Meet Squid! Some dogs just have a way of stealing your heart, and Squid is definitely one of them!Squid was rescued in the 11th hour, just in time to escape euthanasia. After spending the last few months in foster care, this adorable boy is showing everyone just how much love he has to give. He’s goofy, playful, and absolutely thrives on attention. Toys are a favorite, and if there’s water around, even better! Squid would love an active family who enjoys including their four-legged companion in life’s adventures. He’s also a true Velcro dog. Once he loves you, he wants to be right by your side. Squid can be a bit of a Houdini when first settling into a new environment, so secure fencing and extra care with doors and gates are important until he understands that home is where the fun is.

9. Bruno

Adult (4 years 11 months) · Male · Dachshund / Mixed (short coat) · 45 mi from Oxnard

Meet Bruno

A sweet soul with a love for company and cozy blankets

Male • Standard Dachshund, mix • Approximately 5 years old • 24 pounds

With his warm brown eyes and affectionate nature, Bruno has a way of making you feel like the most important person in the room. He enjoys attention from adults and children alike, and when he’s especially happy to see you, he’ll stretch up against your legs to get a little closer.

Read more about Bruno

Bruno appreciates the simple pleasures: a leisurely walk, a tasty treat, a friendly game of chase, and a comfortable couch beside his people. In true dachshund fashion, he loves burrowing into pillows and blankets. If your idea of a lovely evening includes a cozy spot and a devoted companion, Bruno would be happy to join you.

He has been friendly and nonreactive with the dogs he’s met so far, both large and small. He plays appropriately with his foster sisters and enjoys their company. Found as a stray alongside another dog, Bruno also shared space with other dogs during his shelter stay.

Bruno walks beautifully on a leash, making outings together a pleasure. Toys haven’t caught his interest just yet; for now, people, treats, and his canine companions seem to be his favorite things.

He is still working on his indoor manners and currently marks in the home. His foster family is managing this with belly bands, and his adopter should be prepared to continue patient, consistent housetraining as he adjusts.

Bruno would love a family who will include him in everyday life, enjoy his affectionate personality, and give him the time and guidance he needs to settle in. Another friendly dog could be a lovely match, given how much he enjoys his foster sisters.

Could your home be Bruno’s next cozy place to land? Submit an adoption application through Dachshund Rescue of Los Angeles and tell us about the life you could share with this lovable boy.

If you are interested in fostering please fill out an online application. Hi, I'm Colby, a charming and spirited German Shepherd X seeking my perfect match! Surrendered by my previous owner to Lancaster Shelter, I have already shown my love for people and children, having lived with kids aged 5 and 11. I am vocal and food-motivated dog, making me a delightful companion for those who appreciate a communicative and affectionate pup.

Read more about Colby

I'm crate trained, though I'm still working on house training, so a patient and understanding owner will be ideal. I have a high prey drive, so a home without smaller pets or livestock is essential. I'm reactive to other male dogs or strong-willed dogs but is accepting of submissive females of my own size. I need a quiet place with minimal distractions to thrive, as I can become easily stimulated and is a strong chewer who may try to explore beyond normal fencing. One of my favorite activities is splashing around in kiddie pools—it's my idea of heaven! However, I don't do well being left alone at home for long periods, as my investigative nature leads me to explore my surroundings. With the right environment and a loving family, I am sure to bring joy and laughter to your life. If you're ready to give unique and wonderful me the home I deserve, please put in an online application to meet me. *Thank you to Sharon for sponsoring this wonderful dog at the Burnice Kraemer Sanctuary and giving him the chance for a better life.

