1. Jake
Adult · Male · Terrier / Mixed (medium coat) · 3 mi from Lake Barcroft

Meet Jake!
This scruffy, happy-go-lucky terrier has quite an incredible story and shows just how resilient dogs can be. Jake lived outdoors in a dirty pen with little shelter for much of his life when a Good Samaritan stepped up to help. With an ice storm approaching, they continued advocating for him until they secured his freedom. Today, Jake is safe, warm, and ready for his next chapter because of them.
Read more about Jake
Jake is a social, confident, people-loving guy who greets the world with enthusiasm. His owner describes him as “jaunty,” and it’s easy to see why. He loves being part of whatever his people are doing, whether that’s yard work, hanging out while you work, going for walks, or heading out on an adventure. He enjoys playing fetch, chewing on one of many favorite toys, and pretending he’s a lap dog.
Jake loves other dogs! He does well as part of a pack, and we really want a playful canine companion in the home for him. If he’s an only dog, a fenced yard to play fetch and doggy playdates would also be a great outlet for him.
This handsome boy is crate-trained, house-trained, walks well on leash, and rides nicely in the car. He’s a budding senior but still an active guy who typically gets two walks a day and needs regular activity and engagement. The good news is that he can settle down with a chew or toy when it’s time to relax.
Jake loves to snuggle. He’ll hop onto the couch beside you, rest his head on your shoulder, and lean in for a hug. He’s a well-mannered guy who sits for treats and doesn’t beg for food. He has a healthy appetite and isn’t picky, although his diet is managed due to a possible food allergy.
Jake is a fun, affectionate companion with plenty of life and love to share. He’s ready for a family that appreciates his cheerful, outgoing personality and will give him the activity, companionship, and structure he needs.

2. Lucky
Adult · Female · Boxer / Mixed (short coat) · 3 mi from Lake Barcroft

Meet Lucky!
This super sweet Boxer mix girl lost her home after her owner passed away and extended family members were unable to take her in. Once a beloved indoor family dog, Lucky found herself abandoned in an overcrowded shelter in York County, SC. With the shelter overwhelmed by multiple large hoarding and neglect cases, they reached out for help. Fortunately, we had a foster home ready, and Lucky is now safe with Worthy Dog Rescue.
Read more about Lucky
Lucky is everything you could want in a companion: sweet, affectionate, easygoing, and happiest when she’s with her people. Her foster describes her as an absolute dream. She’s house-trained, well-mannered, walks nicely on a leash without pulling, rides calmly in the car, and is comfortable staying in her own space when her person leaves. She learns quickly, comes when called, and sits politely for treats without jumping or grabbing.
This girl is a world-class snuggler! She loves sleeping under the covers with her head on your shoulder, giving kisses, leaning into your hands for affection, and rolling over for belly rubs. She’ll happily follow you from room to room just to be near you. When she’s not cuddling, she enjoys walks, chasing balls and squeaky toys, and spending time with her dog buddies. She has a playful side but settles down nicely and is content to relax by your side.
Lucky is currently living with another dog and gets along well with canine companions. She’s curious and appropriate when meeting new dogs, and her easygoing nature could make her a wonderful addition to a home with another friendly dog. She could also thrive as your one and only, soaking up all the love. Her history with cats is unknown, and while she hasn’t been formally tested with children, we believe she could do well with kind, respectful kids.
After losing the family she knew, Lucky deserves a home where she’ll feel safe, loved, and included. If you’re looking for a gentle, affectionate best friend who will happily share your couch, your bed, and pretty much your entire day, Lucky may be your girl!

3. Gunner
Adult · Male · Beagle / German Shorthaired Pointer / Mixed (short coat) · 3 mi from Lake Barcroft

Meet Gunner!
Gunner is a handsome two-year-old boy with striking amber eyes and a fun, goofy personality! He came to us as an owner surrender after his previous adopters, an elderly couple in their 80s, found his energy level more than they could manage.
Read more about Gunner
We think Gunner may be a Beagle/German Shorthaired Pointer mix, and he’s just a great all-around dog. He is currently being fostered by Johanna and living with her four dogs and 2 cats. He enjoys being part of a pack
and loves to play with other dogs. In fact, having a playful canine companion is at the top of his wish list! But when playtime is over, he’s happy to relax on the couch, chew on his toys, or snuggle under the covers.
Gunner has great house manners. He’s completely housebroken, crate trained, and quiet in his crate. He knows sit and down, takes correction well, and is learning to keep all four paws on the ground when greeting people. He’s also respectful of cats and comfortable out and about. He even did great on a recent brewery outing!
Confident, social, and easygoing, Gunner is the kind of dog who fits right into the routine. He enjoys being around people and other animals but doesn’t need to be the center of attention. He does pull a bit on the leash, but his foster mom finds him easy to walk overall, and he’ll improve with practice. Walks are likely new for him.
Gunner’s ideal home would have another playful dog to be his buddy. He can occasionally bark at wildlife or sounds, so a home where that won’t be an issue would be best.
If you’re looking for a fun, well-mannered companion who gets along with dogs and cats and knows how to settle in at home, Gunner could be your guy!
Gunner will be coming to the DC metro area on 11/7.

