1. Regina Red
Adult (7 years 8 months) · Female · Brittany (medium coat) · 12 mi from Olean

Regina AKA Reggie was born around February 27 2019 and weighs about 45 pounds. Reggie is with us because her human could no longer care for her. Reggie is an absolute doll and we all fell in love with her instantly. Reggie gets along well with other dogs, cats, and kids of all ages. She loves walks and is wonderful on leash. She is house trained and affectionate. Her favorite thing in the whole world is snacks/food and snuggling with her humans!
Some nuances that we've learned about Reggie in foster care:
Read more about Regina Red
*She is obedient and knows basic commands.
*Reggie seems to fear getting into cars. In order to have her jump into a car, we throw a treat onto the seat and she'll jump in the car to get the treat (sometimes takes some coaxing). Once she's in the car, she lays down and rides nicely.
*She walks beautifully on leash with no pulling. When I stop for a second, she comes running back to me and sits/pushes up against me. She's either seeking safety/comfort or was trained to do this, but we reinforce this good behavior by telling her "Good girl to place".
*Reggie will "likely" stay with you off leash, but we "play it safe" and leave her on leash as she is very interested in the deer, squirrels etc.
*Reggie does not and has never gone "potty" on walks. She holds it until she gets home. She's 100% housebroken and does her business only when running in her fenced in yard.
*She really really loves her treats and food and eats her meals too fast, so we feed her with a slow feeder bowl that slows her down and will go with her when adopted. The Adoption Fee for this dog is $450.00
Adoptions fees vary based on adoptability. In general our fees include spay/neuter, all age appropriate vaccines, Home Again micro-chipping & registration, worming & flea control - a "complete" pet. We accept CASH or Visa/Mastercard ONLY.
Joyful Rescues has no funding except for our adoption fees and miscellaneous donations. Pet care and vet bills are expensive - you must be ready to take on this financial (as well as emotional) responsibility. YOU MUST BE AT LEAST 25 YEARS OF AGE TO ADOPT A DOG FROM JOYFUL RESCUES
We keep our pet list as up-to-date as possible. As soon as a pet is adopted, it is removed from the list. If a pet is still showing, it is still available for adoption.

2. Jax Allen
Adult (9 years 6 months) · Male · Australian Shepherd (long coat) · 12 mi from Olean

Jax was born around April 15 2017 and weighs about 55 pounds. Jax is with us because his owner could no longer care for him. Jax rides well in the car and walks ok on a leash. Jax has been around children of all ages, cats, and dogs and does well with everyone. Jax has a lot of energy and is very smart! We will be looking for a home that can meet both his mental and physical exercise needs since his world is fast and fun! He is a smart boy and learned the dog door quickly, but for some reason he thought he had to BURST through it instead of walk. It's just how Jax rolls and he surely doesn't act his age. He has learned how to swim and LOVES it even though he is still a bit splashy with his front legs. He is a very funny boy. We've also discovered that he loves to play fetch and does bring the toy or ball back for you to throw again.

3. Ricky Ras
Young (1 year 9 months) · Male · Chihuahua / Pomeranian / Mixed (medium coat) · 12 mi from Olean

Ricky Ras was born about January 26, 2025 and weighs about 10 lbs. When a dog comes into Rochester Animal Services in poor condition or has a potential behavior issue they deem the dog "Rescue Only" and when I saw this sad looking soul come through in an email saying second request and time was running out I felt the urge to offer him a soft place to fall. It was wonderful that a RAS volunteer met me in Dansville for the tradeoff. The story goes that Ricky had been on the run in the CITY of Rochester for some time and terribly fear protective and had to be caught with a net!!! I can't imagine how frightened he was and he was acting badly upon entry to the shelter. There are notes that within 2 days he was "eating well, shy but not aggressive" so he was settling. The poor little guy had fleas so bad there was hair loss and a very itchy secondary bacterial infection and several nasty mats. This would make most of us a little snarky! He came here a couple weeks later and was easy to handle upon being removed from his transport crate. He did ride well in the car on the two hour trip not making a peep. He is doing very well with the other dogs here. House training seems to be doing well and he has learned to use the dog door. With any of these small dogs floor potty pads being available just makes life easier. He has been fine with us humans but we've given him space and time - he's been through A LOT! He did nip his foster Dad as he was picking him up to go to the vet to be neutered. Is it possible he knew where he was going and for what??? Well, this was quite the story and as he continues to heal both physically and emotionally, we look forward to an application from someone willing to give him a forever home where nothing bad will ever happen again. Update: Ricky has grown a GORGEOUS fluffy, wavey, coat of fur and enjoys being brushed. He particularly loves one person here and shows her just how much love and affection he has been starved of for however long we've no clue. When picked up and held against her chest he licks her neck, snuggles in, and wiggles and wags - ADORABLE for someone that is willing to give him the time he needs and someone that understands he may not be ok in a high stress/social environment such as a Petsmart for a very long time, if ever. The Adoption Fee for this dog is $_350.00__.

