1. Yuzu

Adult · Female · Jindo (Korean) / Terrier / Mixed · 24 mi from Hunter

Located in Brooklyn NYC -Meet Yuzu! A sweet, affectionate girl with a gentle soul, a silly personality, and so much love to give.Yuzu is a 6-year-old, 27-pound South Asian Village Dog who was rescued from the streets of Kathmandu, Nepal. Before coming to the United States, Yuzu was known as an incredibly friendly dog in her neighborhood. She would often visit a local outdoor café, happily approaching people, making friends, and enjoying all the attention. From the very beginning, Yuzu has loved people and children and has always had a special way of connecting with those around her. What makes her wonderful: Yuzu is affectionate, gentle, silly, smart, and incredibly emotionally intuitive.

Read more about Yuzu

She is a true companion dog who loves being close to her people and being included in everyday life. After coming to the United States, Yuzu spent six wonderful years with her family in California. She has lived in both a city with a backyard and a quieter beach town, and she has always enjoyed being part of family life.Yuzu loves cuddling, belly scratches, hiking, beaches, sunbathing, squirrels, lizards, and especially beach zoomies! She has a fun and playful side, but she is also perfectly happy relaxing beside her people. She is house trained, crate trained, comfortable being home alone, and has excellent house manners. She is very food motivated, knows her basic commands, and responds beautifully to positive reinforcement.Yuzu absolutely loves children and has successfully lived with several cats. She also enjoys the company of gentle, playful dogs she knows and trusts. She is a devoted little companion who wants nothing more than to feel safe, loved, and included in her family's everyday life. What She Needs: Yuzu would thrive in a quieter, peaceful environment where she doesn't have to constantly navigate the overwhelming stimulation of a busy city. Since moving to New York City, her family has realized that the loud noises, constant activity, and sheer number of dogs and people have been very difficult for her. The amount of stimulation has been overwhelming for her, and her family is concerned about her quality of life in this environment.Yuzu can be nervous around unfamiliar larger dogs, particularly when she is on leash. When she becomes overwhelmed or frightened, she may bark or lunge out of fear. This is something she has made meaningful progress with over the years through patience, positive reinforcement, and support. Her family believes she would be much happier in a quieter area with less dog traffic, access to nature, and ideally a yard.Yuzu needs someone who understands sensitive dogs and is willing to give her patience, consistency, and reassurance as she continues building confidence. She doesn't need a busy lifestyle—she needs a peaceful one. A home where she can enjoy walks in quieter areas, spend time outdoors, relax in her yard, and be close to her people would be ideal.Health: Yuzu is a happy and healthy girl, although her anxiety has increased since moving to the city, and she is currently on a full dose of anxiety medication to help her cope with the environment. Her family is seeking a home where she can experience less stimulation and hopefully enjoy a better quality of life. She has excellent house manners, is house and crate trained, and is comfortable being left home alone. Why we're rehoming her: This is an incredibly difficult decision for Yuzu's family because they love her very much. Yuzu has spent six happy years with them in California, and she has been a cherished member of their family. They have watched her grow, traveled through different environments with her, and know how loving and special she is.Unfortunately, since moving to New York City, they have realized that the busy urban environment is simply too overwhelming for Yuzu. The constant noise, activity, and high density of dogs have made it difficult for her to feel comfortable and relaxed. Her family doesn't want her to spend her life feeling ov

3. Penny

Adult · Female · Cane Corso Mastiff · 24 mi from Hunter

Meet Penny! A Loving lady looking for the perfect match.Penny is a 2.5 year-old Cane Corso that weighs around 118 pounds. What Makes Her Wonderful: Penny is a deeply loving, affectionate girl who is happiest when she is close to her family. She is incredibly bonded to her people and absolutely adores her young children. At home, she is a total cuddle bug who loves attention, belly rubs, and being included in whatever her family is doing. Penny especially loves spending time outdoors. She could happily spend hours lying in the sunshine, following her family around while they garden, or simply relaxing nearby.

