If you are interested in fostering please fill out an online application. Hi, I'm Colby, a charming and spirited German Shepherd X seeking my perfect match! Surrendered by my previous owner to Lancaster Shelter, I have already shown my love for people and children, having lived with kids aged 5 and 11. I am vocal and food-motivated dog, making me a delightful companion for those who appreciate a communicative and affectionate pup.

Read more about Colby

I'm crate trained, though I'm still working on house training, so a patient and understanding owner will be ideal. I have a high prey drive, so a home without smaller pets or livestock is essential. I'm reactive to other male dogs or strong-willed dogs but is accepting of submissive females of my own size. I need a quiet place with minimal distractions to thrive, as I can become easily stimulated and is a strong chewer who may try to explore beyond normal fencing. One of my favorite activities is splashing around in kiddie pools—it's my idea of heaven! However, I don't do well being left alone at home for long periods, as my investigative nature leads me to explore my surroundings. With the right environment and a loving family, I am sure to bring joy and laughter to your life. If you're ready to give unique and wonderful me the home I deserve, please put in an online application to meet me. *Thank you to Sharon for sponsoring this wonderful dog at the Burnice Kraemer Sanctuary and giving him the chance for a better life.

If you are interested in fostering please fill out an online application. Hi, I'm Homie, the ultimate canine companion with a heart of gold and an adventurous spirit! I am an affectionate, outgoing, and confident Husky / Australian Shepherd who is always up for a good time. My playful nature makes me a blast to be around, and my confidence means I'm always ready to tackle new adventures.

Read more about Homie

I'm house-trained and will politely scratch at the door and whimper if I need to go out. I know a bunch of cool tricks like sit, stay, lay down, jump, gentle, shake, and high five, and I walk beautifully on a leash. I am also a fetch fanatic and loves nothing more than a day at the beach or sunbathing in the yard. I'm an energetic guy who needs plenty of exercise and space to explore, so I'm not the best fit for indoor-only living. I am an escape artist if I find a hole or gap in the fence, so a secure yard is a must. I am a pro at socializing with other dogs, making me the perfect playmate for any doggy friends I meet, but not a fan of cats. I am great with older children but young children are an unknown as I haven't been around any. And while I'm a total softie most of the time, I do have a bit of a "no-no" attitude when it comes to nail trimming—so fair warning there! This might be something to consider with a professional groomer. I was surrendered by my previous owner but I'm ready to find my forever home with a family who can keep up with my active lifestyle and shower me with the love and attention I deserve. If you're looking for a fun-loving, adventurous, and affectionate pup to join your family, I am your guy! If you are interested in fostering please fill out an online application. Hi, I'm Ginness, a Labrador X who's ready for my second act! I'm reserved, independent, and an oh-so-sensitive gal who was recently let go by my ex-owner who moved to a small home with a strict "no dogs allowed" policy. Poor me had to live out my golden years in the backyard—how rude, right? But fear not! I may be a bit shy at first, but once I warm up, I'll show you my playful side.

9. Winnie

Adult · Female · Pit Bull Terrier (short coat) · 46 mi from Oxnard

Meet Winnie, a beautiful 3-year-old Pit Bull mix who has already come so far. ❤️
When we found Winnie at the shelter, she was absolutely terrified—shaking and curled up in the corner, unsure of the world around her. Sadly, that fear didn’t disappear the moment she was rescued. It translated into fearful behavior, and Winnie needed someone to help her understand that she was finally safe.
Winnie has just completed extensive professional training, and she is doing fantastic. She has made incredible strides, gained confidence, and continues to improve every day. We are so proud of how hard she has worked.
Now Winnie needs a very specific kind of home. She needs an experienced, Pit Bull-savvy owner who understands fearful dogs and can provide the structure, boundaries, love, and discipline she needs to continue succeeding.
We also want to be completely transparent: Winnie is not a dog you’re going to take to dog parks, crowded patios, or Starbucks. And that's okay. Not every dog needs that life to be happy. Winnie needs an owner who understands her limitations, advocates for her, keeps her safe, and gives her a calm, structured life where she can thrive.
In the right hands, Winnie is an incredibly special dog with so much love to give. We know her person is out there—someone who will see how far she has come and be willing to continue the work that has helped her become the dog she is today.
Winnie doesn't need a perfect world. She just needs the right person. ❤️