4. Ziggy
Male · American Staffordshire Terrier / Jack Russell Terrier / Mixed · 3 mi from Lake Barcroft

Meet Ziggy (formerly known as Grits)
This striking boy is as sweet as they come. He has a distinctive look with his tall, slender build, snow-white coat, and adorable spotted ears that stand at attention. ❤️
Ziggy is a 10-month-old bully mix who was found wandering near a grocery store in rural South Carolina. He was fortunate to be rescued by one of our foster moms and has been thriving in foster care ever since, showing what a wonderful companion he can be.
Read more about Ziggy
He’s crate trained, housetrained, and currently lives with another dog. Like any adolescent pup, he still needs supervision and guidance, but he’s smart and picks up household rules and routines quickly.
Ziggy loves to play, snuggle, and play some more, but he knows how to settle down, too. His foster parents work from home, and after his morning potty break, he can nap or entertain himself with toys while they take work calls. A long walk or hike later in the morning helps him stay settled for much of the day. He has the occasional burst of zoomies, as you’d expect from a young dog, but overall, he has a moderate energy level.
He’s social and makes friends easily with people and other dogs, with no dog reactivity. He walks well on leash in quiet areas, but loud traffic, large trucks, and buses are still very frightening for him, making walks in busy areas challenging. He’d do best in a quieter suburban setting. His foster parents are gradually exposing him to new experiences, and he’s building confidence along the way.
Although Ziggy enjoys playing with other dogs, he doesn’t rely on them for entertainment and loves being with his people. We think he could do well as an only dog if the family has a flexible schedule, or with a friendly canine companion who enjoys playing.
He’s making great progress with training, willingly goes into his crate when his foster family leaves, and is learning basic commands like “wait,” "here" and “off.” He has mastered sit. He’s highly motivated by food and toys, which makes training fun. He also loves chasing balls and toys and bringing them right back for another round!
If you’re looking for a joyful, affectionate young dog who enjoys both adventure and snuggle time and is ready to keep learning with his forever family, Ziggy could be the one. He has all the makings of an incredible lifelong companion. Now he just needs a family to call his own. ❤️

5. Wilson
Young · Male · Terrier / Chihuahua / Mixed (short coat) · 3 mi from Lake Barcroft

FOSTER OR ADOPTER NEEDED!
Meet Wilson
This adorable young pup has been patiently waiting for his chance at a new life. Wilson came into rescue after his elderly owner was not able to properly care for him. He’s spent the past few months in his South Carolina foster home learning the ropes of home life, and now he’s ready to make the trip north; he just needs a place to land!
Read more about Wilson
Wilson is everything people love about young dogs: playful, curious, affectionate, smart, and adaptable. And those ears! He approaches life with enthusiasm and is always ready for his next adventure. His foster mom describes him as incredibly smart, entertaining, and full of life in the way that only an adolescent pup can be.
At 9-10 months old, Wilson loves to play, explore, chase balls, solve puzzles, and stay busy. He would thrive with an active family that can provide regular exercise, playtime, and structure. We’d especially love to see him in a home with another young, playful dog who can be his wrestling and running buddy. He enjoys canine companionship and would benefit from having a fun playmate.
Wilson is crate trained, house-trained, and has improved on his leash skills. He may protest briefly when first crated, but settles once he realizes it’s time to relax. His foster mom puts warmed towels in before he goes to bed right now, and he can’t wait to curl up in them...can you blame him?
Like most adolescent pups, Wilson still needs boundaries and oversight. Left to his own devices, he’ll happily investigate coffee tables, towels, clothing, and anything else that catches his attention. Fortunately, he’s very smart, responds well to guidance, and is exactly the age where structure and training make a big difference.
And once he’s had his exercise and the zoomies are over, Wilson’s sweet side really shines. ❤️ He loves to snuggle, burrow under blankets, and curl up with his people. He’s a pup who wants to be close to his family and included in everything you do.
Wilson is looking for a fun, active family who are ready to give him the structure and love he needs to reach his full potential. In return, he’ll bring you laughter, adventure, companionship, and endless entertainment.
Wilson needs a foster or adopter to bring him to town! Foster-to-adopt is an option, too.

