She has been friendly with people and dogs she’s met on walks, and she’s quickly picking up “sit.” Dixie enjoys snoozing in her crate and generally sleeps through the night. She’s making good progress with potty training and learning her leash manners, though she’ll need continued guidance as she settles in. Loud city sounds can feel overwhelming, and Dixie sometimes presses close to her person for reassurance. She will blossom with an affectionate family would help her keep building confidence. Watching Dixie come out of her shell has been her foster’s favorite part of knowing her. Now this sweet girl is ready for a family who will keep showing her how good life can be. Dingo

Hi! I’m Dingo. I just moved here from Georgia and I’m looking for a place to call home. I wonder if maybe that’s with you?
Read more about Dingo
I’m a good boy. I am crate trained and I don’t pull on the leash on walks. I love cookies and I’ll try real hard to figure out what I need to do to get one. I get along with other dogs in the place I’m staying and also did at the shelter. I don’t know if I like kitties or not, but my foster mom thinks I’d likely chase them. My foster mom thinks I could use some more socialization because sometimes I like to puff up and woof at things that surprise me but I recover well and I’m curious. I’m currently 30 pounds but my foster mom thinks I’ll likely be around 40 pounds once I get comfortable and fill out.
Well here’s some photos of me. If you have any questions send an email to

Location: Poughkeepsie, NY
Meet Bandit! Bandit is a 3 year old, 47 pound Australian Cattle Dog. This handsome boy is simply the best!
Bandit will need a home with ACD or similar breed experience, as he is a very high energy boy and needs to work on how to appropriately communicate with people. More info on this below.
Bandit currently lives with 3 other cattle dogs and gets along perfectly with them. He loves to play, but is respectful of their boundaries. He does have a bit of a rowdy play style which may overwhelm some dogs.
Read more about Bandit
Bandit walks well on leash and is working on his basic obedience skills. He is house trained and crate trained. Bandit is excellent in the car for short and long trips! He has been to pet friendly stores and was well behaved for those outings. He is learning to settle in the house after exercise, playtime, or training sessions.
We think Bandit would love to be a sport dog, he has so much energy and enthusiasm. He is trying FastCAT, Barn Hunt, and Agility with his foster family.
Bandit can be very mouthy and will playfully grab at arms and clothing. He is not doing this to be mean, he just doesn’t understand the best way to communicate yet. We offer him a toy to redirect him when he tries to grab us.

He’s still the same cheerful, tailwagging optimist who believes every person is a friend he just hasn’t greeted yet. Lucky is wonderfully social — he gets along with people of all ages, other dogs, and even cats, and he radiates that warm, “come sit with me” energy that makes you feel instantly adored.

In fact, he’d love a doggy sibling in his forever home. He’s the kind of pup who thrives with a buddy to nap beside, follow around, or gently boss around in that charming, curlypoodle way. He’s friendly, he’s joyful, and he has perfected the ancient art of leaning his whole fluffy self into your lap like a tiny, curly therapist. He’s the kind of dog who trots into a room and lifts the whole mood. The kind who makes you laugh without trying. The kind who reminds you that love doesn’t have to be complicated. If you’re ready to give this sweet boy the stable, happy life he deserves, you can apply to adopt him at www.rescuedogsrocknyc.org. Location: Riverside, RI
Lilly
1 yr old spayed red heeler
Lilly is a 30-40 lbs red heeler with a double mask. She is very playful and very cuddly all at once. She loves the people and loves the pets. She is fine with other dogs (has all the manners) but she rather be with people. She is currently hanging out with 4 other dogs of varying ages (2 female and 2 male) and she could care less if they all vanished tomorrow. However when her people go away and come back its like a long lost reunion.

She is young and has lots of energy but she settles nicely after getting pets. We snuggled on the couch all day the other day to binge watch a show after our morning walk and she just curled up next to me for a snuggle with no complaints. She loves treat training and already knows basics she just needs to calm down long enough to hear you say sit. She gets excited whenever anyone gives her attention. With basic training to form a bond.
he will settle nicely once the shock of all this recent change from home to home wears off.
She is spayed and microchipped. Up to Date on her vaccines and her preventatives.
She is looking for a forever person or people that she can adore all day and night.

