3. Calvin

Senior (9 years 2 months) · Male · Labrador Retriever / Mixed (medium coat) · 21 mi from Encinitas

Forever home wanted, meet handsome, adorable and loving Calvin! Oh, to be a black dog in the shelter means being overlooked, add to that a senior too then you're destined to definitely overstay your welcome! He was originally brought into the shelter on August 10th as a stray and adopted on August 18th. Luckily for Calvin, he was at one of the rural shelters where dogs get some extra time. Calvin was also a volunteer and staff favorite, so he got lots and lots of loving.

Read more about Calvin

Due to housing issues, Calvin was surrendered to the shelter by his owner back on September 12th. The owner was kind enough to leave very helpful information about Calvin that helps us with placement. Calvin is good with all people. He lived with teenagers, small children and babies. He lived with both male and female dogs and cats! Sadly, he mostly lived outside and can be easily scared with loud noises like fireworks and thunder. Calvin seems to walk well on the leash and rides nicely in the car.

Calvin had a tumor like growth on his face that the shelter had removed. They believe it was a lipoma and has recovered nicely. We were able to get Calvin out of the shelter when it was getting close to his time to run out because a foster stepped up for him. He is being fostered with other dogs, so we'll get to know more about him. He just arrived to us on October 22nd, so as we learn more, we'll update his bio.

If you are interested in meeting Calvin, please fill out and application at labradrorsandfriends.org. Calvin is located in Southern California.

6. Canela

Puppy (3 months 4 days) · Female · Labrador Retriever / Mixed (medium coat) · 21 mi from Encinitas

Meet Canela!

Canela found herself at the San Jacinto shelter. You might think a cute puppy would be adopted quickly, but Canela has a bony lump on her head that the vet believes may be a birth defect. Two of her siblings, who were adopted separately, also had smaller lumps on their heads.

Despite being just a puppy, Canela was red-listed and at risk. Thankfully, a foster stepped up, and we were able to get this sweet girl to safety!

Read more about Canela

Canela is a scared little girl who is still learning that the world isn’t such a scary place. Loud noises and fast movements frighten her, so she’ll need a patient family willing to help her socialize, build confidence, and learn to trust.

She’s currently fostered with three large dogs and is doing well with them! She loves playing outside with her canine foster siblings and follows her foster mom around the yard. When she’s not outside enjoying some playtime, you’ll find her searching for a cozy spot inside the house to curl up and relax.

Her foster siblings are also helping show her that receiving love and affection from her foster mom is a wonderful thing!

We believe Canela would do best in a home with another confident dog who can help continue to show her that the world isn’t so scary.

Canela needs someone willing to give her the time, patience, and encouragement she needs to blossom. Could that be you?

If you’re interested in giving Canela the loving home she deserves, please submit an adoption application at www.labradorsandfriends.org.

Canela is located in Southern California.

7. Robby

Adult (3 years 6 months) · Male · Golden Retriever / Great Pyrenees / Mixed (long coat) · 18 mi from Encinitas

Looking to adopt a 'special' case? Thank goodness!Robby (fka Robin) came to us from Ensenada (baja) the first week of October and is currently staying at casa de ARWOB and living among several other adoptable rescue dogs and cats. Robby is a huge baja mutt which means he looks like a Golden, oversized Spaniel and some say Pyr. The likelyhood of a Pyr runnign the streets is minimal but we have not done (and will not be doing) a DNA test so these breeds are just from aesthetics and a bit on personality. Robby was rescued by someone who lives in Ensenada, Mexico back in february. He was skin and bones, was unable to move during a rainy day as he was under an embackment it took a bit to secure him as he was very weak and getting down to him and up was an ordeal for the good sams but they knew this dog needed help and were not going to leave without him.

