Louie and his brother Nico were from an unwanted litter of puppies being given away in the Dickson Walmart parking lot. Thank goodness for them, a foster home stepped up so we could take them in to be vetted and adopted to an approved family.
Louie is a calm, sweet boy. He has been around most farm animals, cats, other dogs and has no problems with any of them. He will be neutered prior to adoption. Check him out on our website:

1-year-old Lab/Great Dane mix… or maybe something else? We need YOUR help figuring that part out! Folks, sometimes identifying a breed is a guessing game for us, too! So we'd love to hear what YOU think this handsome boy might be!But one thing we know for sure… this big boy is a heart-stealing WONDER! ❤️At just a year old, he's already won over the hearts of every volunteer who has spent time with him. He's incredibly smart, sweet, and gentle with his people. And while his size might make him a little intimidating to walk, don't let that fool you. This boy sticks right by your side and genuinely enjoys your company. Now, let's talk about what kind of home he's looking for!Being a big, playful guy, he doesn't always realize just how BIG he is! He can accidentally knock things around and needs a family who understands that his size and energy sometimes come with a little extra chaos.

An active family or a home with a securely fenced yard where he can burn off some energy would be wonderful. He was previously adopted but returned due to some guarding tendencies that developed in the home. He initially did well with the resident dog during introductions, but sometimes the adjustment period in a new home brings out behaviors that weren't immediately apparent.Because of this, we recommend an experienced adopter, particularly if there are other dogs in the home. Someone who understands canine behavior, resource guarding, and proper introductions will be important to setting him up for success. We don't want his size or his challenges to overshadow the incredible dog he is. He's young, intelligent, affectionate, playful, and full of potential. He just needs someone who understands him, can provide the structure he needs, and will love this big boy for exactly who he is.Could that someone be YOU? ❤️Come meet him, fall in love, and while you're at it, tell us what breed mix YOU think he is!

They deserve a chance to find happiness again, and Henry is READY to meet his next person!✨ Here's what we've learned about Henry: He's incredibly sweet and gentle. He's easy to walk and an absolute pleasure to spend time with. He's one handsome fella, with a look that turns heads! He's a breed mix we don't see often at our shelter, making him extra special! And let's talk about those Airedale genes! ❤️ Airedale Terriers are often called the “King of Terriers” because of their impressive size and confident good looks. They're known for being intelligent, loyal, playful, and adventurous companions. With that adorable face and those distinguished features, Henry certainly looks like he could steal a few hearts around here! We know we don't have many pictures of Henry just yet. He only recently arrived, and our photographer hasn't had a chance to visit. But even with the quick cell phone pictures we've managed to take, this boy's beauty shines right through! We have a feeling once those professional pictures arrive, he'll have an even bigger fan club. ❤️But here's the thing: Henry deserves more than a pretty picture and a few likes. He deserves a FAMILY. He's already lost the home he knew, and we want his next chapter to be filled with love, soft places to sleep, walks with his favorite human, and the security of knowing he's finally home.We think someone is going to meet this sweet boy, fall head over heels, and wonder how they ever lived without him. 9. Sadie
Adult · Female · Pit Bull Terrier · 28 mi from Slayden

Sadie was found as a stray. That was August 14th and her owners never showed up. This sweet girl was diagnosed with demodex, a non-contagious skin condition that causes hair loss. We have treated Sadie and she is now almost completely recovered. We were fortunate enough to have a wonderful foster who has taken such good care, provided training and Sadie is not the perfect dog for anyone who is looking to add a low-key sweetheart to their family. Sadie is just now being made available for adoption and we do not believe she will be with us long.