Read more about Penny

She isn’t a dog who needs constant activity or entertainment—she is perfectly content being your companion and soaking up the sun. We truly think she would love a home with plenty of outdoor space, and a farm or similar property could be a wonderful fit for her.As a Cane Corso, Penny has the loyal, devoted, protective nature that makes this breed so special. She is naturally watchful and may bark when someone unfamiliar first arrives, but she can warm up quickly when she realizes someone is a friend. In fact, she is currently doing wonderfully with two men inside the home replacing windows—she is relaxed, wagging her tail, asking them for pets, and enjoying their attention. Once she understands that someone is welcome, she can be incredibly sweet and affectionate. Her Health: Penny is currently doing very well on her daily fluoxetine, which has made a tremendous positive difference in her overall anxiety and ability to relax. With consistent medication, she is much calmer and has been able to stay home alone without being crated. She does have significant separation anxiety, which her family is actively managing and treating. Consistency is very important for her, and keeping her medication routine is a key part of helping her remain comfortable and successful.Penny also has some behavioral considerations that are important for her future family to understand. She has shown aggression toward small dogs, particularly small fluffy breeds, and has demonstrated resource guarding around other larger dogs. Because of this, we believe she would do best as the only pet in the home, with no small dogs or other small animals. Her family is committed to being completely transparent about her needs so that her next home can be one where she is understood, supported, and set up for success. Why We're Rehoming Her: Rehoming Penny is an incredibly difficult decision, and this is not something her family is taking lightly. -We love her very much, and she is deeply bonded to our family. She is affectionate, devoted, wonderful with our young children, and has so many qualities that we absolutely adore. However, we recognize that Penny needs a very specific environment in order to truly thrive. As a Cane Corso with strong guardian instincts, anxiety, and reactivity toward certain animals, she needs an experienced owner who understands the breed and is comfortable managing a powerful guardian dog.Our goal is not simply to find Penny another home—it is to find the right home for Penny. We believe her ideal family would have experience with Cane Corso’s or similar guardian breeds, no small dogs or other small animals, a securely fenced property, and the ability to provide her with consistency, structure, companionship, and continued support with her anxiety.Penny has so much love to give. She wants to be with her people, be included in their lives, spend time outside, and receive all the affection she can get. We are committed to finding her a home where her wonderful qualities can shine and where she can feel safe, loved, and understood for the rest of her life.

Walks are a particular favorite—he’s always happy to head out and explore alongside his trusted friend.Keanu needs a quiet home with a male adopter and must be the only dog in the household. 7. Arlo

Young · Male · Shepherd / Terrier / Mixed · 24 mi from Hunter

Arlo is a sweet, sensitive soul with a heart full of love, just waiting for the right person to help him find the courage to share it. He's the kind of dog who may not immediately run into your arms or shower you with kisses when you first meet him, but don't let his shy nature fool you. Behind those timid eyes is an incredibly loving boy who has so much affection to give. He just needs a little extra time to feel safe enough to show it.For Arlo, trust isn't something that happens overnight. New people and unfamiliar situations can feel overwhelming, and sometimes his first instinct is to hang back and observe from a distance.

Read more about Arlo

But underneath that uncertainty is a gentle, affectionate boy who truly wants to connect. With patience, kindness, and a little reassurance, Arlo slowly begins to let his guard down. And when he finally decides you're someone he can trust, you'll get to experience the beautiful, loving personality he's been keeping tucked away. While Arlo may be shy around people, his love for other dogs is a completely different story! This sweet boy absolutely adores making new doggy friends. There's something about being around other dogs that helps him feel more comfortable and brings out his confidence. Whether he's spending time with a canine companion or simply following their lead, having another dog by his side can make the world feel a little less intimidating.Because of this, Arlo would truly thrive in a home with another friendly, confident dog who can help show him the ropes. A canine sibling could be so much more than just a playmate for Arlo. They could be his source of comfort, his partner in adventure, and a reassuring example that people can be kind, gentle, and trustworthy. Sometimes, the best teachers have four paws and a wagging tail!Arlo's ideal family would be one that understands that the most meaningful relationships aren't always built overnight. He needs someone who won't rush him, who will celebrate his smallest victories, and who understands that progress might look like taking a few steps closer, accepting a gentle touch, or simply choosing to relax beside someone he trusts. And that's what makes loving a dog like Arlo so incredibly special. The first time he comes to you on his own, the first time he seeks out your affection, or the moment you realize he finally feels safe in your presence—those little moments will mean absolutely everything. Because when a shy dog finally gives you his trust, it's a gift unlike any other.Arlo doesn't need a perfect home or a perfect person. He just needs someone with a patient heart, a gentle approach, and the willingness to love him through the moments when he's still learning to be brave. Some dogs love you the moment they meet you. Others, like Arlo, need a little time to discover that it's safe to love. But the love waiting on the other side of that trust is something truly worth waiting for.Arlo has so much love inside of him, and he's just waiting for someone special to help bring it out. With the companionship of another dog and the unconditional love of a patient family, this sensitive boy has every opportunity to blossom into the confident, affectionate companion he's meant to be.Could you be the one who shows Arlo that he no longer has to be afraid, that he is safe, and that he finally has a place where he belongs?

8. Tazy

Adult · Male · Terrier / Shepherd / Mixed · 24 mi from Hunter

Tazy is a handsome 2-year-old Shepherd Mix weighing approximately 69 pounds, with a big personality, an incredibly intelligent mind, and an even bigger heart! This sweet, loyal boy has so much love to give and is searching for a special someone who understands that a dog like him needs more than just a home. He needs a purpose, a routine, and a person who will help him become the very best version of himself.Tazy is the kind of dog who forms deep bonds with his people. Once you're part of his world, you have a loyal companion who loves being by your side. He's affectionate, eager to learn, and happiest when he has something to do.

