4. Jake

Adult · Male · Terrier / Mixed (medium coat) · 18 mi from Centreville

Meet Jake!

This scruffy, happy-go-lucky terrier has quite an incredible story and shows just how resilient dogs can be. Jake lived outdoors in a dirty pen with little shelter for much of his life when a Good Samaritan stepped up to help. With an ice storm approaching, they continued advocating for him until they secured his freedom. Today, Jake is safe, warm, and ready for his next chapter because of them.

Read more about Jake

Jake is a social, confident, people-loving guy who greets the world with enthusiasm. His owner describes him as “jaunty,” and it’s easy to see why. He loves being part of whatever his people are doing, whether that’s yard work, hanging out while you work, going for walks, or heading out on an adventure. He enjoys playing fetch, chewing on one of many favorite toys, and pretending he’s a lap dog.

Jake loves other dogs! He does well as part of a pack, and we really want a playful canine companion in the home for him. If he’s an only dog, a fenced yard to play fetch and doggy playdates would also be a great outlet for him.

This handsome boy is crate-trained, house-trained, walks well on leash, and rides nicely in the car. He’s a budding senior but still an active guy who typically gets two walks a day and needs regular activity and engagement. The good news is that he can settle down with a chew or toy when it’s time to relax.

Jake loves to snuggle. He’ll hop onto the couch beside you, rest his head on your shoulder, and lean in for a hug. He’s a well-mannered guy who sits for treats and doesn’t beg for food. He has a healthy appetite and isn’t picky, although his diet is managed due to a possible food allergy.

Jake is a fun, affectionate companion with plenty of life and love to share. He’s ready for a family that appreciates his cheerful, outgoing personality and will give him the activity, companionship, and structure he needs.

6. Lucky

Adult · Female · Boxer / Mixed (short coat) · 18 mi from Centreville

Meet Lucky!

This super sweet Boxer mix girl lost her home after her owner passed away and extended family members were unable to take her in. Once a beloved indoor family dog, Lucky found herself abandoned in an overcrowded shelter in York County, SC. With the shelter overwhelmed by multiple large hoarding and neglect cases, they reached out for help. Fortunately, we had a foster home ready, and Lucky is now safe with Worthy Dog Rescue.

Read more about Lucky

Lucky is everything you could want in a companion: sweet, affectionate, easygoing, and happiest when she’s with her people. Her foster describes her as an absolute dream. She’s house-trained, well-mannered, walks nicely on a leash without pulling, rides calmly in the car, and is comfortable staying in her own space when her person leaves. She learns quickly, comes when called, and sits politely for treats without jumping or grabbing.

This girl is a world-class snuggler! She loves sleeping under the covers with her head on your shoulder, giving kisses, leaning into your hands for affection, and rolling over for belly rubs. She’ll happily follow you from room to room just to be near you. When she’s not cuddling, she enjoys walks, chasing balls and squeaky toys, and spending time with her dog buddies. She has a playful side but settles down nicely and is content to relax by your side.

Lucky is currently living with another dog and gets along well with canine companions. She’s curious and appropriate when meeting new dogs, and her easygoing nature could make her a wonderful addition to a home with another friendly dog. She could also thrive as your one and only, soaking up all the love. Her history with cats is unknown, and while she hasn’t been formally tested with children, we believe she could do well with kind, respectful kids.

After losing the family she knew, Lucky deserves a home where she’ll feel safe, loved, and included. If you’re looking for a gentle, affectionate best friend who will happily share your couch, your bed, and pretty much your entire day, Lucky may be your girl!

7. Gunner

Adult · Male · Beagle / German Shorthaired Pointer / Mixed (short coat) · 18 mi from Centreville

Meet Gunner!

Gunner is a handsome two-year-old boy with striking amber eyes and a fun, goofy personality! He came to us as an owner surrender after his previous adopters, an elderly couple in their 80s, found his energy level more than they could manage.

Read more about Gunner

We think Gunner may be a Beagle/German Shorthaired Pointer mix, and he’s just a great all-around dog. He is currently being fostered by Johanna and living with her four dogs and 2 cats. He enjoys being part of a pack
and loves to play with other dogs. In fact, having a playful canine companion is at the top of his wish list! But when playtime is over, he’s happy to relax on the couch, chew on his toys, or snuggle under the covers.

Gunner has great house manners. He’s completely housebroken, crate trained, and quiet in his crate. He knows sit and down, takes correction well, and is learning to keep all four paws on the ground when greeting people. He’s also respectful of cats and comfortable out and about. He even did great on a recent brewery outing!