10. Pretty Pittie Princess
Adult · Female · Pit Bull Terrier · 28 mi from Slayden

PRETTY PITTY PRINCESS | SHE'S SPENT LONG ENOUGH WAITING TO BE LOVED.Y'all, meet Pretty Pitty Princess, or just Pitty as we've all come to know her. ❤️ This sweet girl has had one rough road, and if there's one thing we wish everybody could understand about her, it's that she is so much more than her medical history and everything she's been through.Princess has spent MONTHS of her life waiting for somebody to give her a chance. She originally came from Benton County and ended up in the care of a veterinary office after going through some pretty serious medical problems, including a rectal prolapse that required surgery.
Read more about Pretty Pittie Princess
The folks at that office worked hard to get her healthy and cared for her for months while she waited for a home. Eventually, somebody adopted her, and everybody hoped she'd finally gotten the happy ending she deserved. Unfortunately, that adoption didn't work out, and she ended up right back at the veterinary office, where she spent even more months waiting. Then the veterinary office closed its doors. One of the employees who had been caring for Princess couldn't bear the thought of sending her back to the county shelter, knowing what could happen to her there, so she took her home herself. She's been caring for Princess for nearly a month now, giving her a warm bed, toys, attention, and all the love she can. The only problem is that she has five cats, and Princess absolutely cannot be around cats. Keeping everybody safely separated has meant rearranging her life and even missing work. And Lord knows, bills don't stop coming just because you're trying to do something good. Now Princess is being cared for between two temporary homes in Benton and Humphreys County, and we're getting to see even more of this girl's personality. And y'all, WHAT A PERSONALITY SHE HAS! ❤️Princess is a loving, affectionate, house-trained girl who wants nothing more than to be somebody's number one. She loves belly rubs, squeaky toys, playing fetch, splashing around in water, and being right beside her people. And when it's bedtime, you better make some room! She's a professional bed hog who will cuddle up beside you, take up just about the entire bed, and keep you warm all night long. She's also made herself a little buddy in her current temporary foster home, a 30-pound former Humane Society pup named Gremlin. These two have been getting along wonderfully during their supervised time together. We've learned that Princess LOVES attention, and if somebody else is getting petted, she's going to make sure nobody forgets about her! She'll practically climb right over her buddy like she's saying, "Excuse me, I believe you were supposed to be loving on ME!" Princess has the playful personality of a young Lab. She loves other dogs who can match her enthusiasm, but she does play HARD. Once she's medically cleared for energetic activity, another playful, sturdy dog with a similar energy level could be a wonderful companion. She's also perfectly capable of being the only dog in the house, and something tells us she wouldn't mind having all the attention to herself! She's met different people and has shown us just how loving she can be. She can be a little unsure around unfamiliar men at first, but with a patient introduction, she warms up and starts showing that sweet personality. We haven't seen her display aggression toward people in our care. She's just a girl with a big personality who sometimes needs a little time to get comfortable. ONE VERY IMPORTANT THING ABOUT PRINCESS: ABSOLUTELY NO CATS OR SMALL ANIMALS!Princess has a strong prey drive, and she cannot safely live with cats, chickens, rabbits, birds, ferrets, or other small pets. We cannot make exceptions to this. She is also capable of CLIMBING AND CLEARING FENCES, so she needs somebody who understands secure containment, proper leash handling, and supervision. Any resident dogs would need careful introductions. We want her next placement to work out because this girl has been moved ar

11. Daisy
Adult · Female · Pit Bull Terrier · 28 mi from Slayden

DAISY IS STILL WAITING FOR SOMEONE TO NOTICE HER She has been at the Shelter since February and needs her own home. Daisy was found as a stray at the river. She does okay with other dogs but really shines when she is with people, regardless of age. Daisy is a Pit Bull and with that comes a label that many people can not see past. We ask that you look past what her breed is and see her for way she is---a sweet, loving girl just looking for the right person. Could that be you?Daisy has been posted before. Her story has been shared, her pictures have been seen, and still, this sweet girl is waking up inside the shelter instead of in a home of her own.Sometimes the saddest shelter dogs are not the ones who have completely given up.
Read more about Daisy
Sometimes they are the ones who still look at every person with hope in their eyes, believing each new face might finally be the one who came for them. That is Daisy.Daisy was originally found wandering near Mason’s Boat Dock. When one of our volunteers went out to pick her up, they expected to have to catch a scared and frightened stray. Instead, Daisy simply walked right over, happy to see someone and ready to make a new friend. She had already wandered into a nearby yard and was playing with the homeowner’s dog like they had known each other forever. She was so trusting and so comfortable with people that she did not even need to ride back to the shelter inside a kennel. She rode beside our volunteer, looking out the window and enjoying the company, completely unaware that she was being taken to a shelter instead of home.We posted Daisy everywhere because we were certain somebody had to be missing a dog this loving. We waited for a phone call. We checked every message. We hoped somebody would recognize her face and come rushing through the shelter doors. But nobody came. When Daisy arrived, she had scrapes and scuffs across her face. We believe she had been wandering through the woods and trying to survive on her own. It is also possible she had an encounter with another dog along the way. Daisy can be selective about other dogs, so she may be happiest as the only pet. A proper meet-and-greet would be required if another dog already lives in the home. When it comes to people, though, Daisy is absolutely wonderful. She loves attention, walks, toys, fresh air, and spending time with our volunteers. She greets people with a wagging tail and those hopeful eyes, always ready to believe that maybe this person came to choose her.But every visit eventually ends. The volunteer walks away, Daisy returns to her kennel, and the shelter doors close for another night. There is nothing wrong with Daisy. She has simply been overlooked. We do not want her to become another good dog who spends months or years behind kennel doors because her pictures never reached the right family. Daisy deserves a couch to stretch out on, a yard to explore, and someone who will never leave her wondering why they did not come back. Please help us give Daisy another chance to be seen. Share her story, tag your friends, and tell someone about the sweet flower still waiting at the shelter.Daisy has never stopped believing that somebody is coming for her.We just pray she does not have to keep believing much longer. ❤️Daisy will be microchipped, and a Fi GPS tracker voucher will be included with her adoption. 12. Hobo
Senior · Male · Labrador Retriever · 28 mi from Slayden

