9. Willow

Young · Female · Terrier / Mixed

Willow (GA) would like everyone to know that her current hairstyle is a choice. A bold choice. A "just rolled out of bed and immediately started having adventures" kind of choice. This one-year-old Terrier mix may be arriving with a slightly windswept look, but underneath the shaggy exterior is a delightful young pup with a joyful outlook and enough charm to power a small city. She's the canine equivalent of that friend who wakes up smiling, has no idea where her hairbrush is, and somehow still steals the show. Willow is full of fun, affection, and goofy enthusiasm. Whether she's trotting around making new friends or soaking up attention from anyone willing to provide ear scratches, she approaches life as if every day is the best day ever.

28. Milo

Male · Terrier / Mixed

Milo (AL) is the kind of dog who makes you stop in your tracks — dark, handsome, alerteared, and carrying a story that hits you right in the chest. When rescuers found him in the shelter, Milo wasn’t just scared… he was hurt. He had been attacked by other dogs and beaten up, left bruised and battered in every way a dog can be. The kind of pain he endured doesn’t fade quickly — but Milo’s spirit didn’t break. Even with his wounds, even with the fear still fresh, he looked up at the people who came for him with a quiet plea that said, “Please don’t leave me here.” And they didn’t. Now Milo is safe.

29. Portia

Adult · Female · Pit Bull Terrier / Mixed

Here comes Portia (GA), a five-year-old mystery mix (possibly Retriever, Pit Bull Terrier, and/or Cane Corso) whose most important breed is, without question, irresistible. Portia came to the shelter with a collar so deeply embedded in her neck that it had to be surgically removed, a wound that says everything about her past and absolutely nothing about her spirit. Despite the pain and neglect she endured, Portia remains pure love. She adores people, loves other dogs, and will happily lean her 69 pounds against you as if to say, "Thank you for seeing me." The good news? Her neck has healed beautifully, and she's finally ready to find the forever family she's waited so patiently for.

Read more about Portia

Portia's DNA results are also in: she's 90% love bug, 8% house hippo, and 2% velociraptor. The velociraptor only appears during her occasional playful zoomies. While she enjoys a few bursts of fun each day, most of the time she's happy to curl up on her bed, watch TV, go for walks, spend time with dog friends, or simply be wherever her people are. She has the calm confidence of a much older dog, walks beautifully on leash, is crate trained, and has excellent house manners. She's smart, eager to learn, and, according to her foster mom, one of the sweetest, most affectionate dogs she's ever known. Portia isn't defined by what happened to her. She's defined by her resilience, her gentle heart, and her remarkable ability to love despite it all. Could those velvet ears be calling your name? Apply to adopt Portia at www.rescuedogsrocknyc.org. This Long Haired Chihuahua mix was given away to someone who then tossed her outside for four days with no food, no water, and no kindness. When rescuers finally reached her, Millie’s sad, soulful face said everything — she had been waiting for someone to notice she mattered. And she does matter. Millie is a gentle, sensitive girl who needs a moment to feel safe with new people. She’s not shy because she’s stubborn — she’s shy because she remembers what it felt like to be forgotten.

Adopting a dog in New York County

Most rescues ask you to fill in an application, meet the dog, and pay an adoption fee that usually covers spaying or neutering, vaccinations and a microchip. Many are foster-based, so you'll often meet your dog in a volunteer's home rather than a shelter.

Senior dogs are often the calmest companions and the slowest to find homes. If you'd like a settled, affectionate dog, ask the rescues about their older residents.

Puppies go quickly, so if you've fallen for one, contact the rescue soon. Ask how big they're expected to grow, and plan for plenty of house-training and training in the first few months.