Read more about Robby

Euthanasia or saving it did not matter, he needed help. Once secured took him to a vet who weigh him at only 20kgs (very thin and almost no muscle mass) the rescuers kept him and helped him recover. Fast fwd months they seeked help to adopt him out or move him to a group with no luck. An ARWOB rescue partner heard of his plea and helped get him going ei neuter etc in september and then he came to San Diego where he landed at casa de ARWOB. What we realized is this pup is VERY heavy. Not sure if its lack of excercise where he was or too much "love" and over conpensated for his lack of nutrition before. When Robin (now called Robby) arrived san diego he was 69 pounds. As of late October he is now 65 pounds. Measured meals and just running/walking mostly around the yard with fellow arwob dog friends is really getting him down and we have noticed a significant improvemnt on his movement. At first we did not know if he was an older dog or perhaps just obese. We can say this guy can walk and use stairs no problem, he will play around the yard with his dog friends and LOVES to be part of a pack of humans or dogs. However, we believe he likely has an old injury (ies) either his hips, hind legs or knees. We are debating taking xrays as whatever it is it will NOT be fixable. The people who helped this dog likely never noticed maybe back then at a thin size and recovering he moved more and now that he is a big boy and is slowly loosing weight perhaps we will see an increase in his activity BUT for now, we do NOT see this guy as somone who can go on miles a day on a walk. MAYBE one mile or just whatever amount of walk/movement he wants in the yard interacting with dogs but if you are looking for long distance or high intensity movement partner this guy is not going to be it. Ideally an easy going home who wants an easy going companion would be the best for him. IF we do xrays likely will be done early November so we can have more info for potential adopters should this movement be a factor for someone to choose him. Robby is a silly goofy, easy going, gentle dog who is a really good dog and human companion. He has zero issues with dogs. He is not a socialitite with people and its a slow warming up but from the interactions we have seen within a few minutes of walking or saying hi he warms up to humans, just do not expect waggy tail approaching for pets from him when he first meets you...once you are his human either foster or adopter then YES he is all waggy tails and lovely boy who seeks human attention without an iota of separation anxiety. He is doing great on potty and crate training. In ensenada he was in a home with cats, we don't know how 'good' he was with them. At casa de ARWOB he does not interact with cats on his own. We think a cat who holds its ground and is NOT a scary cat ei runs from him will be fine. He seems safe BUT he can also really observe him so we can't say completely if he is going to be well paired with cats. If anyone interested in him has cats, we are happy to expose him more and observe him more with cats to see if he is chill or not. It will also be very cat pers

9. Cr

Young (3 months 14 days) · Male · Labrador Retriever / Mixed (medium coat) · 21 mi from Encinitas

Forever home wanted, meet Finn!! Finn and his four siblings are lucky puppies! There were a total of 6 that entered the shelter on 10/10 as owner surrenders. Normally when we see gorgeous puppies like this come into the shelter we tend to look away. We just assume the demand would be so great, they'd be adopted by members of the public. A volunteer happened to take a peek at them on the county website 4 days after they arrived. Their status changed from the morning to the late afternoon, so she inquired. Overnight, things changed dramatically. One of their siblings passed away and a test showed he was positive for parvo.

Read more about Cr

The shelter removed them from the website and sent out a 24 hour notice for a rescue to take them by 5 PM on 10/14 or they would be euthanized for being exposed to Parvo. We had them tested and they were all negative for the virus! We still opted to give them antibodies as a precaution.

Finn and his siblings developed an upper respiratory infection shortly after arriving at the fosters, but they were treated and all resolved! Finn was a little slower at fully recovering so we put him on a different antibiotic for 10 days to clear it out.

Two of Finn's siblings have already found homes and the rest are all thriving, With everything they've experienced in their young lives, they are such resilient, happy and playful puppies! Their foster mom says they are some of the best puppies she's ever cared for. They are just about potty trained and nailing pee pad training! They sleep through the night like little angels and are patient when their foster mom goes in their room in the morning to let them outside and to fix their breakfast! To think they were hours away from losing their lives is mind boggling!

This litter will be larger dogs so know that going in. At their age of roughly 3.5 months, they weigh upwards of 25+ pounds.

If you are interested in meeting Finn or any of his siblings, please head over to labradorsandfriends.org to fill out an application. Finn and his siblings are located in Southern California.

12. Hercules

Young (1 year 1 month) · Male · Labrador Retriever / Mixed (medium coat) · 21 mi from Encinitas

Foster or forever home wanted, meet Hercules!!

If dogs could talk, we're sure Hercules would have a story to tell. Luckily for him, a lady was out late at night on October 4th doing her daily ritual of TNR (trap and release) of cats in Los Angeles. She happened upon Hercules tied to a fence on such a short lead, he was unable to move or sit down. Being an animal loving person, she reached out to friends who happen to be involved in dog rescue, and they reached out to us to see if we could take him on and try to find him a forever home.

Read more about Hercules

As soon as we saw this handsome boy and heard his story, we put a plan in place to bring him to safety. Hercules was neutered, microchipped and vaccinated prior to heading to boarding. This young man is estimated to be a little over a year old and very friendly with everyone he meets.

Being in boarding doesn't give us a lot of insight into a dog's temperament or training so we are still getting to know him. All the people that have handled him to date state he is very sweet and dog friendly.

If you are interested in meeting Hercules, please head over to labradorsandfriends.org to fill out an application. Hercules is located in Southern California.