HOBO HAS LOST HIS PERSON, HIS HOME, AND EVEN HIS SECOND CHANCE… BUT HE IS STILL WAITING HOBO IS PICK YOUR OWN ADOPTION FEE For nearly 14 years, Hobo belonged to Deborah. She was his person, his home, and the center of the only life he had ever known. Hobo never had to wonder where he belonged because, as long as he had Deborah, he was home. Then Deborah had to enter a nursing home, and Hobo’s whole world changed. He could not understand why his person was gone or why the life he had always known had suddenly disappeared. Deborah later passed away, and one of the things she wanted most was for her ole boy to be safe, loved, and given a home for the rest of his life.Hobo came to us carrying all those years of love and all that confusion.
Read more about Hobo
He was an old dog who had lost the one person he trusted most, and there was no way for us to explain to him that she was not coming back. Not long after coming into our care, Hobo slipped away from a transporter at an out-of-county veterinarian’s office. He was missing for more than a month. We searched, worried, and honestly feared we had lost Deborah’s ole boy forever. Somehow, Hobo survived, and when he was finally found, we were just grateful to have him back where we knew he was safe. The shelter slowly became the closest thing Hobo had to another home. He learned our voices, our routines, and which people he could trust. He grew attached to the volunteers who cared for him, and we grew even more attached to him. Then the day finally came when Hobo was adopted. We watched him leave believing that Deborah’s wish had finally come true. After everything he had survived, we thought Hobo was finally going to spend his remaining years in a real home. But only a few days later, Hobo came back. There had been an incident involving a child. Hobo bit, although he did not break the skin. Hobo is an elderly dog with arthritis and pain in his hips and back legs, and we believe that pain played a part in what happened. He was returned scared, confused, and so overwhelmed that he soiled himself in the vehicle. When he arrived back at the shelter that night, he hid beneath a tree. The volunteer with him did not have the heart to force him back into a kennel. Since the temperature was cool, Hobo was given the play yard to himself for the night. Once again, the shelter became his safe place. That may be the saddest part of Hobo’s story. He truly loves the shelter because it is where the people he trusts are, but a shelter was never supposed to become this ole boy’s forever home. After everything that happened when Hobo went missing, we wanted to give him every extra layer of protection we could. Hobo is now microchipped, and a Fi GPS tracker will be included with his adoption. Wherever Hobo’s next chapter takes him, we want to make sure he can always be found and brought safely home. What Hobo needs now is not complicated. He needs a quiet, adult home with a securely fenced yard, no young children, and no other dogs. He needs someone who understands that senior dogs can hurt, that boundaries matter, and that loving an old dog sometimes means giving him the time and space he needs.Hobo previously lived around cats with Deborah, so cats may be possible with careful introductions. He will also need his daily medication to help keep him comfortable.Hobo has already lost his person. He has already lost his home. He has already been lost on his own, found again, adopted, and returned. Please do not let the shelter be the final chapter of his story.Somewhere, there has to be someone willing to give Deborah’s ole boy the peaceful ending she wanted for him. A soft bed, a fenced yard, a quiet house, and one last person to call his own. Please share Hobo’s story. His person may never see our original post, but they might see the one you share. 14. Cocoa
Adult · Male · Terrier · 28 mi from Slayden