23. Portia
Adult · Female · Pit Bull Terrier / Mixed · 18 mi from Hempstead

Here comes Portia (GA), a five-year-old mystery mix (possibly Retriever, Pit Bull Terrier, and/or Cane Corso) whose most important breed is, without question, irresistible. Portia came to the shelter with a collar so deeply embedded in her neck that it had to be surgically removed, a wound that says everything about her past and absolutely nothing about her spirit. Despite the pain and neglect she endured, Portia remains pure love. She adores people, loves other dogs, and will happily lean her 69 pounds against you as if to say, "Thank you for seeing me." The good news? Her neck has healed beautifully, and she's finally ready to find the forever family she's waited so patiently for.
Read more about Portia
Portia's DNA results are also in: she's 90% love bug, 8% house hippo, and 2% velociraptor. The velociraptor only appears during her occasional playful zoomies. While she enjoys a few bursts of fun each day, most of the time she's happy to curl up on her bed, watch TV, go for walks, spend time with dog friends, or simply be wherever her people are. She has the calm confidence of a much older dog, walks beautifully on leash, is crate trained, and has excellent house manners. She's smart, eager to learn, and, according to her foster mom, one of the sweetest, most affectionate dogs she's ever known. Portia isn't defined by what happened to her. She's defined by her resilience, her gentle heart, and her remarkable ability to love despite it all. Could those velvet ears be calling your name? Apply to adopt Portia at www.rescuedogsrocknyc.org. Her adoption fee is $450. She's been through the worst. Now she deserves the very best. Please be sure to reference this pet's name as Portia (GA) in case of duplicate names within the rescue. 24. Brooklyn
Adult · Female · Australian Cattle Dog/Blue Heeler (short coat) · 2 mi from Hempstead

Location: Madison, GA
Read more about Brooklyn
Brooklyn’s life before now is a mystery, but this mature lady is ready to make up for lost time and live her best life! Brooklyn is a full-size cattle dog, but she doesn’t throw her weight around, preferring to get to know the critters around her before really diving in. And in her foster home, Brooklyn is surrounded by
a lot
of critters… life on a farm has come with many new introductions: dogs, cats, sheep, goats, and a bunny! Brooklyn has taken it all in stride, and she listens to her foster mom when advised that something might not be the best choice. For example, while she sometimes thinks that cats are worthy of a taste test, she does great when supervised. Her dog brothers and sisters play rough, and so Brooklyn has needed some time to check them out, but she has started to join in on the fun! Compared to other cattle dogs, though, Brooklyn is low energy. She loves to roll around in the morning and go for walks around the farm, but she’s also happy to plop down in the sun for a nice afternoon nap.
Brooklyn is spayed and up to date on her vaccines and flea and tick medicine. She is potty trained and happily sleeps through the night in a crate or dog bed or on the couch (she’d probably also enjoy a human bed, but it’s currently quite full!). When meeting people, Brooklyn can be a bit shy and nervous, which she shows by licking you. She is also very food motivated (but not at all aggressive), which means that once she feels confident, she’ll likely be easy to train. Although timid at first
and not afraid to set boundaries with other nosy dogs
, Brooklyn would probably like a home with another dog or two (as long as they’re not too rough!) and lots of time to be outside in the sun or to go on walks. As far as cattle dogs go, she’s a great, low-key lady who still has lots of years, licks, and cuddles to give!

25. Millie
Young · Female · Chihuahua / Mixed · 18 mi from Hempstead

Millie (AL) is only about 15 months old, but her little heart has already weathered more than most dogs ever should. This Long Haired Chihuahua mix was given away to someone who then tossed her outside for four days with no food, no water, and no kindness. When rescuers finally reached her, Millie’s sad, soulful face said everything — she had been waiting for someone to notice she mattered. And she does matter. Millie is a gentle, sensitive girl who needs a moment to feel safe with new people. She’s not shy because she’s stubborn — she’s shy because she remembers what it felt like to be forgotten.
Read more about Millie
But once she realizes you’re one of the good ones, she softens like sunshine. Her tiny tail starts to wag, her eyes brighten, and she leans in with the sweetest, quiet devotion. She’s wonderful with dogs and cats, and she finds comfort in their company. Millie would thrive in a calm, patient home where she can blossom at her own pace and learn that love doesn’t disappear. If you’re the kind of person who sees beauty in resilience… if you have room in your heart for a small dog with a big story… Millie is waiting for you. 26. Chili
Adult · Female · Australian Cattle Dog/Blue Heeler (short coat) · 2 mi from Hempstead

Location: Berryville, VA
Meet Chili!
Chili is a 5 year old, 38 lb, spayed purebred girlie in need of an ACD experienced, child-free home (or older child), preferably in the VA/MD/PA area.
Chili is a very intense stereotypical cattle dog, and therefore an ACD experienced home is a must. She is living with three dog-savvy cats, three resident dogs (including her littermate sister), chickens, and goats, however, she is constantly irritating her sister, and would probably prefer to be the only dog in a home, as she is a mouthy cattle dog. She is also wary of strangers, and would love to have a quiet home without many people coming and going.
Read more about Chili
She was not happy in a more urban previous home, so her ideal home would be more rural. She is well behaved around the goats, but is very intense, and I think with training she could absolutely be used to successfully move livestock. She is very receptive to training, and is truly a joy to work with.
If you are ready for a challenge with a wonderful reward, Chili is your girl. I have truly enjoyed having her here, and working with her to become the best version of herself. If you think Chili would be a good fit, please email

