Kids? We think he would do best with older kids, maybe 10 plus, who understand boundaries and know that even the most lovable old man needs a little personal space sometimes! He can also get a bit overstimulated at times and will do best with an understanding and knowledgeable owner. Carmello has plenty of life, love, and squeaky-toy destruction left in him. 9. Curly
Adult · Male · Great Dane / Mixed

Hey there, I’m Curly! I’m a handsome 1-year-old brindle Great Dane weighing right around 80 pounds. Back in early October, a hunter found my brother and me out in the woods when we were very thin and dehydrated. Thankfully, we’ve been on a good feeding schedule ever since and have already put on 10 to 15 pounds! Everyone here says I am a total sweetheart. I'm super gentle with people, take treats nicely from your hand, and walk really well on a leash! I’m currently working on my housetraining, and since I love snacks so much, I'm a big fan of training time. I also get along great with other dogs! Even though I'm a big boy who likes to get vocal and chatty while playing, I'm actually very gentle with my dog friends.

I am all set on my vet care, too! I’m neutered, microchipped, caught up on all my vaccines, and tested negative for heartworm and tick diseases. I would love nothing more than a cozy home and a family to call my own. Come say hi to me soon!

10. Larry
Adult · Male · Great Dane / Mixed

My name is Larry, and I’m a 1-year-old tan Great Dane weighing around 75 pounds! Earlier this month, a kind hunter found my brother and me out in the woods when we were severely underweight and dehydrated. Since then, we’ve been on a steady feeding schedule and have already gained a healthy 10 to 15 pounds! Even after a rough start, I am the sweetest, most gentle big guy. I walk nicely on a leash, take treats very softly from your hand, and love playing with other dogs! I can get pretty vocal when I play, and I also like to do some goofy mouth play, though I’m always gentle and never put any pressure down.

Because I don’t quite realize how big I am yet, I’m currently learning not to jump up when I get excited, and I'm also working on my housetraining (luckily, I'm super treat-motivated!). One funny thing to know about me is that when my brother and I were put in separate outdoor runs after getting neutered, I got bored and showed everyone I can climb a fence! I’m neutered, microchipped, up to date on my shots. I’m so ready to trade my days in the woods for a soft bed and a loving family. Come meet me soon!

Read more about Dobby
Story: Dobby was found alone in a crate in a D.C. alley on a chilly morning without food, water, or a blanket. She’s being cared for by neighbors and has had her initial vaccines and vet checkup. She has likely spent her entire life confined to the crate and without appropriate nutrition which has resulted in some growth abnormalities in her legs that make walking a little difficult, though she’s getting stronger everyday. She has the sweetest, most affectionate disposition and has demonstrated remarkable resilience and curiosity now that she’s outside of the crate. She lives with two other small dogs and gets along well with them, though she doesn’t have enough strength for more physical play yet. She would thrive in a home with minimal stairs, maximal cuddles, and lots of love.

Story: Meet Summi, a sweet and gentle girl with a goofy boxer streak who is ready to find her forever family! Summi is a devoted shadow who loves nothing more than napping beside you on the couch (or in your lap!). She’s wonderfully calm and cuddly once she’s comfortable, takes treats with a soft mouth, and does great in her crate overnight. On walks she trots along nicely with little pulling and takes time to stop and smell the roses. Her playful side shines in the backyard, where she zooms around, chases tennis balls, and invites you into a joyful game of chase. Summi loves meeting other dogs, so a canine buddy to show her the ropes would be a perfect match. She’s a bit shy as she learns the world, so she’s looking for a patient, loving family who will give her some time to settle in and celebrate every small victory with her. She’s a sweetie and will make her future family very happy!

Adult · Female · Terrier / Labrador Retriever / Mixed

Hi, I’m Stassi! Within ten minutes of walking into my foster home, I was already curled up snuggling—my foster mom says I’m by far the cuddliest dog she’s ever met! I’m a 3-year-old black and white Lab/Terrier mix, and at 35 pounds, I’m a great compact size for squeezing onto the couch right next to you.Back at the shelter, the staff always called me "the perfect dog" because I’m so easygoing. I love people, do great with kids, walk nicely on a leash, and I'm already housetrained. I’ve even gone out to busy adoption events and did great in public! I originally came into the shelter with another dog and really enjoy having dog friends around.

19. Demi
Adult · Female · German Shepherd Dog / Mixed

Hi, I’m Demi! I’m a 3-year-old, 70-pound German Shepherd mix who just loves being right in the middle of things. I’m super friendly, great with kids, and an easy passenger in the car. I’ve even gone out to busy adoption events and did great with all the new people and activity! I am very food-motivated, so if you have treats in your hand, you have my full attention. That makes teaching me new things pretty easy! As far as other pets go, I’m not a fan of cats, and I don't like dogs that play super rough or get in my face. I’d be happiest in a cat-free home where I can be your one-and-only, or live alongside a calm, polite dog who respects my space. I’m spayed, microchipped, and fully caught up on my vaccines. If you’re looking for a sweet, social shepherd to take on drives and spoil with treats, come say hi!