Read more about Tazy

Whether it's practicing commands, exploring the outdoors, or spending quality time with his favorite humans, Tazy loves having a reason to put that clever mind of his to work. And when we say Tazy is smart, we mean it! This boy already knows an impressive list of commands, including "go," "sit," "lay down," "stay," "paw," "up," and "come here," just to name a few! His intelligence and willingness to learn make him a wonderful candidate for continued training and enrichment. But with a mind as active as his, Tazy needs someone who will keep him challenged, engaged, and mentally fulfilled.Tazy is a dog who needs a job, even if that job is simply having a daily purpose. He's looking for someone who enjoys working with their dog, teaching new skills, practicing obedience, playing interactive games, and providing activities that make him think. Puzzle toys, scent work, structured training sessions, and other mentally stimulating activities would be wonderful outlets for his intelligence and energy. For Tazy, a tired body is great, but a fulfilled mind is just as important!Routine and consistency are especially important for this boy. Tazy would thrive with an experienced owner who can provide clear expectations, positive reinforcement, and a predictable daily schedule. Knowing what to expect and having a healthy balance of exercise, training, enrichment, and downtime will help him feel secure and set him up for success. And here's something that makes Tazy even more lovable—he previously lived with a cat and absolutely adored her! The two would play together daily, and Tazy would even give his feline friend affectionate little licks. He was so fascinated by her toys that he loved playing with her tiny furry toy mice, too! It's a sweet glimpse into the playful, affectionate side of this big boy. While he has a positive history with a cat, any new feline introductions should still be done slowly and thoughtfully. When it comes to other dogs, Tazy can become anxious and overly eager, so he will benefit from continued guidance, careful introductions, and an owner who understands how to help him remain calm and confident in social situations. With patience, consistency, and appropriate training, Tazy can continue developing the skills he needs to navigate the world more comfortably.Tazy's journey to finding a new home hasn't been an easy one. His previous family loved him deeply, but life in a New York City apartment became increasingly challenging for a dog with his size, energy, and need for stimulation. They ultimately made the heartbreaking decision to find him a home better suited to his needs. Not because he lacked love, but because they wanted him to have the opportunity to truly thrive. And that's exactly what we're hoping to find for Tazy—a home where he doesn't just fit in, but where he can flourish. His ideal family would have experience with larger, intelligent, active dogs and the time to dedicate to his physical and mental well-being. A home with plenty of space, ideally a securely fenced-in yard, would give him room to stretch his legs, explore, and enjoy the outdoors. But just as importantly, Tazy needs someone who is committed to giving him structure, a consistent routine, and meaningful activities that keep his busy mind engaged.Tazy isn't the kind of dog who will be happiest simply lounging aroun

THEY’VE BEEN THROUGH ENOUGH. NOW IT’S THEIR TURN TO LEARN THAT LIFE CAN BE GOOD. ❤️

Please welcome Paraguay, Argentina, Brazil & Columbia.

These four beautiful girls were among the dogs rescued from a condemned property where they lived covered in fleas, feces and urine, with little to no socialization.

Right now, they’re still in the shelter—and they’re struggling. The noise, unfamiliar surroundings and sheer overwhelm have made it difficult for them to understand that people are here to help.

But their story isn’t over. ❤️

This week, they’ll leave the shelter. We’re hoping that with quiet spaces, patience, gentle care and time, we’ll begin to see these scared girls discover their brave.

We can’t wait to meet the dogs hiding underneath all that fear.

Welcome, girls. Your good life is coming. ❤️

This handsome goofball just traded the noise and stress of an overcrowded shelter for the comfort of a foster home. Every kennel matters in a packed shelter, so by welcoming Seth to safety, foster mom Kelly also made room for another dog desperately waiting for their chance. ❤️

Seth is a young, healthy, fully vetted wigglebutt, estimated to be 3–4 years old and weighing in at 72 pounds. He's full of playful energy, loves his toys, and has a blast running around the play yard. He also tested well with other dogs, loves water and was even pretty indifferent to cats—a rare talent for a boxer!

Now all that's left is finding this silly, fun-loving guy the family he deserves. Stay tuned as we get to know Seth even better!

Welcome to the good life, buddy. We're so glad you're here. ❤️

19. Bia

Adult (3 years 3 months) · Female · Boxer (short coat) · 46 mi from Hunter

Meet Bia.

The vet believes Bia is around 2 years old, and as you can see, her transformation has been incredible.

Many of you followed the story of two Boxer moms and their puppies who were dumped in the woods in rural Texas. Bia was one of them. It took several days for our trappers to safely bring her in, and we’re so grateful she’s now safe with us. Rhea has already found her forever, and now it’s Bia’s turn.

Bia is a sweetie with so much love to give. She’s dog friendly, kid friendly, affectionate and has a great appetite, she loves treats! Her foster family describes her as a gentle, loving dog who enjoys being with people and other dogs.

Adopting a dog in Hunter

Most rescues ask you to fill in an application, meet the dog, and pay an adoption fee that usually covers spaying or neutering, vaccinations and a microchip. Many are foster-based, so you'll often meet your dog in a volunteer's home rather than a shelter.

Senior dogs are often the calmest companions and the slowest to find homes. If you'd like a settled, affectionate dog, ask the rescues about their older residents.

Puppies go quickly, so if you've fallen for one, contact the rescue soon. Ask how big they're expected to grow, and plan for plenty of house-training and training in the first few months.