6. Shiloh
Young · Female · Dachshund / Terrier / Mixed (medium coat) · 3 mi from Lake Barcroft

Meet Shiloh!
This resourceful little girl was seen running as a stray when some Good Samaritans started feeding her. They soon realized Shiloh had a litter of puppies and reached out to Worthy Dog for help. We connected with Julie, one of our rescue partners, about the puppies, and Shiloh came to us.
Shiloh and her puppies were covered in fleas but otherwise in good health. She is still a young dog herself and is ready for a fresh start with the loving family she deserves.
Read more about Shiloh
Shiloh can be a little shy and nervous when she first meets someone, but it doesn't take long for her to warm up. Once she trusts you, she is incredibly sweet, affectionate, and loves to be held and cuddled. She has done wonderfully with her foster’s dog and enjoys having a pup companion. The two play, snuggle, and even share the dog bed. She would also be happy as an only dog if her people have the time and flexibility for a young pup.
Overall, Shiloh is a medium-level energy pup. She is an active girl who also settles well in the house. She is an excellent leash walker and has been enjoying multiple walks a day with her foster mom. Her quick potty walks are typically just 5 to 10 minutes, with longer walks twice a day. She has also been to the local greenway for 45-minute walks a few times and did great around dogs, people, children, and horses. She would love an owner who enjoys getting out for walks with her.
A condo or townhome may actually be a great fit for Shiloh. She is small, doesn't need a large yard, and is happy going out on leash to potty and exercise. If she does have a yard, it will need to be very securely fenced. Shiloh is surprisingly good at squeezing through small spaces and has slipped through her foster's fence a few times. She has always come back, but her adopters will need to be diligent about preventing an escape. She has also tried to slip out the front door, although she is learning to wait.
Shiloh is house trained and has good house manners. She took to her crate immediately and regularly goes in on her own, although she currently has free run of the house and her foster mom has not felt the need to crate her. Like most young dogs, she has discovered that trash cans and unattended food are worth investigating, so she'll need some supervision and continued training.
FOSTER MOM UPDATE - 10/28/26
"We've learned that Shiloh is an excellent traveler. She has gone on a couple of trips with us... to the mountains and to Columbia to see family. She spent hours in the car and had to get out and walk in strange places. She went to the outside dining area with us and into a store that was dog-friendly. She did great! She’s doing great with meeting new people. She’s still a little nervous at first. And she was good at the vet. No barking at other dogs."
Shiloh is a sweet, playful young dog who loves her people and is quickly learning how good life can be. She would do well with another dog or as an only dog and would love a family ready to give her plenty of walks, attention, and affection.

