dog with bouts of a happy and playful soul!To set up a meet & greet or ask questions about Nanook, you can contact HumaneCNY at (315) 457-8762 or info@humanecny.org; or you can begin the adoption process for this great dog right now by filling out an application on our website, www.humanecny.org.Contact HumaneCNY if interested in this animal. His cherry eye corrective surgery was a huge success—he has healed up beautifully, looks fantastic, and is completely ready to move on to his forever couch.

Adopting a dog with children in Syracuse
Bring the whole family to meet the dog before you adopt, and ask the rescue how the dog behaves around children your kids' ages.
Teach children to let the dog come to them, to stroke gently, and to leave the dog alone while it's eating or sleeping. Give the dog a bed or crate of their own to retreat to, and always supervise young children with a new dog.
Relaxed adult dogs are often a better match for young children than puppies, which jump up, nip and chew while they learn.
