7. Toby
Adult · Male · Shih Tzu / Jack Russell Terrier / Mixed (long coat)

TOBY NEEDS A FOREVER HOME!!!!
Name: Toby Best Guess for Breed: Shitzu / Jack Russell Terrier
Best Guess for Age: 5 years as of Nov 2026 SEX: Male
Approximate Weight: 11.4 lbs
Check out this video of Toby: https://youtube.com/shorts/fnroecSqSvI
Read more about Toby
Gets Along With: Other dogs! We have tested Toby with some of the cats at the shelter, and he did not seem particularly interested in chasing or pouncing on the cat. While this is a positive sign that Toby could live with a cat, he has not done so to our knowledge. If you have cats in your home, we are happy to discuss with you how to best introduce a new pup to your pack. Toby is not recommended for homes with children
Currently Living at: A DC area foster home
Special adoption considerations: Toby is not recommended for homes with children because he can be nippy when afraid or meeting new people.
About Toby: Meet Toby, an adorable 5-year-old Shih Tzu mix who's looking for a second chance at his happily ever after!
Toby was adopted in South Carolina, but just a few weeks later, his world was turned upside down when his adopter suffered an injury that required surgery and could no longer care for him. Through no fault of his own, Toby found himself back in rescue, hoping to find a family to call his own.
Toby is a sweet little guy who just needs a little time to feel comfortable with new people. He can be nervous when first meeting strangers and may nip if he feels scared or overwhelmed. But once he realizes you're a friend, his affectionate personality shines through! Toby warms up quickly and transforms into a loving little cuddle buddy who enjoys being close to his people.
The good news is that Toby gets along great with other dogs! He also did well with cats during his shelter cat test, suggesting he could be a good fit for a home with feline friends.
Because Toby can be fearful and may nip when nervous, he is not recommended for homes with children. He would do best in an adult-only home with patient adopters who understand that some dogs need a little extra time and space to build trust.
Toby has already experienced the disappointment of losing a home, and he's ready for a fresh start. With a little patience, kindness, and plenty of snuggles, this sweet boy will reward his new family with lots of love.
Could you be the one to give Toby the forever home he deserves?
What My Foster Says About Me: We'll update this section when Toby has spent more time with his foster.

Gets Along With: Other dogs! We haven't seen them with cats or kids but we are happy to discuss integration techniques with any potential adopters!
Currently Living at: PUERTO RICO SHELTER. Needs a forever home or a foster to get her ride to DC!!
Special adoption considerations: Dogs from Puerto Rico have a major transition to go through when they arrive and will need humans who are very committed to socialization. We think Lulu would do best with either a resident dog or a family who can make sure he can go on walks regularly with other dogs, visit the dog park, or go to doggie daycare to learn the ropes.
Lulu is Looking For: Her forever family! This very sweet, well-mannered girl is ready to twirl right into the heart of a loving home. She would love leisurely sniffy walks, opportunities to explore her new neighborhood, quality kibble and a soft bed where she can curl up near her favorite people.
She would enjoy plenty of affection, gentle adventures and chances to be included in her family’s daily life. Dog school would help her bond with her new humans while showing them what a clever and polished little lady she is.
Most of all, Lulu is looking for people who will treasure her, keep up with her veterinary care and give her all the love and security she deserves. In exchange, she promises sweetness, lovely manners and loyal companionship. What do you say? Is Lulu ready to take center stage in your home and your heart?

12. River
Adult · Male · Redbone Coonhound

I’m River! I’m a 2-year-old, 44-pound Coonhound/Redbone with the softest eyes and an even softer heart. If you believe in second chances and incredible glow-ups, my story is for you! When I first arrived, I was terrified of the world and really scared of people. It turns out my eyes were hurting me (a condition called entropion), but thanks to a successful corrective surgery, I can finally see comfortably—and I have completely blossomed! Now that I’m feeling good, I’ve discovered just how wonderful people are, and I love making new human and dog friends.I’m already house-trained, neutered, microchipped, and up-to-date on all my vaccinations. It took a little healing, but I'm fully ready to start my next chapter. If you’re looking for a sweet, gentle hound to fill your home with love, I’d love to meet you!