7. Ivy
Young · Female · Labrador Retriever / Poodle (Standard) / Mixed (medium coat) · 3 mi from Lake Barcroft

Meet Ivy
Ivy came to us as an owner surrender after spending far too much time confined to a crate in a garage, with owners who were not providing the care and attention she needed. She was on the waitlist for the county shelter, which is overwhelmed with too many dogs and not enough resources, so they reached out to Worthy Dog for help.
Ivy is a sweet Labradoodle girl who has come a long way. She came to us with pale gums, vomiting, and very little energy. Our vet confirmed that she was anemic, likely due to fleas and skin infections. She was emaciated and dehydrated and needed small, frequent meals just to get her stabilized.
Read more about Ivy
Her foster mom, Cindy, has done an amazing job nursing her back to health and teaching her house manners. Ivy has gained more than 15 pounds and, while she still has more weight to gain, she finally looks like the healthy, happy dog she was meant to be.
Today, Ivy is a completely different dog. She is house-trained, uses a dog door like a pro, and is surprisingly calm and well-behaved in the house. Most of the time, she is either relaxing or entertaining herself with one of her many toys. She absolutely loves toys and will happily destroy a stuffed animal, so her new family should be prepared to keep a good supply on hand.
Ivy loves other dogs and has done well with every dog she has met, both at home and out on walks, hikes, and trips to the dog park. She loves to play, run, wrestle, and play tug, and she has a great time with her foster sister Libby. She can bark excitedly when she sees another dog, but it is always friendly. She has also been wonderful at the dog park, where she loves meeting both people and dogs.
Ivy is great with people and kids too. She will bark when someone comes to the door or fence, but she is friendly once people come inside. She is incredibly affectionate and wants to be wherever her people are. She is a loyal girl who has bonded closely with her foster mom and loves nothing more than being a couch and TV-watching partner.
She is also a great activity partner. Ivy loves walking, running, and being outside, and she would happily join her family for hikes, adventures, and just about anything else. She enjoys playing in the yard but is generally pretty calm once she is back inside.
FOSTER MOM UPDATE - 10/28/26
"Ivy is probably the most affectionate dog I’ve ever had. She will follow you around the house. All she wants to do is sit by you and be petted. When we first took her in she had no manners and had never been in a house. She has certainly acclimated to home life and has turned out to be a wonderful dog and a wonderful companion. She is very special. My husband absolutely loves her so does everyone who meets her. I think she really would love a companion dog that has a similar energy level as her. She absolutely loves to play and will entertain herself all day playing with Libby.
Ivy is the most affectionate dog we’ve ever had or fostered. She just wants to be with you! She’s a great couch companion and TV watcher, sleeps soundly through the night, and loves belly rubs and her toys. She’s calm in the house when she’s not playing with my dog.
Once she settled in, Ivy was great in the house. She’s completely potty trained, uses the doggy door, and isn’t destructive. She does love to steal socks, though! She’s also very food motivated, which makes her easy to train, but she’s a counter surfer, so keep food out of reach.
Ivy came to us at 32 pounds and now weighs 50. She LOVES walks and hikes, goes to the dog park regularly, and plays wonderfully with other dogs. She’s a great car rider and adventure companion. She’s delightful, goofy, and quirky, and everyone who meets her loves her.
An active family and a playful dog with a similar energy level would be ideal. Ivy and my dog, Libby, have become best friends, and having another dog could help her learn a new routine. She learns quickly and needs daily exercise.
Her leash skills are still a work in progress. She

9. Sadie
Adult · Female · Great Pyrenees / Pointer / Mixed · 3 mi from Lake Barcroft

Meet Sadie!
Just two months ago, Sadie’s entire world was a muddy outdoor pen where she lived in isolation without consistent food or fresh water. Her owner worked and traveled frequently and was gone much of the time, and Sadie was largely an afterthought.
Read more about Sadie
Her only real escape was when kind neighbors would bring her over for playdates with their young dog. Sadie LOVED it. The two dogs would run and play together, and those playdates were her only opportunity to experience freedom, companionship, and what it felt like to simply be a dog. Her neighbors saw how much she needed a better life and advocated for her until they were able to get her into rescue.
Today, Sadie is a very different dog and is thriving in her foster home. She is a sweet, gentle “full-figured” girl who is discovering all the comforts of home. She is a total love bug who wants to be as close to her people as possible. She follows her foster mom everywhere, happily flops over for belly rubs, and wags her big tail whenever she talks to her. Her foster mom says Sadie “does not have a mean bone in her body.”
Sadie is great with other dogs and clearly enjoys having a canine companion. She and her foster sister, Solo, are very comfortable together and love exploring the backyard and chasing toys. She could live with another dog or as an only dog, although her foster mom thinks she really enjoys having a pup buddy in her new home.
Sadie is potty trained and has good house manners. She enjoys car rides, and since she's trimming down, she can get in on her own now. She takes treats and pills gently and has adapted well to home life. New things and loud noises can make her a little nervous, but she recovers well and continues to gain confidence.
FOSTER MOM UPDATE - 10/27/26
"Sadie is the happiest, most well-adjusted dog we've ever fostered. She wants nothing more than to be near her people. She’s affectionate, greets everyone happily, is house-trained, sleeps through the night, and is comfortable staying home alone. She gets along well with other dogs and loves walks, exploring the backyard, and playing with toys."
Sadie still needs to lose about 12–15 pounds after years of limited exercise and an inconsistent diet. An active family ready to give her the exercise, companionship, and love she deserves is the best match.
After spending years with very little freedom, companionship, or attention, Sadie is finally getting to experience what life should have been all along. She is safe, loved, making friends, and learning that home is a pretty wonderful place to be.
Sadie has found her groove, and this is only the beginning. Now she just needs a forever family to show her what the rest of her life can look like.

