1. Bowie Adopt.or Foster
Female · Shepherd / Mixed (short coat) · 14 mi from Lowes Island

Bowie was surrendered to Mutt Love through no fault of her own. She is doing well in play group and is sweet. We will update her bio as we get to know her.
2. Pablo Adopt or Foster
Male · Yorkshire Terrier Yorkie (long coat) · 14 mi from Lowes Island

Pablo is ten years old with a big personality. Looking for someone who is desiring companionship. He is very friendly and sociable. He's been with owner all his life she hopes he would be able to find a new forever home. Pablo loves playing fetch and playing with his toys. He is also very sensitive to the feelings of others and has a sweet, caring nature. He has always been a comforter, the best snuggle buddy, and gives the best kisses. Owner would love to keep Pablo but a change in lifestyle would not allow the owner to.
3. Alice Adopt or Foster
Female · American Foxhound (short coat) · 14 mi from Lowes Island

COMING SOON
Ever wish you could have that perfect hound? Alice is the one for you. She is also affectionately known as
Moaning Myrtle. She has very pronounced and hilarious sighs and moans (not a barker though). Maybe it's someone blocking her sunshine?? Never has there been a more sun loving pup - she loves to spend time in her fosters quiet backyard contemplating nature. Snuggle time is on her favorites list unless her own bed is calling her for a nap. A crate is also an ok choice for her as long as treats are included.
Read more about Alice Adopt or Foster
Now, she is a hound so the scent of something in the woods could get you an extra 10 minutes before moving on.
And loud noises like thunder and fireworks require extra close snuggle time.
Currently she is attending college with foster mom, unofficially the rowing teams mascot. What's better than a teachers pet, lol.
As a young adult, we think about 3-5 years, canine companions are still so much fun for Alice. She engages them in play at their level. Her zoomies are too cute, she is so awkward with those long legs.
Currently she is in foster in NC but hope to see her in Virginia soon.
4. Winnie Adopt or Foster
Female · Hound / Mixed (short coat) · 14 mi from Lowes Island

*FOSTER NEEDED**Oh baby, let's talk Winnie!
Winnie is an 11 week old hound baby that survived being found on the streets at 4-5 weeks old and only 2.2 pounds. She is now a whopping 13 lbs with cute floppy ears and big clumsy feet. And an even cuter little houndy baarrroo!
Great at tug of war and a top wrestler, she keeps up with her foster family in every way.
Jumping and running and playing in the yard are in development. Morning "sniffari" walks in the backyard with foster mom are so much fun.
Speaking of walking, harness manners are coming along nicely! She’d be a great companion at a dog friendly brew pub where she can greet new friends, canine and human- she loves them all!
Winnie would love a playful canine sibling and humans that are active and ready to keep her little brain challenged. She has been the ultimate welcome wagon in her foster home.
Crate trained, sleeps through the night and almost potty trained.
Her new family should be prepared for all that a young puppy needs including a schedule that allows for many potty breaks through the day! Our best guess at a full grown weight is around 50lbs- most of that in her already long legs!

This baby is still in NC waiting for a foster home - so if you’re not ready for a long term commitment and have the time for a puppy, we’d love to hear from you!
5. Harvey Adopt or Foster
Male · Dachshund / Mixed (short coat) · 14 mi from Lowes Island

Coming Soon
Let's talk Harvey and yes- he really is only 22 lbs!
For such a young pup (estimated at about a year old), Harvey is a true romantic. He enjoys long walks, watching rom coms and being serenaded by his human (he’s told us low, crooning love songs are his personal fave!) He is good with kids, friendly with people and loves to play with other dogs. He is however, decidedly not a fan of the rain and likes a warm sweater when it is cold - can you blame him?
Read more about Harvey Adopt or Foster
Harvey is looking for a family that loves to play and loves having a lowrider under their feet. Expect the pitter patter of little feet wherever you go. He would also love to be allowed in bed with you, as his love language is physical touch so expect a good snuggle.
Sound like your type of guy, then apply now!!
6. Willie Adopt or Foster+
Male · Unknown breed (short coat) · 14 mi from Lowes Island