4. Gizmo Chia
Young (2 years 7 months) · Male · Chihuahua / Mixed (short coat) · 12 mi from Olean

Gizmo was born around August 1, 2024 and weighs about 6 pounds. The reason Gizmo is with us is very perplexing. He ended up being given away or purchased, we are uncertain, on a Facebook group by a young family with a small child and a baby about a year prior. We were told he had bitten including the woman and the child so we were very cautious at first and accepted Gizmo knowing he may be unadoptable and he'd be able to live here as a sanctuary dog. We gave him space for a couple of days and then he came to us happily desiring our attention and touch. We saw an incredibly sweet little Chia emerge and it's been a few weeks and we genuinely ADORE him! He showed no signs of aggression so we decided to send him to show and tell at Petsmart with a capable handler just in case. The report back was glowing and that he did beautifully with all humans who approached him and even the kids, although we don't want to put him in a home with little kids so nothing more negative happens to him. One thing his foster mom noticed was when she bended to pick him up he was very uncomfortable and squiggled away and was hard to "catch". This behavior has subsided and she has to believe the child was not handling Gizmo appropriately or kindly and so the problems arose. Gizmo has been wonderful with the other dogs and even plays with them, we are told he is great with cats too. He has discovered the split antlers and enjoys a good chew fest. We are told Gizmo is house-trained but be prepared for accidents with big life changes and floor potty pads are always handy for these little guys. Gizmo rides well in the car and LOVES to cuddle under blankets. Gizmo has slight luxating patellas, but they don't bother him, and he runs, plays and jumps with no issues. So, here is his story and this is what we've discovered about this tiny, tan, love bug! The Adoption Fee for this dog is $350.00
Adoptions fees vary based on adoptability. In general our fees include spay/neuter, all age appropriate vaccines, Home Again micro-chipping & registration, worming & flea control - a "complete" pet. We accept CASH or Visa/Mastercard ONLY.

5. Koda
Young (1 year) · Male · Shiba Inu / Spitz / Mixed (medium coat) · 12 mi from Olean

Meet Koda! Born around June 19, 2025 and may top out 25–30 pounds, This handsome boy came into our care after his previous family faced unexpected financial difficulties.
Koda is an absolute social butterfly—he loves other dogs and is great with cats! While he hasn't spent much time around kids yet, his gentle nature makes us think he'd do wonderfully with respectful children. He’s also a fantastic travel buddy who rides beautifully in the car and is doing well on his leash training.
Did we mention how smart he is? Koda already knows "sit" and "down," and he loves a good game of fetch. But once playtime is over, he instantly transitions into the ultimate cuddle bug. He’d love nothing more than to snuggle up next to you while you read a book or cheer on the Bills.
And let’s be honest—have you seen that face? He is absolutely ADORABLE, and that little white tip on his tail is just the icing on the cake. This sweet, fun-loving boy is ready to find his forever family. Could it be yours? We are truly guessing at breed mix because "fox" isn't a choice.

10. Iko
4 Months 6 Days · Male · Shepherd / Mixed (short coat) · 48 mi from Olean

Meet Iko!! This adorable clumsey guy is searching for his forever home. He has long legs, big feet, and a sleek physique. He is a bit underweight, but enjoys meal time and treats! He is a little shy with new situations, but it just takes him a little time to get comfortable. He has been fantasic with the other dogs in the foster which range from a small mean Chihuahua to a extra large friendly Great Pyreense. He also plays well with another foster dog, Topo, but does get a little overwhelmed with Topo's high energy and hearding tendenancies. He has met the resident cat and is curious but hasn't chased or acted inappropriately around her.
Read more about Iko
Iko's foster is in a rual farm setting, of which Iko has been enjoying watching the farm animals and even will hang out around the yard lamb. He sleeps in a crate at night and when the humans are away from the home with a "chewy" which helps keep him content. He is a little whiney when alone, but the fosters believes once he feels completely safe and secure in his new environment he will be a great dog. He isn't too familiar with a leash, but does well off leash as he sticks next to his foster mom. He is friendly with everyone that he has met but does jump up with those big paws, so he is working on keeping all 4 on the floor. We are not sure what breed Iko is, we do know he is big puppy with a sweet heart!Apply today at www.sadiesrescue.org