10. Cleopatra

Adult · Female · Shepherd / Mixed (medium coat) · 46 mi from Oxnard

Cleopatra's story is one of rescue, resilience, and second chances. She was rescued from the sewer as a tiny pup by our very own director, Lisa, and her siblings. At just 9 weeks old, she was adopted into a loving home where she spent the next six years as a cherished family member. When her owner recently passed away, she was surrendered to Rancho Cucamonga shelter. The shelter staff went above and beyond to track us down, and we were determined to bring her back where she belonged. It took effort, coordination, and transport to make it happen, but we knew she deserved a second chance. Now 6 years old, Cleopatra is a medium-large mixed breed with stunning blue and amber eyes and a gorgeous cream and tan coat.

Read more about Cleopatra

She carries the weight of her past gently—she's a bit shy at first and reserved when meeting new people. But with patience and kindness, she opens up beautifully. She's loving, affectionate, and genuinely enjoys human connection once she trusts you. We're still getting to know how she does with other dogs, but she's been an absolute joy to have around. After everything she's been through, Cleopatra deserves a home where she can finally settle in, feel safe, and be loved for exactly who she is. Apply to adopt Cleopatra today!

13. Potato

Young · Male · American Staffordshire Terrier / Mixed (short coat) · 46 mi from Oxnard

Hi! I’m Potato. I was rescued from the county pound just one day before I was scheduled to be executed. Back then, I was scared and completely shut down. I’m now living with my foster family, including two other dogs, a 13-year-old boy, and his mom. I love them all, but I dream of having a person or family to call my very own. I’m incredibly affectionate and naturally protective of the people I love. My trainer says I’m the best boy! I’m eager to please, listen well, and already know commands like sit, stay, heel, and come. I walk nicely on a leash with a gentle reminder, although I can get excited when I see other dogs and bounce around because I love to play.

People describe me as playful, sweet, cute (I won’t argue with that!), and affectionate. I absolutely love to cuddle. Every now and then I get the zoomies, but once I’m home, I’m happiest curling up for a nap—especially if it’s on your lap. My dream home is with someone who enjoys the outdoors, takes me on lots of walks and adventures, and will continue my training. I thrive when I have guidance and know I’m making my person proud. If you’re looking for a loyal, gorgeous, loving companion who’s ready to be your very best friend, you will find that in me!

I'm still getting acclimated to my new surroundings, having been rescued from a shelter where I ended up as a stray with my time there running out. Behind my initial defensive demeanor, I am a sweet and gentle soul, but right now I'm not always able to show it.

I am barrier reactive and can be nervous, but once you earn my trust and get me on a leash, you'll see my true colors shine. I'm making new friends with staff and volunteers, relishing my time in my play yard too. I know basic commands - 'sit', 'down' and 'shake', walk beautifully on a leash and take treats very gently. It's not known if I'll be best buds with other dogs, if I'd get along with cats or if I'd do ok in a home with children. Right now I need a patient and experienced adult to show me that the world isn't so scary, and that I can feel safe and loved. I had a challenging start, and I am searching for someone to take a chance on me. I need an understanding family who can provide structure, patience, and lots of love to help me overcome my fears and blossom into the loyal companion I was always meant to be. Could you be the one to unlock my heart and show me what it means to be loved? If you're willing to open your heart and guide me on my path to healing, you'll be rewarded with the devoted companionship of a dog who will forever be grateful for the second chance you gave me. If you think you're my special person, please fill out an online application to meet me. *Thank you to Sharon for sponsoring this wonderful dog at the Burnice Kraemer Sanctuary and giving him the chance for a better life.

Adopting a large dog in Oxnard

Large dogs need room to stretch out and plenty of exercise: at least one good walk a day, and a secure yard is a bonus. Check your lease too, as some landlords limit the size or breed of dog.

Start training from day one. A big dog who walks nicely on a leash and doesn't jump up is a pleasure to live with, and many rescues can recommend a local trainer.
