3. Curly
Adult · Male · Great Dane / Mixed · 19 mi from Alexandria

Hey there, I’m Curly! I’m a handsome 1-year-old brindle Great Dane weighing right around 80 pounds. Back in early October, a hunter found my brother and me out in the woods when we were very thin and dehydrated. Thankfully, we’ve been on a good feeding schedule ever since and have already put on 10 to 15 pounds! Everyone here says I am a total sweetheart. I'm super gentle with people, take treats nicely from your hand, and walk really well on a leash! I’m currently working on my housetraining, and since I love snacks so much, I'm a big fan of training time. I also get along great with other dogs! Even though I'm a big boy who likes to get vocal and chatty while playing, I'm actually very gentle with my dog friends.

I am all set on my vet care, too! I’m neutered, microchipped, caught up on all my vaccines, and tested negative for heartworm and tick diseases. I would love nothing more than a cozy home and a family to call my own. Come say hi to me soon!

4. Larry
Adult · Male · Great Dane / Mixed · 19 mi from Alexandria

My name is Larry, and I’m a 1-year-old tan Great Dane weighing around 75 pounds! Earlier this month, a kind hunter found my brother and me out in the woods when we were severely underweight and dehydrated. Since then, we’ve been on a steady feeding schedule and have already gained a healthy 10 to 15 pounds! Even after a rough start, I am the sweetest, most gentle big guy. I walk nicely on a leash, take treats very softly from your hand, and love playing with other dogs! I can get pretty vocal when I play, and I also like to do some goofy mouth play, though I’m always gentle and never put any pressure down.

Because I don’t quite realize how big I am yet, I’m currently learning not to jump up when I get excited, and I'm also working on my housetraining (luckily, I'm super treat-motivated!). One funny thing to know about me is that when my brother and I were put in separate outdoor runs after getting neutered, I got bored and showed everyone I can climb a fence! I’m neutered, microchipped, up to date on my shots. I’m so ready to trade my days in the woods for a soft bed and a loving family. Come meet me soon!

8. Lucky
Adult · Female · Boxer / Mixed (short coat) · 3 mi from Alexandria

Meet Lucky!
This super sweet Boxer mix girl lost her home after her owner passed away and extended family members were unable to take her in. Once a beloved indoor family dog, Lucky found herself abandoned in an overcrowded shelter in York County, SC. With the shelter overwhelmed by multiple large hoarding and neglect cases, they reached out for help. Fortunately, we had a foster home ready, and Lucky is now safe with Worthy Dog Rescue.
Read more about Lucky
Lucky is everything you could want in a companion: sweet, affectionate, easygoing, and happiest when she’s with her people. Her foster describes her as an absolute dream. She’s house-trained, well-mannered, walks nicely on a leash without pulling, rides calmly in the car, and is comfortable staying in her own space when her person leaves. She learns quickly, comes when called, and sits politely for treats without jumping or grabbing.
This girl is a world-class snuggler! She loves sleeping under the covers with her head on your shoulder, giving kisses, leaning into your hands for affection, and rolling over for belly rubs. She’ll happily follow you from room to room just to be near you. When she’s not cuddling, she enjoys walks, chasing balls and squeaky toys, and spending time with her dog buddies. She has a playful side but settles down nicely and is content to relax by your side.
Lucky is currently living with another dog and gets along well with canine companions. She’s curious and appropriate when meeting new dogs, and her easygoing nature could make her a wonderful addition to a home with another friendly dog. She could also thrive as your one and only, soaking up all the love. Her history with cats is unknown, and while she hasn’t been formally tested with children, we believe she could do well with kind, respectful kids.
After losing the family she knew, Lucky deserves a home where she’ll feel safe, loved, and included. If you’re looking for a gentle, affectionate best friend who will happily share your couch, your bed, and pretty much your entire day, Lucky may be your girl!

10. Demi
Adult · Female · German Shepherd Dog / Mixed · 19 mi from Alexandria

Hi, I’m Demi! I’m a 3-year-old, 70-pound German Shepherd mix who just loves being right in the middle of things. I’m super friendly, great with kids, and an easy passenger in the car. I’ve even gone out to busy adoption events and did great with all the new people and activity! I am very food-motivated, so if you have treats in your hand, you have my full attention. That makes teaching me new things pretty easy! As far as other pets go, I’m not a fan of cats, and I don't like dogs that play super rough or get in my face. I’d be happiest in a cat-free home where I can be your one-and-only, or live alongside a calm, polite dog who respects my space. I’m spayed, microchipped, and fully caught up on my vaccines. If you’re looking for a sweet, social shepherd to take on drives and spoil with treats, come say hi!