10. Boomer
Young · Male · Bulldog / American Staffordshire Terrier / Mixed (short coat) · 3 mi from Lake Barcroft

Meet Boomer! This handsome bully boy showed up on a family’s doorstep one winter evening, alone, with no collar, an injured ear, and in need of help. A kind family took him in, brought him to the vet, and tried to find his owner, but no one ever came forward. They decided to foster him, and Boomer spent months in their care, living with their terrier pup and two young adult kids, showing them what a sweet, loyal, and incredibly fun companion he can be.
Read more about Boomer
Boomer came to the DC metro area at the beginning of summer and has been fostered locally, living as an only dog. His foster parents live an active life, and he’s proven to be an adventure buddy extraordinaire. He loves getting out to explore - hiking, riding in the car, going to wineries, hanging at cookouts, or pretty much anywhere his people are headed. He's a dream in the car: quiet, relaxed, and happy to go along for the ride.
He's also wonderful with all people and does great at social gatherings. Boomer is friendly, affectionate, and surprisingly chill for a young pup. He enjoys meeting people and soaking up attention without needing to be the center of the party. At home, he's equally happy curling up on a blanket or pillow, getting head and belly rubs, or relaxing near his people after a good walk. And while he may look like a bit of a tank, his foster family has discovered what a gentle and loving boy he really is.
Boomer has great house manners, is fully housetrained, and is comfortable in his crate, where he often chooses to rest on his own. He has earned free-roam privileges in his foster home and sleeps quietly through the night. He's also a very quiet dog, though you may occasionally hear his signature snore when he's completely relaxed.
Boomer enjoys his daily walks and benefits from regular exercise. A trainer has worked with him on leash skills, and he's made good progress, although he can still pull at times and get excited meeting new dogs on leash. Because he's a strong boy, he'll do best with a confident handler who will continue providing structure and training. He responds very well to redirection.
When it comes to other dogs, Boomer can be selective. He has successfully lived with another dog, and the two became good friends after a gradual introduction. He seems to do particularly well with smaller dogs, but a proper introduction is important to make sure everyone is a good match. He hasn't shown much interest in toys yet, so play is still a work in progress.
Boomer has come a long way from the night he showed up looking for help. He's healthy, neutered, microchipped, and ready for his forever home. Whether you're looking for a hiking buddy, road-trip companion, winery and cookout plus-one, or simply a sweet dog to hang out with at home, Boomer may be your guy.

11. Mj
Adult · Female · Black Labrador Retriever / Mixed (short coat) · 3 mi from Lake Barcroft

Meet MJ! This sweet girl suddenly found herself without a home or family. When her owner walked away, MJ was left behind along with two children. As the family scrambled to care for the kids before their home was foreclosed on, they simply had nowhere for MJ to go.
Thankfully, a compassionate animal lover we've partnered with on several rescues learned about MJ's situation and stepped in to help. She volunteered to pick MJ up in Roanoke and transport her to her new foster home.
MJ is now living with her foster mom, Kim, and former WDR alum, Penny, where she's receiving all the love, care, and TLC she deserves.
Read more about Mj
Like many neglected dogs, MJ is carrying about 20 extra pounds. She had been overfed, under-exercised, and simply existed in the background. But that's all changing now. Since arriving in rescue, MJ has started her wellness journey with Kim. She's enjoying regular walks, a healthier diet, and lots of encouragement as she works toward a healthier weight.
We checked in with Kim for an update:
"This dog is such a special girl. She's incredibly sweet, has a big, happy personality, and loves everyone she meets. She makes friends wherever she goes.
MJ is one of the most affectionate dogs I've ever met. Sometimes I swear she's half human! She's very smart, too, and we've already discovered she knows several commands. She has wonderful house manners, and I haven't felt the need to crate her. She and my dog, Penny, became fast friends and are often found snuggled up together.
She's very gentle and takes treats politely. She is also incredibly expressive and always finds a way to let you know exactly what she's thinking, usually that she'd like to be a little closer to her people! At night, she sleeps right beside you in bed as if she's always belonged there. If you're looking for a dog that wants to be your constant companion, MJ is your girl. If you don't want a dog in your bed...well, she's probably not the dog for you!
We've already worked up to a half-mile walk one evening and three-quarters of a mile the next morning, and she did great. She is strong on leash and likes to pull, so we're working on that, and she's making progress every day."
Every day, MJ is becoming happier, healthier, and more active. She is embracing the love, attention, and life she's always deserved. We can't wait to see this wonderful girl continue to blossom in her forever home.