LOUIE NEEDS A FOSTER OR FOREVER HOME!!!!
Name: Louie Best Guess for Breed: Wire-haired terrier/Dachshund
Best Guess for Age: 7 weeks as of 10/28 SEX: male
Estimated Weight (puppies' weights change quickly!): 3 pounds as of 10/28
Gets Along With: Most puppies are in the prime of their socialization window and will do well with other dogs, cats and kids so long as they receive patience and proper training.
Currently Living at: PUERTO RICO SHELTER. Needs a forever home or a foster to get her ride to DC!!
Read more about Louie
Special Adoption Considerations: Puppies under 6 months of age need to have multiple potty breaks/exercise throughout the day. Potential adopters with a standard 8-hour workday must be willing to make arrangements to meet the needs of their puppy.
Dogs from Puerto Rico have a major transition to go through when they arrive and will need humans who are very committed to socialization. We think Lacie would do best with either a resident dog or a family who can make sure he can go on walks regularly with other dogs, visit the dog park, or go to doggie daycare to learn the ropes.
Lacie is Looking For: Hi! Me and my littermates - Lacie, Lolie and Lorenzo, have loved our time in the puppy pile, but we are ready to split up to get our own homes. I'm looking for one where I get to explore the world by the side of my humans, burn all my young-dog energy in romps, make new pup pals - and go to dog school so I can show how super smart I am! In exchange I promise love and loyalty for all my days.
What My Foster Says About Me: Coming soon!
Puppy Vetting Requirements: Lucky Puppies have had their age appropriate vaccines, but may not yet be “fully” vaccinated. It is the adopter’s responsibility to ensure that the remaining puppy vaccines are given at the appropriate time. Please also keep in mind that, until your puppy is fully vaccinated, they are at greater risk for illness than an adult dog.
Due to this puppy’s young age, she/he has not yet been spayed or neutered. As part of the adoption contract, it will be your responsibility, as the adopter, to ensure that this is done no later than 03/10/27. There are NO EXCEPTIONS and NO EXTENSIONS to this date. A non-refundable spay/neuter deposit will be collected if you would like Lucky Dog to pay for this animal to be spayed/neutered at one of our low cost partner vets.
Your new puppy will need to work on their house training and will also need to go to obedience school so they can grow into a well-socialized dog! TO ADOPT: The adoption fee for this puppy is $485, which includes the cost of routine vetting and transport from the shelter. If you are interested in adopting, please complete the Adoption Questionnaire online bit.ly/adoptaluckydog

22. Curly
Adult · Male · Great Dane / Mixed

Hey there, I’m Curly! I’m a handsome 1-year-old brindle Great Dane weighing right around 80 pounds. Back in early October, a hunter found my brother and me out in the woods when we were very thin and dehydrated. Thankfully, we’ve been on a good feeding schedule ever since and have already put on 10 to 15 pounds! Everyone here says I am a total sweetheart. I'm super gentle with people, take treats nicely from your hand, and walk really well on a leash! I’m currently working on my housetraining, and since I love snacks so much, I'm a big fan of training time. I also get along great with other dogs! Even though I'm a big boy who likes to get vocal and chatty while playing, I'm actually very gentle with my dog friends.
Read more about Curly
I am all set on my vet care, too! I’m neutered, microchipped, caught up on all my vaccines, and tested negative for heartworm and tick diseases. I would love nothing more than a cozy home and a family to call my own. Come say hi to me soon!

23. Larry
Adult · Male · Great Dane / Mixed

My name is Larry, and I’m a 1-year-old tan Great Dane weighing around 75 pounds! Earlier this month, a kind hunter found my brother and me out in the woods when we were severely underweight and dehydrated. Since then, we’ve been on a steady feeding schedule and have already gained a healthy 10 to 15 pounds! Even after a rough start, I am the sweetest, most gentle big guy. I walk nicely on a leash, take treats very softly from your hand, and love playing with other dogs! I can get pretty vocal when I play, and I also like to do some goofy mouth play, though I’m always gentle and never put any pressure down.

Because I don’t quite realize how big I am yet, I’m currently learning not to jump up when I get excited, and I'm also working on my housetraining (luckily, I'm super treat-motivated!). One funny thing to know about me is that when my brother and I were put in separate outdoor runs after getting neutered, I got bored and showed everyone I can climb a fence! I’m neutered, microchipped, up to date on my shots. I’m so ready to trade my days in the woods for a soft bed and a loving family. Come meet me soon!

ALEX NEEDS A FOSTER OR FOREVER HOME!!!!
Name: Alex Best Guess for Breed: Husky mix
Best Guess for Age: 2 years SEX: male
Approximate Weight: 46lbs
Read more about Alex
Gets Along With: Other dogs! We have tested Alex with some of the cats at the shelter, and he did not seem particularly interested in chasing or pouncing on the cat. While this is a positive sign that Alex could live with a cat, he has not done so to our knowledge. If you have cats in your home, we are happy to discuss with you how to best introduce a new pup to your pack! We haven't seen him with kids but we are happy to discuss integration techniques with any potential adopters!
Currently Living at: Shelter
Alex is Looking For: His forever home! This cutie wants nothing more than to have her own humans for sniffy walks and romps in parks and all the adventures they can dream up - and for snuggles after a fun day together. Making pup pals along the way would be great too. Quality kibble and a cushy dog bed are on her wish list as well but what she wants most of all is to know where she belongs, to be safe and loved. What do you say? Does he have a spot in your home and your heart?

Adopting a dog in Howard County
Most rescues ask you to fill in an application, meet the dog, and pay an adoption fee that usually covers spaying or neutering, vaccinations and a microchip. Many are foster-based, so you'll often meet your dog in a volunteer's home rather than a shelter.
Senior dogs are often the calmest companions and the slowest to find homes. If you'd like a settled, affectionate dog, ask the rescues about their older residents.
Puppies go quickly, so if you've fallen for one, contact the rescue soon. Ask how big they're expected to grow, and plan for plenty of house-training and training in the first few months.