Estimated Weight (puppies' weights change quickly!): 6 lbs as of October 21, 2026
Gets Along With: Most puppies are in the prime of their socialization window and will do well with other dogs, cats and kids so long as they receive patience and proper training.
Currently Living at: Shelter - these pups need a DC-area foster home or an adopter to make their way out of the shelter.
Read more about Moo
Special Adoption Considerations: Puppies under 6 months of age need to have multiple potty breaks/exercise throughout the day. Potential adopters with a standard 8-hour workday must be willing to make arrangements to meet the needs of their puppy.
Moo is Looking For: Hiya! Me and my littermates have loved our time in the puppy pile and with our mom Maple, but we are each ready to pack our bags and find our very own forever home! I'm looking for a home that will let me play with toys and get my puppy zoomies out and give me snuggles in between playtimes. When I'm a little older, I can't wait to explore my new neighborhood on lots of walks, and I'd really like to make a bunch of doggie friends along the way. Oh, and I should probably take a puppy obedience class or two so I can show you how smart I am. What do you say? Do you have room in your heart for me?
What My Foster Says About Me: Coming soon!
Puppy Vetting Requirements: Lucky Puppies have had their age appropriate vaccines, but may not yet be “fully” vaccinated. It is the adopter’s responsibility to ensure that the remaining puppy vaccines are given at the appropriate time. Please also keep in mind that, until your puppy is fully vaccinated, they are at greater risk for illness than an adult dog.
Due to this puppy’s young age, she/he has not yet been spayed or neutered. As part of the adoption contract, it will be your responsibility, as the adopter, to ensure that this is done no later than March 8, 2027. There are NO EXCEPTIONS and NO EXTENSIONS to this date. A non-refundable spay/neuter deposit will be collected if you would like Lucky Dog to pay for this animal to be spayed/neutered at one of our low cost partner vets.
Your new puppy will need to work on their house training and will also need to go to obedience school so they can grow into a well-socialized dog! TO ADOPT: The adoption fee for this puppy is $485, which includes the cost of routine vetting and transport from the shelter. If you are interested in adopting, please complete the Adoption Questionnaire online bit.ly/adoptaluckydog

Currently Living at: Shelter - Sampson needs a foster or adopter to make his way to the DC area
Special adoption considerations: Sampson is a truly Lucky Dog. He tested positive for heartworms, but landed in a place where heartworm treatment is provided! Just email the adoption coordinator - the address is at lower left!

Heartworm dogs can resume full active and normal lives, but need to be kept calm for 4-6 weeks after treatment. We are happy to discuss where in the treatment process this Lucky Dog is in right now! Just email the adoption coordinator - the address is at lower left!

28. Blue
Adult · Male · Collie (long coat) · 11 mi from Alexandria

Meet Blue!
Blue is a handsome, happy-go-lucky young man who is almost three years old and ready to find his perfect home! Recently neutered, this big boy is full of energy, affection, and personality. He needs to gain a little weight, but once he fills out, he’ll be an impressive 75+ pounds of Collie charm!
Blue loves people, enjoys children, and gets along well with other dogs. He’s an enthusiastic guy who is still learning his manners, so he’ll need a family willing to continue his training and help him become the best boy he can be. He can be a little mouthy during play and sometimes gets carried away with excited grabbing, but he has plenty of love to give!
Blue has a strong prey drive and gets very excited when he spots squirrels, so a home with appropriate supervision around small animals is important.
This fun-loving boy is discovering the joys of being a dog! Toys seem to be a relatively new adventure, and Blue loves them all.

Pig ears are another favorite when he’s in the mood for a good chew. He’s made wonderful progress with leash walking and isn’t bothered by cars, bikes, or motorcycles. People, however, are VERY exciting! Blue loves seeing everyone and may announce his enthusiasm with an enthusiastic bark.
Despite his exuberance on walks, Blue is calm and friendly when visiting public places and has enjoyed several successful outings to local businesses. He also rides well in the car, although he needs to be safely restrained because he’d much rather climb up front to be closer to his foster mom! He’s crate-trained, but he’s also well-behaved in the house and is trusted to sleep and stay home without being crated.
Blue is a big, lovable bundle of potential! He’ll thrive with a family ready to provide consistent training, appropriate outlets for his energy, and plenty of opportunities to explore the world with his people. In return, you’ll get a friendly, playful companion who brings a whole lot of joy wherever he goes.
Could Blue be the big-hearted boy you’ve been waiting for?

Adopting a large dog in Alexandria
Large dogs need room to stretch out and plenty of exercise: at least one good walk a day, and a secure yard is a bonus. Check your lease too, as some landlords limit the size or breed of dog.
Start training from day one. A big dog who walks nicely on a leash and doesn't jump up is a pleasure to live with, and many rescues can recommend a local trainer.