12. Twix
Adult · Male · American Staffordshire Terrier / Boston Terrier / Mixed (short coat) · 3 mi from Lake Barcroft

Meet Twix! This handsome Bully boy has already overcome so much. Found tied to a pole as a very young pup, Twix was lucky enough to be spotted by a Good Samaritan who took him in and helped him find his way to rescue. Since then, he has shown everyone what a wonderful dog he is...vibrant, affectionate, smart, and eager to be part of a family.
Twix is currently living with Seasoned fosters, Laura and Brian, along with their resident dog, Buddy. Before coming to the DC metro area, he lived happily in a home with four other dogs and has consistently shown that he enjoys canine companionship. He loves being part of a pack.
Read more about Twix
This playful, social guy thrives in an active environment and especially enjoys rough-and-tumble play. He would do best with a medium-energy dog his size or larger who enjoys playing and can match his fun-loving style. That said, Twix is also perfectly capable of entertaining himself and settling down when it’s time to relax. He'd be fine as an only dog too.
FOSTER MOM UPDATE
Laura shared, “Twix is doing great! He settled into our home quickly and has been a joy to have around. He has done a great job acclimating to our dog, Budd,y and enjoys playing chase, tug-of-war, and showing off his goofy personality. When he’s not playing, he’s happy to lounge, entertain himself with toys, and hang out while his foster mom works from home. He’s a sweet boy who loves belly rubs, meeting new people, and occasionally “talking” to let you know what he’s thinking, which is absolutely adorable."
***
Twix is a smart and adaptable pup who is eager to please. He is housetrained, crate-trained, and working on his basic commands. He rides well in the car, enjoys meeting new people and dogs, and has made progress with his leash skills through training. He is very treat-motivated, which makes him a quick learner and a fun dog to train.
We believe Twix will thrive with an active family that appreciates his playful, goofy personality and is committed to providing the structure, exercise, and love he needs. While he enjoys having a canine companion, he could also be happy as the only dog in the home as long as he receives plenty of attention, enrichment, and interaction.
Twix is a wonderful, loving young dog with so much love to give. He’s ready for a lifetime of adventures, belly rubs, playtime, and a family of his own. If you’re looking for a loyal, affectionate, and fun-loving companion, Twix is your pup!

13. Harley
Adult · Female · Beagle (medium coat) · 3 mi from Lake Barcroft

Meet Harley f.n.a Harlow!
This sweet Beagle girl was found as a pregnant stray in rural South Carolina and gave birth to her puppies in a local shelter. Thanks to one of our rescue partners, Harlow and her babies were taken in and given a second chance. Her puppies all found rescue, and this sweet mama girl came into our care. Now it's Harlow's turn to find her forever home.
Harley quickly settled into her new pack, living with a foster mom and dad, four dogs, and a 1-year-old toddler. Like many rescue dogs, she needed a little time to build confidence, trust her people, and learn the rules of home life—but she made progress every day.
Read more about Harley
After making the trip to Northern Virginia in late August, Harley is now being fostered in Stafford with a mom, dad, 5-year-old, and another dog. And we’re happy to report that this sweet girl is 100% kid- and dog-tested!
Harley has a "live and let live" personality and has integrated easily with the other dogs. While she enjoys their company and often chooses to nap beside them, she's independent enough to thrive as an only dog, too. Whether she's part of a pack or the center of your world, Harlow is simply happy to be included.
She is a medium-energy girl who enjoys exploring the outdoors, zooming around the yard, meeting new people, and, above all else, playing with toys. She LOVES her toys. She happily empties the toy basket, entertains herself, and occasionally breaks into hilarious zoomies. Her nose is also almost always down, as you'd expect from a Beagle, and she does best walking with a harness.
Harley does great in her crate. She may whine or give you her very funny "old lady hound" howl when she sees you, but she settles down and relaxes. She's also very food motivated, which is a big help as she's learning more commands and working on her manners.
Like many young dogs who have spent much of their lives living outdoors instead of being pets, Harley is still learning the rules of home life. She's making great progress with housetraining, does well in her crate, and is learning leash skills. She's not destructive, but may chew something if left unattended for longer periods of time. She's also working on jumping up and counter surfing, typical young-dog behaviors that her foster family is helping her correct. She takes direction well.
What stands out most about Harley is her gentle, loving nature. Her foster family describes her as a very sweet, happy girl who has made great progress adjusting to home life. Watching her discover comfort, routine, and affection has been a joy, and she's ready to leave her life as mama behind and become someone's devoted companion.
If you're looking for a kind, gentle Beagle with a playful side who would thrive with an active family willing to continue working on her manners, Harley may be the perfect addition to your family.