27. Daisy Mae
Young · Female · Australian Cattle Dog/Blue Heeler (short coat) · 2 mi from Hempstead

Location: Gettysburg, PA
Hi, I'm Daisy Mae! As you can see I am a beautiful red girl, I am three years old and a good size at 35 pounds. I'm a sweet, very energetic girl. I love everyone, dogs as well. I walk well on a leash, I am house trained but I do not like it when the ground is wet, so if it's raining I need some coaxing to go outside and may have an occasional accident. I know how to use a doggie door. It was scary at first but I figured it out quick. I do like to chase moving things, but that is what a cattle dog girl is supposed to do right??
Read more about Daisy Mae
I will need a secure fenced in yard as I am a Houdini and like to go out and explore and can find a opening if there is one. If you are a runner or avid hiker, I'm your girl as I like to go go go and seek out new adventures. I do have an off switch as once you sit for an evening in, I'll come curl up with you and watch a good movie or help you read a good book. I also LOVE to go for car rides! I like to sit up in the seat with you and feel the wind in my fur. I get so excited I've been told I must have a pogo stick in my blood, hehe.
So if you are looking for your next hiking or running partner, cuddle bug and just a silly fun loving girl, please come meet me! I am up to date on my vaccines and preventatives and have been spayed so no puppies for this girl! I am currently being fostered in Gettysburg PA.

28. Whiskey
Young · Male · Pembroke Welsh Corgi / Mixed · 18 mi from Hempstead

Whiskey (AL) is stepping into a whole new life, and he’s meeting it with a gentle, hopeful spirit that’s impossible not to love. This 2yearold Corgi mix spent his past watching the world from outside, never truly included, never given the comfort of a real home. Now that he’s finally indoors and safe, he’s discovering warmth, routine, and affection for the very first time — and he’s blossoming. One of the first things you notice about Whiskey is his soft, expressive eyes. They’re warm and earnest, the kind that seem to ask if you might have a little love to spare. He’s wonderful with people, easy around other dogs, and carries a calm sweetness that makes him feel like an old soul in a young dog’s body.

29. Patch
Adult · Male · Australian Cattle Dog/Blue Heeler (short coat) · 2 mi from Hempstead

Location: Salem, Ohio
Patch
6 year old neutered mix
Hey, over the road truck drivers, need a copilot?
Read more about Patch
Hey, older lonely people, need a quiet companion? Honestly, Patch is happy to just be next to ya, curled up, quietly, waiting for you to call the shots. If you just want to stay in where it’s warm, Patch is fine with that. If you decide to walk around the yard, Patch is good with that. You want to romp around a bit? Patch is happy to join in. This guy is seriously no problem to have around. Completely house trained. You can go to town for hours, leave him loose in the house and he won’t bother a thing. Well, unless you leave food on the counter. And as much as he just wants to be close to his person, he doesn’t pester you for attention. Just get him outside for a couple minutes 3-4 times a day, let him sniff around, he’s content. I bet Patch would enjoy keeping the yard free of squirrels! In the car, Patch is the same as in the house. You won’t even know he’s there. He may need some encouragement to get him in the car, but once in, no problem.
Patch doesn’t bother cats. He may sniff them a little but that’s about it. I haven’t had him around young children but I’m guessing their high energy may make him nervous. I’m going to say he could be selective with other dogs. He wants to play & be a good friend but if the other dog wants to start some crap, Patch won’t back down!
If you think Patch might fit into your life, he is fostered in Salem Ohio. Send any questions to
janemamsberry@aol.com
or fill out an application at
ACDRA.org
and you will be contacted. Patch is current in all vaccines, heartworm prevention, and flea & tick prevention. A fenced yard would be ideal but not required.

30. Justin Bieber
Young · Male · Terrier / Mixed · 21 mi from Hempstead

Sometimes all you need is a 10lb scruffy little teddy bear named Justin Bieber to make life a whole lot sweeter. Our little JB has been BLOSSOMING in foster care, and we couldn’t be prouder of how far he’s come and thankful to his foster! Just a few weeks ago, this shy little guy was too scared to even step outside. Now he’s happily trotting along on morning walks, following his foster mom and doggy foster sibling around, and even starting to figure out that potty breaks happen OUTSIDE! His confidence is growing every single day, his adorable personality is shining through, and it’s hard not to be obsessed with him.
Read more about Justin Bieber
Justin Bieber is a 2 year old, 10lb terrier mix with the sweetest little face, the cutest scruffy curls, and SO much love to give. His favorite things are cozy naps, snuggling up in bed, following his favorite people around, and having a doggy friend to show him the ropes. He’s a low to moderate-energy little guy who would much rather spend his afternoons cuddling than running a marathon. JB is doing wonderfully with other dogs, has been calm around cats, and has done well with children once he warms up. He’s also crate trained and becoming quite the little walking buddy! He’s still a shy boy who needs patience with handling, being picked up, and potty training, but the progress he’s made with a little love, consistency, and routine has been AMAZING. And that’s the thing about Justin Bieber. He just needs someone to give him the time and love to become the confident, happy little dog we already know is in there. We would LOVE to see JB find a calm, loving forever home, ideally with another friendly dog to help him continue building his confidence. Someone out there is going to be SO lucky to call this little guy theirs.

Why adopt an adult dog in Hempstead
An adult dog's personality is fully formed, so the rescue can tell you how they are with people, other pets and busy households. Many have lived in foster homes and are already house-trained.
Grown dogs need less supervision than puppies and often know the basics, like sitting and walking on a leash, which suits people who work or have young children.