That adorable underbite belongs to the sweetest boy Willie.
At just 8 lbs and approximately 3 years old, he was found wandering the streets of NC, underweight with a gash on his head.
He was scared and exhausted but wanted nothing more than to find a warm lap, snuggles and kind words.
Fellow pups can scare him at first but with a good intro and reassurance he becomes one of the pack.
He is smart and makes quick work of gates and obstacles - perhaps he’s part cat! He really just wants to be close to his humans. However, settling in to his crate at night comes without any fuss. I'm sure if you said he could sleep with you, his heart would be happy.
So far, he is housetrained and does ask to go out.
If you are looking for that little buddy that needs some TLC in return for so much love Willie is your boy.
7. Mickey Adopt or Foster
Male · Basset Hound / Poodle (Standard) / Mixed (medium coat) · 14 mi from Lowes Island

Nothing is better than seeing Mickey smile! This one year old guy had a rough start in life, living with 14 other dogs in 2 rooms of a very dark house.
Getting out came with a big sigh and with some help from his foster sibling, the smiles started. Mickey has been calm and mellow so far and seems to get along with everyone and calm canine friends bring him comfort.
With gentle interactions and tasty treats, humans are also quickly becoming his friends.
The outside world is still new and scary and watching life from the window and a couch is currently his speed. With patience and time, we’re sure he’ll become the brave boy we know is in there. With a crate as his safe space he’s well on his way to being both crate and potty trained. Most new experiences for Mickey take him a minute to figure out but once he does, it's all good and he never looks back!
8. Rebel Adopt or Foster
Male · Beagle / Mixed (short coat) · 14 mi from Lowes Island

A Rebel with a cause! And what a great cause it is- finding a new family of course! This adorable Rebel has sadly found himself without a home and we’re here to help his cause! Rebel is new to Mutts but what we’ve seen so far, he’s a great catch! A solid adult (estimated 6-8’ish) he’s past the young crazy stage and still has lots of pep in his step. In fact this boy LOVES a good sniffy walk to put that Beagle nose to good use. He’s a larger Beagle mix, probably with some hound or basset and has all the best traits of a good ole hound dog! He’s friendly with people and so far has been happy to meet other dogs but hasn’t been overly interested in playing (that could change with time and the right playmate!).
Read more about Rebel Adopt or Foster
He knows sit and is eager to learn more, especially if treats are involved. If you’re looking for a new best bud that’s as happy to chill out on the couch as he is hiking on the trails (on leash of course!), come meet Rebel! at the moment Rebel is staying with a boarding partner and would love to chill in a foster home while he waits for his new family to find him!
9. Pugslie Adopt or Foster
Male · Pug (short coat) · 14 mi from Lowes Island

Meet the great pumpkin Pugslie! What makes him great you ask? Well because he loves to do some of your favorite fall things. Snuggle and be close on cool mornings, walking in leaves that sometimes leads to zoomies, pumpkin patches because there are so many smells and people to meet and how about a brewery while you try some new ciders and he gets to people and pup watch.
Read more about Pugslie Adopt or Foster
He is an active boy and needs plenty of exercise and fun.
Sleeps in his crate but would also love to share your bed.
He gets so excited to see you and can jump so high. He'll need a little help understanding he needs to be a little more gentle and has made great strides with positive feedback so far.
He is under a year, so ready for life and past the puppy stage. And under 25 lbs so the perfect size. He does not chew but loves toys and balls.
He is a good doggie citizens and enjoys another active dog in the home. His intros are bold but it's because he is enthusiastic.
He could also be just as happy with some active humans.
He has come so far from his lonely days at the shelter and really wants a home and humans of his own, could you be it?
10. RoscoeAdopt or Foster
Male · Hound / Mixed (short coat) · 14 mi from Lowes Island

Sweet Roscoe has definitely seen some hard days in his life, as can be seen by some old scars on his face. He went into the shelter as a stray and was diagnosed with heartworm disease. He is currently at one of our vets and will be treated for heartworm and given a thorough exam to determine what medical treatments need to take place to make him feel better. Despite his difficult past he remains a sweet boy and his life from this point forward will be much better. Roscoe is 8 years old and weighs about 56 pounds. A foster home during his treatment would be wonderful.
11. Minnie Adopt
Female · Beagle / Mixed (short coat) · 14 mi from Lowes Island