COCOA IS SAFE IN FOSTER, BUT HE CANNOT COME BACK TO THE SHELTERWe are begging for an adopter for Cocoa.Cocoa is safe right now. He has a foster home, people caring for him, and room to run and play. But foster care is temporary, and returning to the shelter is not an option for him. Cocoa needs someone to step forward and make the home he has been waiting for permanent.Cocoas story began with pain. When he came to us, he had a chain embedded in his neck. A chain had been left around him long enough and tightly enough to become part of his skin. We cannot imagine everything this boy experienced before reaching us, but even after all of it, Cocoa still wanted affection.
Read more about Cocoa
He still wanted someone to love him.Once Cocoa entered the shelter, the physical wounds were not the only things he had to overcome. The noise, confinement, and constant activity inside the kennels became overwhelming for him. Kennel stress began hiding the real Cocoa from everyone who walked past him.Inside a kennel, people saw a stressed and frightened dog. Outside of that kennel, we saw the affectionate boy who wanted to be close to us. We knew there was so much more to Cocoa than what the shelter environment allowed people to see. Then someone gave Cocoa a chance and opened their home to him as a foster. That is when we finally got to meet the real Cocoa.Cocoa is now running and playing with multiple dogs, and he absolutely loves them. He enjoys having doggy friends and being part of a pack. This dog, who struggled so much inside the shelter, is thriving when surrounded by other dogs in a home. And it is not only dogs that Cocoa loves. He loves the chickens too!His foster home has shown us that Cocoa is not meant to spend his life behind kennel bars. He is meant to run through a yard with other dogs, enjoy the company of his people, and finally experience what it feels like to belong somewhere.Cocoa is still frightened by loud noises. Because sudden sounds can scare him, he needs to remain secured with a harness whenever he is outside. He may also need medication during especially loud events to help him remain calm. He needs a family that will understand his fears, keep him safe, and give him reassurance when the world becomes a little too loud.Cocoa does not need to be someones only dog. He is already proving how much he loves living, running, and playing with multiple dogs. A home with friendly doggy siblings may be exactly what helps him continue feeling safe and confident. But Cocoa cannot come back to the shelter. The kennel environment is not a place where he can successfully live again. His foster family has given him safety, happiness, and the opportunity to show everyone the wonderful dog hidden beneath all that stress. We cannot allow everything he has gained to disappear because nobody stepped forward to make him theirs. He is safe today, but he still does not have a forever home.Cocoa is approximately 50 pounds and is already microchipped. His adoption will also include a voucher for a Fi GPS tracker to help his new family keep him protected. The chain is gone. The kennel is behind him. He is running with dogs, loving the chickens, and finally learning what a happy life feels like. Now we need someone willing to make sure he never loses it.Please do not scroll past Cocoa because he is currently safe in foster. Being safe in foster does not mean his story is finished. It only means someone gave us more time to find the person he has been waiting for.We are begging you to share Cocoa. Talk about him. Send his story to someone with other dogs who may be looking for one more member of their family. Help us find the person who will promise him that foster care is the last temporary place he will ever have to call home.ADOPTION FEESFixed Dogs: $100Not Fixed Dogs: $125Fixed Cats: $85Not Fixed Cats: $100Waverly Animal ShelterHumphreys County Humane Society108 Young RoadWaverly, TN 37185Shelter: 931-296-7319Email: animals@hchswaverly.comIf you are unable to reach

15. Pluto
Young (7 months) · Female · Pit Bull Terrier / Mixed (short coat) · 32 mi from Slayden

Meet Pluto!
Pluto is a wiggly, cuddly ball of puppy energy who is ready to find a family to call her own! This girl loves nothing more than racing around the house with her foster brother, showing off her zoomies, and then snuggling up with her favorite people. And when it’s time to settle down? Pluto is an expert cuddler who loves to burrow under the covers and curl up right next to you. Personal space is apparently just a suggestion!
Read more about Pluto
Pluto absolutely adores children and currently lives with an 18-month-old and a 3-year-old, whom she loves to shower with affection. She also gets along well with other dogs and would love a canine friend who can keep up with her playful puppy antics.
Pluto has spent her life living outdoors, so she’s still figuring out the whole indoor-dog thing. She’s making progress with potty training and crate training, learning which toys are appropriate for chewing (with so many tempting kid and cat toys around, can you really blame her?), and working on respecting personal space. She’s still a young dog with plenty to learn, so she’ll need a family willing to offer patience, consistency, and lots of positive reinforcement as she learns the ropes.
Pluto has also been exposed to lots of cats, but she hasn’t quite figured out that not everyone wants to play with her! When the cats hiss or run away, Pluto thinks they’re joining in on the fun and is ready to keep the party going. She isn’t aggressive toward them; she just has a lot of puppy enthusiasm and hasn’t learned to read feline social cues yet. A cat-free home would likely be the easiest fit for this energetic girl.
If you’re looking for a happy, affectionate, slightly goofy young dog who will keep you laughing, join you for playtime, and snuggle under the covers at the end of the day, Pluto might just be your girl! She’s still learning how to be the best indoor pup she can be, and with the right family, she has so much potential to blossom.

Adopting a dog in Slayden
Most rescues ask you to fill in an application, meet the dog, and pay an adoption fee that usually covers spaying or neutering, vaccinations and a microchip. Many are foster-based, so you'll often meet your dog in a volunteer's home rather than a shelter.
Senior dogs are often the calmest companions and the slowest to find homes. If you'd like a settled, affectionate dog, ask the rescues about their older residents.
Puppies go quickly, so if you've fallen for one, contact the rescue soon. Ask how big they're expected to grow, and plan for plenty of house-training and training in the first few months.