14. Poppy
Female · Beagle / Mixed · 3 mi from Lake Barcroft

Meet Poppy!
Some dogs just need another dog to show them the way, and that's exactly who Poppy is.
This sweet young girl was found wandering as a stray in a known dumping area, but thanks to a Good Samaritan, she made her way to Worthy Dog Rescue and has discovered what it means to be safe, loved, and part of a family.
Read more about Poppy
Poppy has blossomed in her foster home, where she's living with another dog, Maggie, and several cats. While she was initially shy and reserved, with the help of her canine companion, she’s gaining confidence every day. Maggie has shown her the ropes, and Poppy now follows her everywhere, squeezes onto the couch or dog bed just to be close to her, and clearly takes comfort in having another dog by her side. Because of this, we feel Poppy will do best in a home with another confident, friendly dog to help her continue building confidence.
Poppy is housetrained, crate trained, and settles well in her crate when her family is away. Like many rescue dogs adjusting to home life, she experienced some separation anxiety during her transition, so her crate has been an important tool in helping her feel safe and secure. Having another dog has also made a big difference, and we believe she'll do best with adopters who have a flexible schedule and can continue building her confidence as she settles into her new home.
She's been great at navigating a busy household, including frequent visits from nurses, physical therapists, and even a steady stream of contractors during a home renovation. She's accepting of visitors, curious about children without being overly excitable, and isn't a jumper.
Once she feels comfortable, Poppy has become more affectionate. She loves curling up on the couch for snuggles, sleeps in bed with her foster family, and is happiest when she's close to her favorite people. Her foster mom says one of her favorite things is watching Poppy gently rest her head on her husband’s knee while relaxing together.
Outdoors is where Poppy's playful side really shines. She’s an active dog who loves walks and exploring new places, happily weaving through the brush, investigating every interesting scent, and chasing squirrels up trees. At home, she'll proudly bring you a tennis ball over and over again for an endless game of fetch, and she enjoys chewing on bones and sturdy toys. She’s been living in a more rural setting and would love an active family that enjoys spending time outside and will include her on walks, hikes, and adventures.
Poppy is still gaining confidence in new situations, so she'll need a patient family willing to give her some time to settle in. The reward is a sweet, loyal companion who forms deep bonds and wants nothing more than to be close to the people and the dog companion she loves.
If you're looking for a gentle, affectionate dog who will thrive with a canine companion and blossom with love, patience, and adventure, Poppy may be the perfect addition to your family.

15. Davis
Male · Pomeranian (long coat) · 3 mi from Lake Barcroft

Meet Davis.
Davis is one of three dogs we rescued from a backyard breeding situation, where he was living in poor conditions with very little human interaction and no veterinary care.
It was clear he was long overdue for medical care. He had painful glaucoma in one eye that required surgical removal and was also missing part of his lower lip from a prior trauma. Since coming into rescue, he's been neutered, received a thorough dental cleaning, and enjoyed a much-needed grooming. He's feeling so much better, looking handsome, and finally getting the care and second chance he deserves.
Read more about Davis
When Davis first arrived in foster care, he was very anxious. He paced constantly, struggled to relax, and didn't trust people. While he formed a bond with his foster dad, he remained fearful of others and needed time, structure, and a change of environment to truly decompress. We sent him to board and train to help him learn the basics, like walking on a leash, so he could safely experience the world around him.
Today, Davis is acclimating well to his local foster home, living with three other small dogs and his foster parents. He's learning what it means to be part of a loving family, still getting comfortable on leash walks, and continuing to build his confidence. He is anxious in new situations, but does connect with his humans when given time. A
social, calm dog buddy would be an ideal pairing for him.
Davis is crate trained, house trained, and getting more confident on leash. He thrives on a consistent routine with regular potty breaks and has no accidents in his crate, showing he's relearned to keep his space clean. He'll do best with a structured introduction to his new home and a gradual transition to full roam privileges. He's shy when meeting new people and has been fearful around the grandson who visits.
Davis is still building confidence outside the home. He's been to the vet, the groomer, and pet stores, and while those experiences were scary for him, he handled them well and continued to move forward. He really needs time to build trust with his person, and that relationship gives him the confidence to navigate new situations. With patience, consistency, and continued positive exposure, we expect his confidence in new environments to keep growing.
Despite everything he's been through, Davis is a resilient little guy who enjoys being petted and is learning that home life can be wonderful. He will thrive with a patient adopter in a calm home who can provide structure and continue building his confidence. He's incredibly sweet and has the cutest little prance you've ever seen.