Sweet Minnie was surrendered to Mutt Love, along with Sam, because circumstances in the home changed and they could no longer provide care for the dogs. Minnie is a very outgoing pup who loves everyone, is good with other dogs, not sure about cats. Minnie is 5 years old and weighs about 32 pounds.
12. Zuni Adopt or Foster
Female · Beagle / Jack Russell Terrier (short coat) · 14 mi from Lowes Island

Zuni was surrendered by her people when they couldn't provide her with the proper care and attention she needed. Zuni is good with other dogs, appears to be house trained, walks well on a leash. She is between 2-3 years old and is currently around 20lbs but we're working on helping her lose some weight.
13. Lil Man Adopt or Foster
Male · Beagle (short coat) · 14 mi from Lowes Island

Lil Man was found as a stray in rural Virginia. He must have had a family as some point as he knows basic tricks like sit and shake paws, but unfortunately no one came to look for him. Lil Man is about one year's old and weighs around 30 pounds. He does well with other dogs, but unknown about kids. We will update his bio as we get to know him
14. Tinsel Adoption Pending
Female · Hound / Mixed (short coat) · 14 mi from Lowes Island

Tinsel aka Tin is the happiest of girls, you will find no one happier out there. She will greet you at the door with a toy and wiggly joy. She is an enthusiastic eater. Her favorites include sticks, leaves and insects. A little sweet and and a little spice type of girl.
She is very interested in her favorite person's food too, it is wise not to let your plate out of your sight. Counter surfing was her sport early on, but as she has been maturing into a young lady she has gained some self control.
Tin is an independent lady when she has to be but mostly enjoys being with her person. If you are outside that is where she wants to be.
Read more about Tinsel Adoption Pending
Tin is kennel trained and sleeps through the night. She walks well on a leash but does like to stop and take in the scenery on occasion. There is so much to see and do during her walks.
She loves other dogs and would do great with an active furry companion and a fenced yard. Doggie play groups would be so much fun for Tin.
She loves every person she meets, she just may need a minute if she is on a leash. She will bark to let everyone know the extra human is there.
Tinsel is one of those beautiful teenage kids looking for her forever family after a rough start.

Name: Dobby
Sex: Female
Estimated Age: About 6 months old (as of 10/27/26)

Weight: About 11-12 lbs (as of 10/27/26)

Housebroken? She’s working on it!
Read more about Dobby
Story: Dobby was found alone in a crate in a D.C. alley on a chilly morning without food, water, or a blanket. She’s being cared for by neighbors and has had her initial vaccines and vet checkup. She has likely spent her entire life confined to the crate and without appropriate nutrition which has resulted in some growth abnormalities in her legs that make walking a little difficult, though she’s getting stronger everyday. She has the sweetest, most affectionate disposition and has demonstrated remarkable resilience and curiosity now that she’s outside of the crate. She lives with two other small dogs and gets along well with them, though she doesn’t have enough strength for more physical play yet. She would thrive in a home with minimal stairs, maximal cuddles, and lots of love.

Story: Meet Summi, a sweet and gentle girl with a goofy boxer streak who is ready to find her forever family! Summi is a devoted shadow who loves nothing more than napping beside you on the couch (or in your lap!). She’s wonderfully calm and cuddly once she’s comfortable, takes treats with a soft mouth, and does great in her crate overnight. On walks she trots along nicely with little pulling and takes time to stop and smell the roses. Her playful side shines in the backyard, where she zooms around, chases tennis balls, and invites you into a joyful game of chase. Summi loves meeting other dogs, so a canine buddy to show her the ropes would be a perfect match. She’s a bit shy as she learns the world, so she’s looking for a patient, loving family who will give her some time to settle in and celebrate every small victory with her. She’s a sweetie and will make her future family very happy!
Summi tested positive for Heartworm. This is a very treatable illness that is common in many shelter dogs coming from the South. Treatment will be paid for by the rescue. For more information on heartworm, visit our blog.

Adopting a dog in Lowes Island
Most rescues ask you to fill in an application, meet the dog, and pay an adoption fee that usually covers spaying or neutering, vaccinations and a microchip. Many are foster-based, so you'll often meet your dog in a volunteer's home rather than a shelter.
Senior dogs are often the calmest companions and the slowest to find homes. If you'd like a settled, affectionate dog, ask the rescues about their older residents.
Puppies go quickly, so if you've fallen for one, contact the rescue soon. Ask how big they're expected to grow, and plan for plenty of house-training and training in the first few months.
