10. Amelia
Adult · Female · Pit Bull Terrier · 49 mi from Utica

Introducing Amelia — The Miracle Pocket Pitty! Some of you may already know Amelia from our Facebook posts. This little girl came to us in dire straits, having suffered the effects of multiple stab wounds and a severe beating. An infection followed suit. It was touch and go for a while, but Amelia rallied, fought the infection — with the help of medical professionals and dedicated staff — and won the fight. Her many stab wounds have healed, the fur is growing over the scars, and perhaps most importantly her resilient spirit has allowed her to trust in the humans surrounding her and move on from what was a deplorable lot in life. Our dear little friend has emerged completely from her ordeal as the beloved shelter spitfire! She enjoys her playtime and walks and is good on leash except for dog reactivity.

Adult · Female · Husky / Mixed · 45 mi from Utica

Meet Kira! Kira is a smart 3-year-old Husky mix with plenty of personality. She loves a good butt scratch and will reward you with an adorable little dance when you find just the right spot. She is very interested in her people and soaks up any bonus time she can spend with her shelter humans. Kira also likes having something to do, especially when she gets to use her brain. She enjoys playing tug with her favorite toy and working on enrichment like a peanut butter lick mat. As a Husky, Kira is not afraid to speak her mind! If you’ve ever wanted a dog you can have a conversation with, Kira may be your girl.
Read more about Kira
She would do best as the only dog in the home, where she can have her people all to herself. She may be able to live with cats, as she was not particularly interested in interacting with them beyond an initial sniff. As with any new pet, introductions with resident cats should be slow and closely monitored. Kira is also a nice passenger in the car — she climbs in and out gently and rides quietly! Kira is looking for a home where she can have opportunities to keep her mind busy, and, of course, get plenty of butt scratches!Current Weight: 52 lbsAdoption Fee: $250To apply: fcrspca.org/adopt

28. Nanook
Senior · Male · Labrador Retriever / Husky / Mixed · 49 mi from Utica

From Nanook’s current foster family:Nanook is a 9-year-old husky/shepherd/lab mix VERY deserving of a loving retirement home and comfy couch. He has come into our home from an uncertain past but has proven to be sweet and calm. His eye area is still healing from a previous injury. He walks great on a leash and rides well in a car.We started him in a kennel when we weren't home, but we quickly realized he wasn't going to destroy anything so once he settles in he is safe to be trusted out of a kennel. He is great with his foster brother, they mostly ignore each other. Like a true sibling he just wants equal attention.

He sometimes gets excited when he meets other dogs or takes a minute to warm up. We've seen no food aggression at feeding times. Nanook is very good with our child — gentle and loves to cuddle on her. We have seen no bad triggers with any kind of a person for him. Needs a home that understands husky behavior and noises, such as the-old-man-grumbles and the cute mini-howls when he wants something. Will need long-term medicine for his eye and anal fissures. Takes pills and receives eye drops without any problems. He is a perfect blend of an old man dog with bouts of a happy and playful soul!To set up a meet & greet or ask questions about Nanook, you can contact HumaneCNY at (315) 457-8762 or info@humanecny.org; or you can begin the adoption process for this great dog right now by filling out an application on our website, www.humanecny.org.Contact HumaneCNY if interested in this animal. How to adopt from Regional SPCA
We require all interested families to come in to the shelter and meet the dog or dogs that they are interested in (unless they meet a dog at an adoption event). We have a very thorough application which they can fill out and return to the shelter - we do not provide applications on line. We check vet, personal, and landlord references (we require a signed letter from the landlord and confirmation via phone call that pets are allowed). When an application is approved, we set up a meet and greet if there are other animals in the household. If not, the kids are ready to go home. We encourage all potential adopters to spend as much time with the dog(s) as possible before they head home, and an adoption contract is signed before the dog(s) go(es) home.
Adopting a dog in Utica
Most rescues ask you to fill in an application, meet the dog, and pay an adoption fee that usually covers spaying or neutering, vaccinations and a microchip. Many are foster-based, so you'll often meet your dog in a volunteer's home rather than a shelter.
Senior dogs are often the calmest companions and the slowest to find homes. If you'd like a settled, affectionate dog, ask the rescues about their older residents.
Puppies go quickly, so if you've fallen for one, contact the rescue soon. Ask how big they're expected to grow, and plan for plenty of house-training and training in the first few months.