Although I'm still working on my house training, with patience and love, I'll have it down pat in no time. With my playful and loving personality, I will absolutely thrive in a home where I can bond with my family and be a part of their everyday lives. I'm good with other dogs and children, but cats are an unknown. I don't like being alone all day, so I'd be best suited for a home where someone is around to keep me company. Since I'm just a puppy, children in the home must be at least 6 years of age. I know I'm cute and everyone will want me, but please be sure you're ready to take on a puppy as it's similar to having a newborn (2-legged kind) in the home. It's a lifetime commitment, not a temporary one where the love and attention wears off after I'm grown. I am a special guy who loves to play fetch and takes walks like a pro on a leash. I enjoy love, affection, attention, and toys, and can be a delightful companion for those who understand my needs. My previous owners had to surrender me because they could not provide the care I require.

Read more about Anton

I have some challenges that need attention from a patient and experienced owner. I would do best in a home with no cats or other dogs, and due to my food aggression, I may nip or bite when eating. I am also scared of loud trucks, so a calm and quiet environment would be ideal for me. I am house and crate trained, which is a great start! I will need continued training and behavior correction to help me become the best version of myself. I am not suitable for homes with young children but might do well with older children who know how to respect a dog's space and boundaries. I am looking for that special someone who can give me the time, love, and training I need. If you are up for the challenge and believe you can provide a stable, loving home, please fill out an online application to come and meet me. 28. Trixie

Adult · Female · Terrier / Mixed (medium coat) · 46 mi from Oxnard

Meet Trixie! Trixie is a petite terrier mix who weighs just 9 pounds and has long, fluffy hair with a little coarse texture and the cutest curly fountain tail you’ve ever seen. We spotted her in a sea of small dogs at the Carson Shelter, and we’re so glad we pulled her. Her name means “charming trickster,” and she lives up to it every day. She makes her foster mom laugh constantly and runs around the house like a little circus dog doing parkour. She’s the smallest dog in her foster household, but she’s convinced she’s a big dog, and that confidence is part of her charm. She’s an excellent watchdog who’ll let you know who’s coming, who’s going, and who doesn’t belong. She reads the room well, too. When it’s time to rest, she follows suit, and at night she loves to burrow under your covers. During the day, she loves to play, chew on toys, and sprint from one end of the house to the other. She adores other dogs, enjoys playing with her foster siblings, and is a reliable referee during a game of tug-of-war. She’s a little cautious with new people at first, but once she sees you’re good, she’s in your face, giving kisses and happy to be held. Trixie is the dominant girl in her home, and she does best with a dog companion who matches her energy. She’s spayed and fully vaccinated, and she’s about 95% potty trained, so she’ll need a watchful eye to get outside on time. She’ll be the best and most entertaining little companion for life!

How to adopt from Forte Animal Rescue

    1. Volunteers at Forte Animal Rescue will work with you to identify your interests and needs in regards to a companion animal that would be suitable for your home. Our Adoption Questionnaire (PDF) for Dogs or Cats covers most of the issues which we have found relevant to helping you find your new companion and smooth the transition for both of you. 2. After reading your questionnaire, one of our volunteers may make suggestions as to which animals may be best suited to you and your lifestyle and make an arrangement for you to meet them at our Weekend Adoptions or in their foster homes to get to know each other. 3. If you fall in love on the spot, please make sure you have read the "Before You Adopt" section because this is a big, and important decision, not just for the human involved, but also for the companion animal. We can then proceed with the next stop of the adoption process which is commonly called the "Home Safety-Check" 4. An Adoption Fee is required along with a signed adoption agreement, which ensures that if, for any reason, you are unable to keep the animal, he/she is to be returned to Forte Animal Rescue only. 5. Finally, we personally deliver your new family member to your home.

Adopting a dog in Oxnard

Most rescues ask you to fill in an application, meet the dog, and pay an adoption fee that usually covers spaying or neutering, vaccinations and a microchip. Many are foster-based, so you'll often meet your dog in a volunteer's home rather than a shelter.

Senior dogs are often the calmest companions and the slowest to find homes. If you'd like a settled, affectionate dog, ask the rescues about their older residents.

Puppies go quickly, so if you've fallen for one, contact the rescue soon. Ask how big they're expected to grow, and plan for plenty of house-training and training in the first few months.
