14. Calvin
Senior (9 years 2 months) · Male · Labrador Retriever / Mixed (medium coat) · 11 mi from El Cajon

Forever home wanted, meet handsome, adorable and loving Calvin! Oh, to be a black dog in the shelter means being overlooked, add to that a senior too then you're destined to definitely overstay your welcome! He was originally brought into the shelter on August 10th as a stray and adopted on August 18th. Luckily for Calvin, he was at one of the rural shelters where dogs get some extra time. Calvin was also a volunteer and staff favorite, so he got lots and lots of loving.
Read more about Calvin
Due to housing issues, Calvin was surrendered to the shelter by his owner back on September 12th. The owner was kind enough to leave very helpful information about Calvin that helps us with placement. Calvin is good with all people. He lived with teenagers, small children and babies. He lived with both male and female dogs and cats! Sadly, he mostly lived outside and can be easily scared with loud noises like fireworks and thunder. Calvin seems to walk well on the leash and rides nicely in the car.
Calvin had a tumor like growth on his face that the shelter had removed. They believe it was a lipoma and has recovered nicely. We were able to get Calvin out of the shelter when it was getting close to his time to run out because a foster stepped up for him. He is being fostered with other dogs, so we'll get to know more about him. He just arrived to us on October 22nd, so as we learn more, we'll update his bio.
If you are interested in meeting Calvin, please fill out and application at labradrorsandfriends.org. Calvin is located in Southern California.

MEET SAMPSON, A LITTLE SURVIVOR WITH A BIG HEART! ❤️
Sampson is a handsome 10-pound 3 yr old Poodle mix who has beaten the odds in ways no little puppy should ever have to.
He had owners, yet he was still abandoned on the streets to fend for himself.
What could a 5-month-old puppy have possibly done so wrong to endure this kind of heartbreak?
His old tag said Oreo, but he is now our brave Sampson.
He fought his way through starvation on the streets until he was rescued.
But the unthinkable happened, while out there all alone, he caught distemper.
Read more about Sampson
Distemper takes so many. But Sampson was rescued for a reason, and he was so, so worth fighting for!!
Today, he is truly the happiest, bravest boy we know
Yes, the virus left him with nerve damage in his lower legs. But watching him go from complete lameness to getting up, walking, wobbling, and actually playing... words can’t even describe how much joy that brings to our hearts. Every little wobbly step he takes just shows us there is so much hope for his future.
What is most breathtaking about Sampson is that none of this agony took away his beautiful spirit.
He is so deeply affectionate, trusting, and just desperately wants to be loved.
He walks right up to everyone he sees, ready to give his sweet heart away, and he is so happy just to be held by anyone willing to wrap their arms around him. Everyone who met him today absolutely fell in love with him!
After everything this sweet little boy has endured, I know in my heart his special person is out there. ❤️
He deserves a safe, soft, loving home where someone will cherish him, protect him, and hold him tight for the rest of his life.
Sampson has survived the hard part. Now, he just needs someone to love him forever.
If Sampson has touched your heart, please fill out an adoption application at tlck9rescue.org

Meet Heath and Hugo! These brothers are Standard Poodles around 4 months old. Their mama was a golden colored Poodle and their dad was also black. These boys are happy, social, and very playful. They are working on their manners around other dogs and their basic commands. Hugo is looking for a family that understands the time, patience, and energy needed to raise a young pup. We require all puppy adopters to provide training that includes: house training, basic training, leash training, and socialization. Additionally, this cutie is going to need proper exercise, mental stimulation, and your attention and love to grow up to be the best companion.

29. Canela
Puppy (3 months 4 days) · Female · Labrador Retriever / Mixed (medium coat) · 11 mi from El Cajon

Meet Canela!
Canela found herself at the San Jacinto shelter. You might think a cute puppy would be adopted quickly, but Canela has a bony lump on her head that the vet believes may be a birth defect. Two of her siblings, who were adopted separately, also had smaller lumps on their heads.
Despite being just a puppy, Canela was red-listed and at risk. Thankfully, a foster stepped up, and we were able to get this sweet girl to safety!
Read more about Canela
Canela is a scared little girl who is still learning that the world isn’t such a scary place. Loud noises and fast movements frighten her, so she’ll need a patient family willing to help her socialize, build confidence, and learn to trust.
She’s currently fostered with three large dogs and is doing well with them! She loves playing outside with her canine foster siblings and follows her foster mom around the yard. When she’s not outside enjoying some playtime, you’ll find her searching for a cozy spot inside the house to curl up and relax.
Her foster siblings are also helping show her that receiving love and affection from her foster mom is a wonderful thing!
We believe Canela would do best in a home with another confident dog who can help continue to show her that the world isn’t so scary.
Canela needs someone willing to give her the time, patience, and encouragement she needs to blossom. Could that be you?
If you’re interested in giving Canela the loving home she deserves, please submit an adoption application at www.labradorsandfriends.org.
Canela is located in Southern California.