14. Winnie
7 Months · Female · Hound / Mixed · 48 mi from Olean

Meet Winnie!
She’s our shy girl from Texas. Once she feels safe the butt wiggles and love is never ending. She’s happiest with her people and loves everyone she meets. She’s fostered with two kids (age 2 and 5), she loves them both and would happily lick any leftovers off them. She is still a puppy so she does jump but is learning her manners. Due to her nervousness we would recommend a home with respectful children willing to give her time to warm up.
She is extremely food motivated and willing to learn. She knows sit and is working on going into her crate on her own. She sleeps in her crate all night with no accidents, and only whines for a minute or two - but only because she doesn’t want to miss out on any fun.
She’s fostered with a dog of similar size and they’re slowly learning each other.

She was also fostered with other small pups in Texas and loved to play. We would suggest a meet and greet for any resident dogs.

He or she will come with a pre-scheduled appointment at our vet to be spayed or neutered that the adopter is obligated to keep. The puppy will also be microchipped at this time. Please consider the time and effort it takes to raise a puppy. Foster puppies are typically NOT potty trained. They require time and patience from their adopter. If you are NOT serious about adoption and have not discussed the possiblility of adding a new canine to your home with ALL live in family members, DO NOT APPLY. Volunteers spend countless hours reviewing applications, calling references, and scheduling home visits. Please be sure you are ready to add a puppy to your home BEFORE applying. Our puppy adoption fee is $400 plus a $50 training deposit, which is refunded to the adopter when he or she provides proof of having completed a basic obedience class with their puppy. As part of our adoption process, references both personal and veterinarian will be checked. Sadie's also requires a home visit before we adopt any of our dogs out; therefore we only adopt to our local WNY region.

15. Francine
Adult (1 year 1 month) · Female · Black Labrador Retriever / Mixed (short coat) · 48 mi from Olean

Meet Francine!
Regal beauty or cartoon character? We’re still trying to decide.
Francine is a gorgeous 58 pound black Lab/retriever type girl with long legs, an extra long nose, enormous paws and some very distinctive features. Her foster family suspects there may be a little German Shepherd in there somewhere... although based on those legs, we haven't completely ruled out horse. Francine has been in her foster home for a couple weeks and more of her personality comes out every day. She is sweet, silly, playful and has quickly settled into life with her foster family. One of Francine’s absolute favorite activities is splashing in her water bowl. Drinking from it is apparently only part of its intended purpose. If she can get some of the water onto the kitchen floor in the process, even better. She is doing wonderfully with potty training and has had no trouble understanding that business belongs outside. She is also learning the ropes of crate training and making progress, although confinement isn't exactly her favorite thing yet. She’s a clever girl, so her foster family continues to work on making her crate a comfortable, positive place.
Francine loves chewing on her chew bones and especially loves playing with her foster brother, Zuul, a pittie. The two have become great playmates, and when she's finished romping around, Francine is perfectly happy to curl up on the couch alongside him. And then there's the Francine flop. She knows how to sit, but when affection is involved, sitting frequently turns into slowly sliding herself all the way down until she's sprawled on the floor waiting to be loved. Kitchen, living room, outside... location doesn't seem to matter. At 58 pounds, Francine is currently underweight and has some filling out to do. Between those big paws, long legs and lengthy frame, she's going to be a substantial girl once she reaches a healthy weight.

Francine is spayed, potty trained, dog friendly in her foster home and learning more about home life every day. She has plenty of puppy like playfulness wrapped up in one very long, very lovable and wonderfully goofy package.
If you're looking for a beautiful girl who can make you laugh, splash your kitchen floor, play hard and then flop down beside you, Francine might just be your girl.

Adopting a dog in Olean
Most rescues ask you to fill in an application, meet the dog, and pay an adoption fee that usually covers spaying or neutering, vaccinations and a microchip. Many are foster-based, so you'll often meet your dog in a volunteer's home rather than a shelter.
Senior dogs are often the calmest companions and the slowest to find homes. If you'd like a settled, affectionate dog, ask the rescues about their older residents.
Puppies go quickly, so if you've fallen for one, contact the rescue soon. Ask how big they're expected to grow, and plan for plenty of house-training and training in the first few months.