20. Paisley
Puppy · Female · Shepherd / Great Pyrenees / Mixed

Hi, I’m Paisley! My sibling and I recently lost our home when our owner couldn't take care of us anymore, so now I’m on the lookout for a family of my own! My name is Paisley, and I’m an 8-month-old (as of October, 2026) Shepherd/Great Pyrenees mix right around 35 pounds.Because I’m still a young girl, I have plenty of fun, goofy puppy spirit left in me, balanced out by a super sweet nature. I love kids, hop right into the car for rides without any fuss, and I’m already about halfway housetrained, so I just need a steady daily routine to help me cross the finish line! My foster mom says I've also been doing great with my crate training and am catching on really well to new things! Right now, she's teaching me "sit," "lay down," and "stay" (where I wait for her to say "free" before I get my treat!), and I'm even learning to wait in my crate until she says the word "release." When I meet new dogs, I tend to be a little shy and submissive for the first few minutes.

I’d love to grow up with a family who has room for a gentle, affectionate pup—come meet me soon!

27. Alice Adopt or Foster
Female · American Foxhound (short coat)

COMING SOON
Ever wish you could have that perfect hound? Alice is the one for you. She is also affectionately known as
Moaning Myrtle. She has very pronounced and hilarious sighs and moans (not a barker though). Maybe it's someone blocking her sunshine?? Never has there been a more sun loving pup - she loves to spend time in her fosters quiet backyard contemplating nature. Snuggle time is on her favorites list unless her own bed is calling her for a nap. A crate is also an ok choice for her as long as treats are included.
Read more about Alice Adopt or Foster
Now, she is a hound so the scent of something in the woods could get you an extra 10 minutes before moving on.
And loud noises like thunder and fireworks require extra close snuggle time.
Currently she is attending college with foster mom, unofficially the rowing teams mascot. What's better than a teachers pet, lol.
As a young adult, we think about 3-5 years, canine companions are still so much fun for Alice. She engages them in play at their level. Her zoomies are too cute, she is so awkward with those long legs.
Currently she is in foster in NC but hope to see her in Virginia soon.
28. Winnie Adopt or Foster
Female · Hound / Mixed (short coat)

*FOSTER NEEDED**Oh baby, let's talk Winnie!
Winnie is an 11 week old hound baby that survived being found on the streets at 4-5 weeks old and only 2.2 pounds. She is now a whopping 13 lbs with cute floppy ears and big clumsy feet. And an even cuter little houndy baarrroo!
Great at tug of war and a top wrestler, she keeps up with her foster family in every way.
Jumping and running and playing in the yard are in development. Morning "sniffari" walks in the backyard with foster mom are so much fun.
Speaking of walking, harness manners are coming along nicely! She’d be a great companion at a dog friendly brew pub where she can greet new friends, canine and human- she loves them all!
Winnie would love a playful canine sibling and humans that are active and ready to keep her little brain challenged. She has been the ultimate welcome wagon in her foster home.
Crate trained, sleeps through the night and almost potty trained.
Her new family should be prepared for all that a young puppy needs including a schedule that allows for many potty breaks through the day! Our best guess at a full grown weight is around 50lbs- most of that in her already long legs!
Read more about Winnie Adopt or Foster
This baby is still in NC waiting for a foster home - so if you’re not ready for a long term commitment and have the time for a puppy, we’d love to hear from you!
29. Harvey Adopt or Foster
Male · Dachshund / Mixed (short coat)

Coming Soon
Let's talk Harvey and yes- he really is only 22 lbs!
For such a young pup (estimated at about a year old), Harvey is a true romantic. He enjoys long walks, watching rom coms and being serenaded by his human (he’s told us low, crooning love songs are his personal fave!) He is good with kids, friendly with people and loves to play with other dogs. He is however, decidedly not a fan of the rain and likes a warm sweater when it is cold - can you blame him?
Read more about Harvey Adopt or Foster
Harvey is looking for a family that loves to play and loves having a lowrider under their feet. Expect the pitter patter of little feet wherever you go. He would also love to be allowed in bed with you, as his love language is physical touch so expect a good snuggle.
Sound like your type of guy, then apply now!!

At just 8 lbs and approximately 3 years old, he was found wandering the streets of NC, underweight with a gash on his head.
He was scared and exhausted but wanted nothing more than to find a warm lap, snuggles and kind words.
Fellow pups can scare him at first but with a good intro and reassurance he becomes one of the pack.
He is smart and makes quick work of gates and obstacles - perhaps he’s part cat! He really just wants to be close to his humans. However, settling in to his crate at night comes without any fuss. I'm sure if you said he could sleep with you, his heart would be happy.
So far, he is housetrained and does ask to go out.
If you are looking for that little buddy that needs some TLC in return for so much love Willie is your boy.

Adopting a dog in Jefferson County
Most rescues ask you to fill in an application, meet the dog, and pay an adoption fee that usually covers spaying or neutering, vaccinations and a microchip. Many are foster-based, so you'll often meet your dog in a volunteer's home rather than a shelter.
Senior dogs are often the calmest companions and the slowest to find homes. If you'd like a settled, affectionate dog, ask the rescues about their older residents.
Puppies go quickly, so if you've fallen for one, contact the rescue soon. Ask how big they're expected to grow, and plan for plenty of house-training and training in the first few months.