Confident, social, and easygoing, Gunner is the kind of dog who fits right into the routine. He enjoys being around people and other animals but doesn’t need to be the center of attention. He does pull a bit on the leash, but his foster mom finds him easy to walk overall, and he’ll improve with practice. Walks are likely new for him.

Gunner’s ideal home would have another playful dog to be his buddy. He can occasionally bark at wildlife or sounds, so a home where that won’t be an issue would be best.

If you’re looking for a fun, well-mannered companion who gets along with dogs and cats and knows how to settle in at home, Gunner could be your guy!

Gunner will be coming to the DC metro area on 11/7.

13. Alice Adopt or Foster

Female · American Foxhound (short coat) · 8 mi from Centreville

COMING SOON

Ever wish you could have that perfect hound? Alice is the one for you. She is also affectionately known as
Moaning Myrtle. She has very pronounced and hilarious sighs and moans (not a barker though). Maybe it's someone blocking her sunshine?? Never has there been a more sun loving pup - she loves to spend time in her fosters quiet backyard contemplating nature. Snuggle time is on her favorites list unless her own bed is calling her for a nap. A crate is also an ok choice for her as long as treats are included.

Read more about Alice Adopt or Foster

Now, she is a hound so the scent of something in the woods could get you an extra 10 minutes before moving on.
And loud noises like thunder and fireworks require extra close snuggle time.
Currently she is attending college with foster mom, unofficially the rowing teams mascot. What's better than a teachers pet, lol.
As a young adult, we think about 3-5 years, canine companions are still so much fun for Alice. She engages them in play at their level. Her zoomies are too cute, she is so awkward with those long legs.
Currently she is in foster in NC but hope to see her in Virginia soon.

14. Winnie Adopt or Foster

Female · Hound / Mixed (short coat) · 8 mi from Centreville

*FOSTER NEEDED**Oh baby, let's talk Winnie!
Winnie is an 11 week old hound baby that survived being found on the streets at 4-5 weeks old and only 2.2 pounds. She is now a whopping 13 lbs with cute floppy ears and big clumsy feet. And an even cuter little houndy baarrroo!
Great at tug of war and a top wrestler, she keeps up with her foster family in every way.
Jumping and running and playing in the yard are in development. Morning "sniffari" walks in the backyard with foster mom are so much fun.
Speaking of walking, harness manners are coming along nicely! She’d be a great companion at a dog friendly brew pub where she can greet new friends, canine and human- she loves them all!
Winnie would love a playful canine sibling and humans that are active and ready to keep her little brain challenged. She has been the ultimate welcome wagon in her foster home.
Crate trained, sleeps through the night and almost potty trained.
Her new family should be prepared for all that a young puppy needs including a schedule that allows for many potty breaks through the day! Our best guess at a full grown weight is around 50lbs- most of that in her already long legs!

Male · Dachshund / Mixed (short coat) · 8 mi from Centreville

Let's talk Harvey and yes- he really is only 22 lbs!

For such a young pup (estimated at about a year old), Harvey is a true romantic. He enjoys long walks, watching rom coms and being serenaded by his human (he’s told us low, crooning love songs are his personal fave!) He is good with kids, friendly with people and loves to play with other dogs. He is however, decidedly not a fan of the rain and likes a warm sweater when it is cold - can you blame him?

Harvey is looking for a family that loves to play and loves having a lowrider under their feet. Expect the pitter patter of little feet wherever you go. He would also love to be allowed in bed with you, as his love language is physical touch so expect a good snuggle.

16. Willie Adopt or Foster+

Male · Unknown breed (short coat) · 8 mi from Centreville

That adorable underbite belongs to the sweetest boy Willie.
At just 8 lbs and approximately 3 years old, he was found wandering the streets of NC, underweight with a gash on his head.
He was scared and exhausted but wanted nothing more than to find a warm lap, snuggles and kind words.
Fellow pups can scare him at first but with a good intro and reassurance he becomes one of the pack.
He is smart and makes quick work of gates and obstacles - perhaps he’s part cat! He really just wants to be close to his humans. However, settling in to his crate at night comes without any fuss. I'm sure if you said he could sleep with you, his heart would be happy.
So far, he is housetrained and does ask to go out.
If you are looking for that little buddy that needs some TLC in return for so much love Willie is your boy.

