1. Charlie

Adult · Poodle (Miniature) (medium coat) · 14 mi from San Antonio

This funny looking guy is CHARLIE, a 15 pound, 3 year old miniature poodle. His colors may look different but it just makes him unique. His curly coat is soft and he takes a bath well and does well at the groomers
CHARLIE was owner surrendered to us by a young lady who could not take care of him any longer. I am told he gets along with cats but I do not have any so I cannot vouch for that.
He is full grown and will not get any bigger. He gets along with the other foster dogs and plays well with everyone. He does like to hang around me but he is also independent, just happy roaming around the house and laying on a doggy bed and watching the activities.
If you are interested in adopting CHARLIE please submit an application on the website below. Feel free to call anytime. Thank you.

4. Luna Belle

Adult (3 years 9 months) · Female · Dachshund (short coat) · 8 mi from San Antonio

Luna Belle is a 3-year-old girl who's been on a bit of a journey to find her forever home. After bouncing between several homes in her young life, she's still learning that not every stranger is a stranger forever. She can be a little wary of new people, especially men, but give this girl a little patience and a chance to feel safe and you might just become her whole world! Her foster mom only needed a day to win her over and now Luna is her shadow, personal cheerleader and professional kiss distributor! She celebrates her foster mom's return from work with happy dances and thinks mealtime is absolutely worth throwing a party over.

Read more about Luna Belle

When she isn't busy being the world's most enthusiastic fan, she's more than happy to curl up for some quality snuggle time. Luna gets along with other small dogs and enjoys having friends to play with, but she's just as content soaking up one-on-one time with her favorite human. She's also working on her potty training as she adjusts from apartment life to living in a house. What Luna wants most is a place to finally call home--a family who understands that trust takes time and is willing to help her discover that new people can bring good things, too. She may need a little extra patience when meeting strangers but the love she gives in return is something special. Could you be the person who shows Luna Belle that she's finally home for good?

I can sleep in a kennel or squish beside my human in the big bed. I love making new friends whether they be human, canine, or feline. 6. Maverick

Adult · Male · Chihuahua / Dachshund (short coat) · 9 mi from San Antonio

Welcome Maverick to CCPAL Foster Program. Maverick is a 4-year-old Chiweenie. He weighs about 19 pounds. He is good on a leash, good in a car. He is potty trained and very loyal to his person. He knows “go for a walk”, “stop”, “leave it”, “It’s the neighbor” and a few other commands. He is in a home and the owner is having some very big financial issues and need to find Maverick a new home. Maverick has some allergies to food and the food that he can is a Duck and Potato kibble. He has some allergies to grass. He has taken Apoquel successfully to handle the allergies. He warms up slowly and is very loyal and bonded once he has bonded. He would be great for a senior couple or single wanting a companion. A nice yard for him to get exercise in would be nice or someone that could have the time to take him on a couple of walks would be great. He isn’t the social butterfly that some dogs are so a matching owner would be the best fit. He would be a great dog to alert you to someone at the door or something being off in the environment. He is good on walks and would help a senior be more active. He is in Texas and can be adopted locally or we can work with one of the wonderful transporters to get him to Washington, Portland, Minnesota, Vermont or all along the East Coast. He could go with children but we would like them to be teens. I think a quieter home would be best for this boy. His adoption fee is $400 and transport is $200. Rhode Island and Massachusetts are not states we adopt to because of the regulations imposed by these states.

8. Chloe Rae

Adult (9 months) · Female · Dachshund / Basset Hound / Mixed (short coat) · 8 mi from San Antonio

Chloe Rae is an 9-month-old puppy who needed a miracle - and got one. After spending over eight agonizing hours trapped in a ditch, a hero rescuer brought her to safety, and arrangements were quickly made to bring her to DDRTX.

Read more about Chloe Rae

Following a long trip from South Texas, Chloe Rae went straight to our vet. Along with her puppy shots, microchip, and heartworm preventative, her X-rays revealed the source of her severe pain and limp: multiple pelvic fractures and a broken femur. To give her the best chance at a pain-free life, she underwent a Femoral Head Osteotomy (FHO) surgery after letting her fractures heal for a month. Her surgery was a success. We know what you're thinking... but we believe she is a "bashund" - basset on the outside, dachshund on the inside! At 22 pounds of pure sweetness, Chloe Rae loves cuddling, exploring, and playing with her foster dog brother (a DDRTX alum!) and foster cat sister. She’s already learned to sit, wait patiently for her meals, walk nicely on a leash, and sleep soundly in her kennel (though she certainly won't turn down a nap in the big bed). She is still working on housetraining. Since she has come into rescue, she was confined with limited movements until surgery and then again while recovering. She was confined for awhile and we had to give her time to heal before worrying about everything else. She has learned so much already!

Bringing a dog home to your cat

Tell the rescue about your cat: their age and how they react to dogs. A dog who has lived calmly with one cat may still want to chase a cat that runs.

Introduce them slowly. Keep them apart for the first few days and swap bedding so they get used to each other's scent, then let them meet with the dog on a leash, rewarding calm behavior.

Make sure the cat can always get somewhere the dog can't reach, like a high shelf or a room behind a baby gate, and keep the litter box and cat food out of the dog's way.
