3. Curly

Adult · Male · Great Dane / Mixed · 13 mi from Columbia

Hey there, I’m Curly! I’m a handsome 1-year-old brindle Great Dane weighing right around 80 pounds. Back in early October, a hunter found my brother and me out in the woods when we were very thin and dehydrated. Thankfully, we’ve been on a good feeding schedule ever since and have already put on 10 to 15 pounds! Everyone here says I am a total sweetheart. I'm super gentle with people, take treats nicely from your hand, and walk really well on a leash! I’m currently working on my housetraining, and since I love snacks so much, I'm a big fan of training time. I also get along great with other dogs! Even though I'm a big boy who likes to get vocal and chatty while playing, I'm actually very gentle with my dog friends.

Read more about Curly

I am all set on my vet care, too! I’m neutered, microchipped, caught up on all my vaccines, and tested negative for heartworm and tick diseases. I would love nothing more than a cozy home and a family to call my own. Come say hi to me soon!

4. Larry

Adult · Male · Great Dane / Mixed · 13 mi from Columbia

My name is Larry, and I’m a 1-year-old tan Great Dane weighing around 75 pounds! Earlier this month, a kind hunter found my brother and me out in the woods when we were severely underweight and dehydrated. Since then, we’ve been on a steady feeding schedule and have already gained a healthy 10 to 15 pounds! Even after a rough start, I am the sweetest, most gentle big guy. I walk nicely on a leash, take treats very softly from your hand, and love playing with other dogs! I can get pretty vocal when I play, and I also like to do some goofy mouth play, though I’m always gentle and never put any pressure down.

Read more about Larry

Because I don’t quite realize how big I am yet, I’m currently learning not to jump up when I get excited, and I'm also working on my housetraining (luckily, I'm super treat-motivated!). One funny thing to know about me is that when my brother and I were put in separate outdoor runs after getting neutered, I got bored and showed everyone I can climb a fence! I’m neutered, microchipped, up to date on my shots. I’m so ready to trade my days in the woods for a soft bed and a loving family. Come meet me soon!

9. Demi

Adult · Female · German Shepherd Dog / Mixed · 13 mi from Columbia

Hi, I’m Demi! I’m a 3-year-old, 70-pound German Shepherd mix who just loves being right in the middle of things. I’m super friendly, great with kids, and an easy passenger in the car. I’ve even gone out to busy adoption events and did great with all the new people and activity! I am very food-motivated, so if you have treats in your hand, you have my full attention. That makes teaching me new things pretty easy! As far as other pets go, I’m not a fan of cats, and I don't like dogs that play super rough or get in my face. I’d be happiest in a cat-free home where I can be your one-and-only, or live alongside a calm, polite dog who respects my space. I’m spayed, microchipped, and fully caught up on my vaccines. If you’re looking for a sweet, social shepherd to take on drives and spoil with treats, come say hi!

Puppy · Male · Labrador Retriever / Shepherd / Mixed (short coat) · 21 mi from Columbia

MCROY NEEDS A FOSTER OR FOREVER HOME!!!!

Name: McRoy Best Guess for Breed: Lab/Shepherd

Best Guess for Age: 6 weeks as of October 21, 2026 SEX: Male

Estimated Weight (puppies' weights change quickly!): 6.5 lbs as of October 21, 2026

Gets Along With: Most puppies are in the prime of their socialization window and will do well with other dogs, cats and kids so long as they receive patience and proper training.

Currently Living at: Shelter - these pups need a DC-area foster home or an adopter to make their way out of the shelter.

Read more about McRoy

Special Adoption Considerations: Puppies under 6 months of age need to have multiple potty breaks/exercise throughout the day. Potential adopters with a standard 8-hour workday must be willing to make arrangements to meet the needs of their puppy.
McRoy is Looking For: Hiya! Me and my littermates have loved our time in the puppy pile and with our mom Maple, but we are each ready to pack our bags and find our very own forever home! I'm looking for a home that will let me play with toys and get my puppy zoomies out and give me snuggles in between playtimes. When I'm a little older, I can't wait to explore my new neighborhood on lots of walks, and I'd really like to make a bunch of doggie friends along the way. Oh, and I should probably take a puppy obedience class or two so I can show you how smart I am. What do you say? Do you have room in your heart for me?

What My Foster Says About Me: Coming soon!

Puppy Vetting Requirements: Lucky Puppies have had their age appropriate vaccines, but may not yet be “fully” vaccinated. It is the adopter’s responsibility to ensure that the remaining puppy vaccines are given at the appropriate time. Please also keep in mind that, until your puppy is fully vaccinated, they are at greater risk for illness than an adult dog.

19. Dior

Adult · Female · American Pit Bull Terrier / American Bulldog / Mixed · 16 mi from Columbia

Courtesy post: Some dogs lose their home once. Dior has lost hers more than once, and somehow, she still has nothing but love to give.

Please take a minute to read Dior’s story. This beautiful girl deserves a happy ending, and we desperately want to help her find it.