16. Monster's Inc Pup

Puppy · Male · Great Pyrenees / Mixed · 11 mi from Encinitas

There is nothing scary about the Monster's Inc puppies; like Mike and Sulley, these puppies will have you grinning ear to ear. They are thriving in their foster home where they were bottle fed from a young age. Sadly, their mother, a purebred Great Pyrenees, was killed by coyotes before she and her puppies could be rescued. We don't know who their dad was, but these puppies are currently on track to be large to extra large when they are done growing. These stunning puppies have been hand raised and are very social and loving. They have been around dogs, cats and kids in their current foster home.

28. Calvin

Adult (2 years 11 months) · Male · American Staffordshire Terrier / Mixed (short coat) · 24 mi from Encinitas

❤️ CALVIN UPDATE ❤️

Our sweet Calvin had major surgery Tuesday, October 6th, and despite everything this boy has endured, his incredible spirit is shining through. ❤️

His injuries confirmed just how much he’s been through — a broken jaw, multiple bullet fragments in his face, and several damaged teeth that had to be removed.

He’s understandably been in quite a bit of pain today, but he’s still in great spirits and doing wonderfully in his foster home. He loves to eat, soak up all the pets, and just be close to his people.

Read more about Calvin

And if you need proof of what a special boy he is… he was wagging his tail straight out of surgery when he saw his foster mom. ❤️

Calvin has been through more than any dog should, but his personality is absolutely wonderful. He is so full of love and seems incredibly grateful to finally be safe, cared for, and surrounded by people who love him.

Keep sending this brave boy all the healing thoughts! ❤️

Check back to read more about me or email adoptions@itsthepits.org to speak to an adoptions team member. Thank you for adopting!

Brutus is dog-friendly and loves his treats, so he’s always happy to make new friends—especially if snacks are involved! He’s a funny, goofy guy with a sweet personality who will keep you smiling with his silly antics.

Because of his size, Brutus would do best with older kids who are comfortable around a very large, enthusiastic dog.

Puppy (3 months 21 days) · Female · Labrador Retriever / Staffordshire Bull Terrier / Mixed (short coat) · 18 mi from Encinitas

Meet Newt! Newt is an absolutely adorable 7-pound mixed-breed puppy born on July 9, 2026. We're not quite sure what breeds make up this little cutie, but we suspect she may have a little Labrador Retriever in her! Whatever her mix, one thing is certain—Newt is a bundle of joy with an irresistible personality and so much love to give!

This happy, curious little girl is full of life and loves exploring the world around her. Newt absolutely adores her people and is happiest when she's by their side. She'll happily follow you from room to room and comes running when called, always excited to be near her favorite humans!

Read more about Newt

Newt is a social butterfly who loves playing with her foster doggy brothers and sister. She gets along wonderfully with other dogs and enjoys a good puppy play session, but she's also perfectly content entertaining herself with toys and balls. She loves people of all ages and sizes, making her a wonderful potential addition to a loving family. She hasn't been introduced to cats yet, so we're not sure how she would do with feline friends.

Like any young puppy, Newt is still learning her manners. She can get a little mouthy during playtime, but she's already responding well to gentle redirection. She's also making fantastic progress with potty training! Her foster family takes her outside approximately every hour, and she's doing a great job learning to do her business outdoors. With consistency and patience, we're confident she'll continue to thrive. And here's some especially wonderful news for puppy adopters, Newt sleeps through the night in her crate! She also takes her daytime naps there and settles herself nicely, even if she occasionally protests with a little whining at first. She's doing well with short periods away from her people, especially when she's had plenty of playtime and exercise beforehand. Newt loves going for walks and is great on a leash. She is not reactive to other dogs at all!

Newt is the perfect combination of playful, affectionate, curious, and independent. She's looking for a forever family who will embrace all the fun and adventure that comes with raising a puppy while providing the love, structure, and training she needs to grow into an amazing lifelong companion. Newt is spayed and up to date on her vaccinations. Her adoption fee is $350. An additional $100 refundable training deposit is required at adoption. To encourage a strong foundation of good manners and responsible puppy parenting, training must be completed in a timely manner, and the deposit is refundable within three months of the adoption date upon meeting the training requirement. If you're ready for puppy kisses, playful adventures, and a lifetime of unconditional love, Newt might just be your perfect match!

Adopting a large dog in Encinitas

Large dogs need room to stretch out and plenty of exercise: at least one good walk a day, and a secure yard is a bonus. Check your lease too, as some landlords limit the size or breed of dog.

Start training from day one. A big dog who walks nicely on a leash and doesn't jump up is a pleasure to live with, and many rescues can recommend a local trainer.