16. Otis
Adult · Male · Chihuahua / Rat Terrier / Mixed (short coat) · 3 mi from Lake Barcroft

Meet Otis. This sweet little Chihuahua Mix was rescued alongside his buddy Clara Belle after spending much of his life as an outdoor dog in rural South Carolina. Thankfully, his owners surrendered him to a local shelter, giving him the opportunity for the safe, loving life he deserves.
For the past few months, Otis has been living as an indoor dog in foster care with multiple dogs and cats. He's gentle and easygoing with other dogs and adores the cats. He’s a live-and-let-live kind of pup and such a sweet soul.
Read more about Otis
Otis is a naturally social Chihuahua who genuinely loves people. Whether he's greeting visitors at home or charming the staff at the vet's office, he's all tail wags and happy energy. He's house-trained and has excellent house manners. Rather than using a crate, if his foster mom is going for longer periods of time, she leaves her pups in a laundry room equipped with a video camera, comfy beds, toys, water bowls, and all the comforts of home. Like many dogs, he's a little anxious when left alone, but he takes comfort in the company of his canine companions and will settle down.
While Otis walks nicely on leash, he's not looking to be your jogging partner. He prefers leisurely strolls and can be a little timid in unfamiliar environments. His adopters should be mindful that he may be a flight risk during the adjustment period. Once he's comfortable, though, he becomes deeply attached to his people and wants nothing more than to be close to them.
Like many rescue dogs, Otis needs a little time to build trust and gain confidence. Once he feels safe, his sweet, affectionate personality truly shines. He loves all the comforts of home - soft beds, cozy blankets, and warm laps, but he also enjoys road trips and going places with his people. He's a devoted little companion who considers himself a professional lap dog and is happiest curled up next to his favorite person.
His foster mom feels he's pretty perfect:
"He's just the sweetest and my special little guy. He always looks like he has a grin on his face. He loves travel and people-watch, and makes tons of friends wherever he goes. He has more of a thin frame and is not a rough-and-tumble dog. He's definitely gotten more confident since he's been here and will run with the pack and bark at a passing stranger with my other two instigators, but left on his own, he's a pretty laid-back boy."
Note: When Otis came into our care, he tested positive for heartworm and was overdue for a dental. Since then, he's completed heartworm treatment, had a dental, and is now up to date on all veterinary care.
If you're looking for a sweet, affectionate companion who will reward your patience with unwavering loyalty and love, Otis may be the perfect match.

17. Gigi
Adult (8 years 11 months) · Female · Boston Terrier / Miniature Pinscher / Mixed (short coat) · 3 mi from Lake Barcroft

Gigi is a loving, affectionate, and often cuddly dog who wants nothing more than to snuggle next to you all curled up in a ball and to be where you are at all times. She will thrive with a person or family who can give her a bit of room to roam, regular long walks, and attention. Gigi is so calm in her snuggly state that she has even sat in a ball up on someone’s desk, and a recliner or couch or bed or floor are all equally fine to her.
Gigi does well with older children, say 6 and older. She has allowed herself to be dressed up to play with them.
Read more about Gigi
When around other dogs or outside she is an active explorer and can be very enthusiastic about where she wants to go (note: this translates to pulling that can be quite sudden or hard, so she should only be walked be someone experienced who can manage a sudden strong jerk on the leash.)
Gigi has only occasionally made a play for food around the house, mostly when bored, though be aware that she is very capable of thrusting so strongly with her tiny legs that she can make it up to a dining room table! This only happened 1-2 times but I have to share so no one loses their dinner unaware! She can also be an excellent guard dog as she is alert to noises outside and will bark back accordingly; as a result she would probably do better in a neighborhood or community with some space for quiet.
We're still evaluating her around cats.

Adopting a dog in Lake Barcroft
Most rescues ask you to fill in an application, meet the dog, and pay an adoption fee that usually covers spaying or neutering, vaccinations and a microchip. Many are foster-based, so you'll often meet your dog in a volunteer's home rather than a shelter.
Senior dogs are often the calmest companions and the slowest to find homes. If you'd like a settled, affectionate dog, ask the rescues about their older residents.
Puppies go quickly, so if you've fallen for one, contact the rescue soon. Ask how big they're expected to grow, and plan for plenty of house-training and training in the first few months.