Read more about Dior

At just 4 years old, Dior has already experienced more heartbreak than any dog should. She was surrendered by her original owner when she was only a year old, but eventually found what she thought would be her forever home with an elderly couple in their 80s who absolutely adored her. She became her dad’s constant companion. They were inseparable. She stayed by his side, walked gently beside him, and gave him the kind of unconditional love only a dog can give.

Sadly, both of her beloved humans have since passed away. Their neighbor, who is now caring for Dior, stepped in to make sure she wouldn't be left without somewhere to go. But despite their best efforts, Dior needs a new forever family of her own.

And here's the thing about Dior... she is SO easy to love.

She is a professional cuddler who loves nothing more than snuggling up with her person, preferably right in bed beside them. She has a serious obsession with tennis balls, enjoys her outdoor playtime, loves her toys, and knows her commands. She is affectionate, devoted, gentle, and happiest when she has someone to call her own.

Dior is looking for a home where she can be the one and only pet. She deserves a home where she doesn't have to compete for attention or navigate life alongside other animals. She has also shown focused curiosity toward cats, so a cat-free home is recommended.

Dior would do best in a quieter home with a predictable routine, where she can soak up all the love and attention. Her experience with children is limited, so any placement with kids would need careful consideration.

She is currently around 72 pounds and working toward a healthier weight.

We know her perfect person is out there. Someone who wants a loyal companion, a cuddle buddy, a tennis ball enthusiast, and a best friend who will adore them with her whole heart.

Dior has already had to say goodbye to the people she loved most. She deserves to stop wondering where she belongs. She deserves a home where she can unpack her bags, climb onto the couch, steal a spot in bed, and finally know that she's staying.

Let's make sure Dior's next chapter is her forever chapter.

Prince Frederick, Calvert County, Maryland. Her current caretaker is willing to travel for the right home.

Dior is spayed and up to date on vaccines.

If you are interested in giving Dior the loving home she deserves, please Contact Beck at

Heartworm dogs can resume full active and normal lives, but need to be kept calm for 4-6 weeks after treatment. We are happy to discuss where in the treatment process this Lucky Dog is in right now! Just email the adoption coordinator - the address is at lower left!

26. Dakoma

Young · Female · Rottweiler / Mixed · 21 mi from Columbia

DAKOMA NEEDS A FOSTER OR FOREVER HOME!!!!
Name: Dakoma Best Guess for Breed: Rottweiler mix

Best Guess for Age: 1.5 years as of Oct. 2026 SEX: Female

Approximate Weight: 60lbs as of Oct. 2026

Gets Along With: Other dogs! We haven't seen them with cats or kids but we are happy to discuss integration techniques with any potential adopters!

Currently Living at: South Carolina shelter---needs DC area foster or forever home!

Read more about Dakoma

Special adoption considerations: Damota is a truly Lucky Dog. She tested positive for heartworms, but landed in a place where heartworm treatment is provided! Heartworm is not contagious to people or other pets, but results from mosquito bites. Heartworm, if left untreated, is life threatening, but after treatment, dogs that were heartworm positive should suffer no significant long-term effects so long as they are kept on a monthly heartworm preventative. Heartworm dogs can resume full active and normal lives, but need to be kept calm for 4-6 weeks after treatment. We are happy to discuss where in the treatment process this Lucky Dog is in right now! Just email the adoption coordinator - the address is at lower left!
Dakoma is Looking For: Her forever home! This big girl's body includes a big heart to love her future forever family with! She'd like to request plenty of snuggle time and maybe a belly rub or two. She'd also like to request lots of walks around the neighborhood and other adventures, and she'd love to make lots of doggie friends to play with.

Special adoption considerations: Dogs from Puerto Rico have a major transition to go through when they arrive and will need humans who are very committed to socialization. We think this pup would do best with either a resident dog or a family who can make sure they can go on walks regularly with other dogs, visit the dog park, or go to doggie daycare to learn the ropes.

Blackie is Looking For: Hiya! Me and my sister Mollie are the age of perfect puppy perfection! We are past all the crazy super young puppy stage but we're still young enough to be adaptable and filled with silly cuteness. I can't wait to take lots of walks and go on other adventures. Oh, and I'd love a chance to play with other pups as much as possible. That's really fun!!
What My Foster Says About Me: Blackie is a smart, curious, and people-loving pup who enjoys exploring his surroundings and soaking up attention, especially from kids! He’s already learning commands like “sit” and “come here” and responds well to gentle redirection. While he’s still building confidence around traffic and new experiences, he shows potential to continue growing with patience, encouragement, and love. Blackie is ready to find a home where he can learn, explore, and thrive!

Adopting a large dog in Columbia

Large dogs need room to stretch out and plenty of exercise: at least one good walk a day, and a secure yard is a bonus. Check your lease too, as some landlords limit the size or breed of dog.

Start training from day one. A big dog who walks nicely on a leash and doesn't jump up is a pleasure to live with, and many rescues can recommend a local trainer.