17. Mickey Adopt or Foster

Male · Basset Hound / Poodle (Standard) / Mixed (medium coat) · 8 mi from Centreville

Nothing is better than seeing Mickey smile! This one year old guy had a rough start in life, living with 14 other dogs in 2 rooms of a very dark house.
Getting out came with a big sigh and with some help from his foster sibling, the smiles started. Mickey has been calm and mellow so far and seems to get along with everyone and calm canine friends bring him comfort.
With gentle interactions and tasty treats, humans are also quickly becoming his friends.
The outside world is still new and scary and watching life from the window and a couch is currently his speed. With patience and time, we’re sure he’ll become the brave boy we know is in there. With a crate as his safe space he’s well on his way to being both crate and potty trained. Most new experiences for Mickey take him a minute to figure out but once he does, it's all good and he never looks back!

Rebel is new to Mutts but what we’ve seen so far, he’s a great catch! A solid adult (estimated 6-8’ish) he’s past the young crazy stage and still has lots of pep in his step. In fact this boy LOVES a good sniffy walk to put that Beagle nose to good use. He’s a larger Beagle mix, probably with some hound or basset and has all the best traits of a good ole hound dog! He’s friendly with people and so far has been happy to meet other dogs but hasn’t been overly interested in playing (that could change with time and the right playmate!).

Meet Blue!
Blue is a handsome, happy-go-lucky young man who is almost three years old and ready to find his perfect home! Recently neutered, this big boy is full of energy, affection, and personality. He needs to gain a little weight, but once he fills out, he’ll be an impressive 75+ pounds of Collie charm!
Blue loves people, enjoys children, and gets along well with other dogs. He’s an enthusiastic guy who is still learning his manners, so he’ll need a family willing to continue his training and help him become the best boy he can be. He can be a little mouthy during play and sometimes gets carried away with excited grabbing, but he has plenty of love to give!
Blue has a strong prey drive and gets very excited when he spots squirrels, so a home with appropriate supervision around small animals is important.
This fun-loving boy is discovering the joys of being a dog! Toys seem to be a relatively new adventure, and Blue loves them all.

Pig ears are another favorite when he’s in the mood for a good chew. He’s made wonderful progress with leash walking and isn’t bothered by cars, bikes, or motorcycles. People, however, are VERY exciting! Blue loves seeing everyone and may announce his enthusiasm with an enthusiastic bark.
Despite his exuberance on walks, Blue is calm and friendly when visiting public places and has enjoyed several successful outings to local businesses. He also rides well in the car, although he needs to be safely restrained because he’d much rather climb up front to be closer to his foster mom! He’s crate-trained, but he’s also well-behaved in the house and is trusted to sleep and stay home without being crated.
Blue is a big, lovable bundle of potential! He’ll thrive with a family ready to provide consistent training, appropriate outlets for his energy, and plenty of opportunities to explore the world with his people. In return, you’ll get a friendly, playful companion who brings a whole lot of joy wherever he goes.

She’s crushing potty training, taking crate time in stride, and learning her basic commands faster than most humans learn to use a coffee machine. When she’s not dazzling you with her smarts, Hannah is all about playtime—zooming around with her toys, inventing new games, and occasionally trying to “help” with chores (spoiler: she’s not actually helpful, but she’s ridiculously cute while trying).

Her affectionate side is just as strong. Hannah loves snuggles, belly rubs, and will happily curl up in your lap like she’s still a tiny bean—even when she’s not. She’s the kind of pup who will make you laugh daily, melt your heart hourly, and remind you that life is better with a wagging tail. Hannah is ready to bring joy, laughter, and maybe a little mischief to her forever home. If you’re ready for puppy kisses, playful antics, and a lifelong best friend, Hannah is ready for you.

Puppy (1 month 28 days) · Female · Labrador Retriever / Mixed · 8 mi from Centreville

Meet Sidney – The Tiny CEO of Cuteness Sidney may only be a pup, but don’t let her size fool you—this Labrador Retriever mix is already running the household like a seasoned pro. She’s smart, affectionate, playful, and has a knack for making you drop whatever you’re doing just to admire her puppy antics. Sidney is crushing it at potty training (seriously, she deserves a gold star), and she’s a champ in her crate—though she’ll happily remind you that snuggles are way better than naps alone. She’s already learning her basic commands, and when you talk to her, she listens like she’s taking notes for a future exam.

She’s curious about everything you do—whether it’s cooking dinner, folding laundry, or scrolling on your phone. And yes, she’s a little too fascinated by cats… think “tiny detective” meets “overenthusiastic fan club.” With some gentle coaching, she’ll learn that feline friends prefer admiration from a respectful distance. Her days are filled with zoomies at random hours, perfecting her head tilt for maximum charm, sneaking in kisses when you least expect it, and supervising all human activities because quality control is important. If you’re looking for a pup who will keep you laughing, melt your heart daily, and grow into a loyal best friend, Sidney is ready to sign the adoption papers—paw print included.

