We feel our comprehensive adoption process which includes not only taking the time to match the dog to the prospective new owner but helping to educate that owner in responsible dog care, allows us to find the best homes for our little buddies and the best companions for you!
Each week we use USDA certified transports to bring dogs from high-kill shelters in the south to our fosters where they all receive the appropriate medical care and are placed in nurturing loving homes while they await placement in their forever homes.
Interested in one of our dogs? Great! Now that you've seen them here, you'll need to go to our website where you'll find our list of adoptable dogs (updated every week). Then, it's just a simple process of finding a dog you're interested in and filling out an application on our site.
Once we receive your application, whoever is fostering that particular dog will contact you and do a short over the phone interview to complete your application process. Then, they will set an appointment with you to come out and "visit" with the dog you're interested in (we want to make sure that not only are you a good fit for the dog but that the dog will fit with you). If everything works out, you'll be able to take Rover (or Spot, or Jax) home with you that very day.
A couple of things you should know:
We can't hold dogs over the phone or via email.
Adoption fees vary based on breed.
All of our dogs have been vet checked and dewormed (if possible due to age, additional treatment may be needed).
We provide a spay or neuter voucher to all of our adopters.

Estimated Weight (puppies' weights change quickly!): 3.8lbs as of 11/3/2026

Read more about Babushka
Special Adoption Considerations: Puppies under 6 months of age need to have multiple potty breaks/exercise throughout the day. Potential adopters with a standard 8-hour workday must be willing to make arrangements to meet the needs of their puppy.
Babushka is Looking For: Hi! The six of us – Bumbleberry, Booparella, Bonbon, Bixie, Barktholomew, and Babushka – are a pretty adorable bunch and have loved our time together in the puppy pile, but we're ready to split up and find our very own homes. Exciting, right?! In exchange, we promise endless love, puppy kisses, and loyalty for all our days. We can't wait to meet you, forever families! We'll show you our best smiles (unless we're in the middle of a puppy nap, then you might just get our sleepy faces!).
What My Foster Says About Me: Coming coon!
Puppy Vetting Requirements: Lucky Puppies have had their age appropriate vaccines, but may not yet be “fully” vaccinated. It is the adopter’s responsibility to ensure that the remaining puppy vaccines are given at the appropriate time. As part of the adoption contract, it will be your responsibility, as the adopter, to ensure that this is done no later than 3/18/2027. There are NO EXCEPTIONS and NO EXTENSIONS to this date. A non-refundable spay/neuter deposit will be collected if you would like Lucky Dog to pay for this animal to be spayed/neutered at one of our low cost partner vets.
Your new puppy will need to work on their house training and will also need to go to obedience school so they can grow into a well-socialized dog! TO ADOPT: The adoption fee for this puppy is $485, which includes the cost of routine vetting and transport from the shelter. Puppy Vetting Requirements: Lucky Puppies have had their age appropriate vaccines, but may not yet be “fully” vaccinated.
16. Toby
Adult · Male · Shih Tzu / Jack Russell Terrier / Mixed (long coat)

TOBY NEEDS A FOREVER HOME!!!!
Name: Toby Best Guess for Breed: Shitzu / Jack Russell Terrier
Best Guess for Age: 5 years as of Nov 2026 SEX: Male
Approximate Weight: 11.4 lbs
Check out this video of Toby: https://youtube.com/shorts/fnroecSqSvI
Read more about Toby
Gets Along With: Other dogs! We have tested Toby with some of the cats at the shelter, and he did not seem particularly interested in chasing or pouncing on the cat. While this is a positive sign that Toby could live with a cat, he has not done so to our knowledge. If you have cats in your home, we are happy to discuss with you how to best introduce a new pup to your pack. Toby is not recommended for homes with children
Currently Living at: A DC area foster home
Special adoption considerations: Toby is not recommended for homes with children because he can be nippy when afraid or meeting new people.
About Toby: Meet Toby, an adorable 5-year-old Shih Tzu mix who's looking for a second chance at his happily ever after!
Toby was adopted in South Carolina, but just a few weeks later, his world was turned upside down when his adopter suffered an injury that required surgery and could no longer care for him. Through no fault of his own, Toby found himself back in rescue, hoping to find a family to call his own.
Toby is a sweet little guy who just needs a little time to feel comfortable with new people. He can be nervous when first meeting strangers and may nip if he feels scared or overwhelmed. But once he realizes you're a friend, his affectionate personality shines through! Toby warms up quickly and transforms into a loving little cuddle buddy who enjoys being close to his people.
The good news is that Toby gets along great with other dogs! He also did well with cats during his shelter cat test, suggesting he could be a good fit for a home with feline friends.
Because Toby can be fearful and may nip when nervous, he is not recommended for homes with children. He would do best in an adult-only home with patient adopters who understand that some dogs need a little extra time and space to build trust.
Toby has already experienced the disappointment of losing a home, and he's ready for a fresh start. With a little patience, kindness, and plenty of snuggles, this sweet boy will reward his new family with lots of love.
Could you be the one to give Toby the forever home he deserves?
What My Foster Says About Me: We'll update this section when Toby has spent more time with his foster.

Lacie is Looking For: Hi! Me and my littermates - Lolie, Lorenzo and Louie, have loved our time in the puppy pile, but we have all split up to get our own homes. I'm looking for one where I get to explore the world by the side of my humans, burn all my young-dog energy in romps, make new pup pals - and go to dog school so I can show how super smart I am! In exchange I promise love and loyalty for all my days.
What My Foster Says About Me: Coming soon!
Puppy Vetting Requirements: Lucky Puppies have had their age appropriate vaccines, but may not yet be “fully” vaccinated. It is the adopter’s responsibility to ensure that the remaining puppy vaccines are given at the appropriate time. Please also keep in mind that, until your puppy is fully vaccinated, they are at greater risk for illness than an adult dog.
Due to this puppy’s young age, she/he has not yet been spayed or neutered. As part of the adoption contract, it will be your responsibility, as the adopter, to ensure that this is done no later than 03/10/27.
If you are interested in adopting, please complete the Adoption Questionnaire online bit.ly/adoptaluckydog

Adopting a dog in Queen Anne's County
Most rescues ask you to fill in an application, meet the dog, and pay an adoption fee that usually covers spaying or neutering, vaccinations and a microchip. Many are foster-based, so you'll often meet your dog in a volunteer's home rather than a shelter.
Senior dogs are often the calmest companions and the slowest to find homes. If you'd like a settled, affectionate dog, ask the rescues about their older residents.
Puppies go quickly, so if you've fallen for one, contact the rescue soon. Ask how big they're expected to grow, and plan for plenty of house-training and training in the first few months.