28. Scream Pup Tatum

Puppy (1 month 28 days) · Female · Labrador Retriever / Mixed · 8 mi from Centreville

Meet Tatum – The Tiny Tornado of Love & Laughter! Just a pup, Tatum is a Labrador Retriever mix who’s already proving she’s equal parts genius, cuddle bug, and comedian. She’s the kind of puppy who will melt your heart, make you laugh until your cheeks hurt, and somehow convince you that yes, she deserves “just one more treat.” Tatum is way ahead of the puppy curve — she’s doing fantastic with potty training, happily hangs out in her crate, and is already learning her basic commands. But don’t let her smarts fool you… she’s also a master of mischief. Her signature move? The head tilt — perfectly timed to make you forget whatever you were saying and hand over a snack.

She loves other dogs, enjoys plotting stealth missions to sneak up on the cats (spoiler: the cats always know), and recently discovered that tails are fascinating. Not just her own, but her siblings’ too — which means occasional tail-chasing marathons that end in adorable puppy pile-ups. And then there’s the carpet slide. Picture this: Tatum zooms across the room, hits the carpet, and slides like she’s auditioning for a puppy version of Top Gun. She pops up, wide-eyed, as if to say, “Did you see that? I’m amazing!” Tatum is affectionate, playful, and full of personality. She’s the kind of dog who will grow into a loyal, loving companion — but right now, she’s also a pint-sized entertainer who will keep you smiling every single day. If you’re ready for a puppy who’s equal parts heart and hilarity, Tatum is ready to make your home her forever home.

29. Scream Pup Mindy

Puppy (1 month 28 days) · Female · Labrador Retriever / Mixed · 8 mi from Centreville

Meet Mindy – The Tiny Queen of Peek-a-Boo! Mindy is a Labrador Retriever mix who’s equal parts adorable, clever, and just a little shy… but don’t let that fool you. This pint-sized pup is secretly plotting to steal your heart (and maybe your socks). At first, Mindy might give you the “I’m not sure about you yet” look, but the moment she decides you’re safe, she’ll unleash her playful side—especially if her siblings are around. With them, she’s all in: chasing tails, wrestling, and joining every puppy prank like she’s been planning it all along. She’s already showing off her smarts—potty training is going great, she’s a crate champ, and she’s learning basic commands faster than you can say “sit.” Honestly, she might be smarter than some humans we know (but we won’t name names).

Mindy’s perfect home will be one that understands her gentle, cautious nature and gives her time to warm up. Once she does, you’ll have a loyal, affectionate sidekick who will follow you everywhere… except maybe the bathroom (she’s still deciding if that’s her business). If you’re ready for a puppy who’s sweet, silly, and secretly a comedic genius, Mindy’s your girl. She’s small now, but her love—and her mischief—are growing every day.

30. Scream Pup Jessica

Puppy (1 month 28 days) · Female · Labrador Retriever / Mixed · 8 mi from Centreville

Meet Jessica – The Tiny Tornado with a Heart of Gold. Just a pup, Jessica is already proving she’s not your average Labrador Retriever mix — she’s smart, affectionate, and has enough playful energy to power a small city. Potty training? She’s doing really well (but hey, she’s still a baby, so a few “oops” moments are part of the package). Crate training? She’s getting the hang of it, though she might tell you she’d rather be out running laps around the living room. Jessica doesn’t walk anywhere — why walk when you can run like you’re chasing the world’s fastest tennis ball? She’s a blur of wagging tail and floppy ears, zooming from one adventure to the next.

And when she’s not sprinting, she’s throwing her paws at you like she’s trying to high-five her way into your heart. She’s got a soft spot for cats — she’ll sit and watch them like they’re the most fascinating TV show ever. But don’t be fooled… she’s definitely plotting a polite “hello” when the time is right. Jessica is a natural leader, showing other pups how to be brave, curious, and downright adorable. She’s affectionate, playful, and always ready to turn your day into a comedy show starring her. If you’re looking for a puppy who will keep you laughing, keep you moving, and keep your heart full, Jessica is ready to run straight into your life — and probably into your living room at full speed.

Adopting a dog in Centreville

Most rescues ask you to fill in an application, meet the dog, and pay an adoption fee that usually covers spaying or neutering, vaccinations and a microchip. Many are foster-based, so you'll often meet your dog in a volunteer's home rather than a shelter.

Senior dogs are often the calmest companions and the slowest to find homes. If you'd like a settled, affectionate dog, ask the rescues about their older residents.

Puppies go quickly, so if you've fallen for one, contact the rescue soon. Ask how big they're expected to grow, and plan for plenty of house-training and training in the first few months.