30. Robby
Adult (3 years 6 months) · Male · Golden Retriever / Great Pyrenees / Mixed (long coat) · 12 mi from El Cajon

Looking to adopt a 'special' case? Thank goodness!Robby (fka Robin) came to us from Ensenada (baja) the first week of October and is currently staying at casa de ARWOB and living among several other adoptable rescue dogs and cats. Robby is a huge baja mutt which means he looks like a Golden, oversized Spaniel and some say Pyr. The likelyhood of a Pyr runnign the streets is minimal but we have not done (and will not be doing) a DNA test so these breeds are just from aesthetics and a bit on personality. Robby was rescued by someone who lives in Ensenada, Mexico back in february. He was skin and bones, was unable to move during a rainy day as he was under an embackment it took a bit to secure him as he was very weak and getting down to him and up was an ordeal for the good sams but they knew this dog needed help and were not going to leave without him.
Read more about Robby
Euthanasia or saving it did not matter, he needed help. Once secured took him to a vet who weigh him at only 20kgs (very thin and almost no muscle mass) the rescuers kept him and helped him recover. Fast fwd months they seeked help to adopt him out or move him to a group with no luck. An ARWOB rescue partner heard of his plea and helped get him going ei neuter etc in september and then he came to San Diego where he landed at casa de ARWOB. What we realized is this pup is VERY heavy. Not sure if its lack of excercise where he was or too much "love" and over conpensated for his lack of nutrition before. When Robin (now called Robby) arrived san diego he was 69 pounds. As of late October he is now 65 pounds. Measured meals and just running/walking mostly around the yard with fellow arwob dog friends is really getting him down and we have noticed a significant improvemnt on his movement. At first we did not know if he was an older dog or perhaps just obese. We can say this guy can walk and use stairs no problem, he will play around the yard with his dog friends and LOVES to be part of a pack of humans or dogs. However, we believe he likely has an old injury (ies) either his hips, hind legs or knees. We are debating taking xrays as whatever it is it will NOT be fixable. The people who helped this dog likely never noticed maybe back then at a thin size and recovering he moved more and now that he is a big boy and is slowly loosing weight perhaps we will see an increase in his activity BUT for now, we do NOT see this guy as somone who can go on miles a day on a walk. MAYBE one mile or just whatever amount of walk/movement he wants in the yard interacting with dogs but if you are looking for long distance or high intensity movement partner this guy is not going to be it. Ideally an easy going home who wants an easy going companion would be the best for him. IF we do xrays likely will be done early November so we can have more info for potential adopters should this movement be a factor for someone to choose him. Robby is a silly goofy, easy going, gentle dog who is a really good dog and human companion. He has zero issues with dogs. He is not a socialitite with people and its a slow warming up but from the interactions we have seen within a few minutes of walking or saying hi he warms up to humans, just do not expect waggy tail approaching for pets from him when he first meets you...once you are his human either foster or adopter then YES he is all waggy tails and lovely boy who seeks human attention without an iota of separation anxiety. He is doing great on potty and crate training. In ensenada he was in a home with cats, we don't know how 'good' he was with them. At casa de ARWOB he does not interact with cats on his own. We think a cat who holds its ground and is NOT a scary cat ei runs from him will be fine. He seems safe BUT he can also really observe him so we can't say completely if he is going to be well paired with cats. If anyone interested in him has cats, we are happy to expose him more and observe him more with cats to see if he is chill or not. It will also be very cat pers

Our goal is to find the right match for each pooch based on lifestyle, energy level, exercise regime, environment and living situation. To ensure we find a great match for each pup, the process includes: 1) Filling out an Adoption Application. 2) a play date with your furry friend, 3) a home check of the potential adopter, 4) an adoption contract, 5) an adoption fee. The adoption fees include spay/neuter, up-to-date shots, rabies vaccination, microchip & microchip registration, de-worming and the benefit of getting a pooch who has been living in a stable and loving environment. How to adopt from Baja Animal Sanctuary
After viewing our adoptable dogs, the next step would be to submit an application www.bajaanimalsanctuary.org on the dog you're interested in adopting. Once the application is received, it will be reviewed and a volunteer will contact you. We will then make arrangements for you to meet the dog at one of our next Adoption Events. Or, you may drive to our shelter located in Rosarito, Mexico (appointment is required). If after meeting the dog, and it is determined the dog is the right fit, you will begin the adoption as a two-week foster. If after the two weeks, you decide you'd like to keep your new furry friend, a volunteer will come out to your home and finalize the adoption. If for whatever reason during the two weeks you realize the dog is not the right fit, you will be able to bring the dog back to the next Adoption Event and our Business Office will mail you a full refund of the adoption fee. Adoption Fee: $275.00 All of our dogs are spayed/neutered, current on their vaccines, and dewormed prior to being put up for adoption. We are currently receiving a high volume of applications, and while we make every effort to respond to all applicants please understand if you don't hear back from us. We conduct a home check (virtual or in-person) and arrange a meet-and-greet when appropriate. Current adoption fees are $500 for puppies (newborn to 1 year), $300 for adult dogs (1–8 years), $250 for senior dogs (8+ years), and $500 for purebred dogs of any age. How to adopt from Baja Dog Rescue
How the adoption process works Fill out the adoption questionnaire located below and submit it to us. Once we have reviewed/approved your application, we will contact you to arrange a "Meet & Greet". Many of our dogs are in private volunteer foster homes. We must schedule a one-on-one "Meet & Greet" appointment with each individual dog. It takes time to schedule these appointments, however we do have a standard weekly adoption event at local Petco's, where we show dogs for adoption. We can arrange to have the foster's bring the dog to the Petco. This is the easiest way to set up a "Meet & Greet". These adoptions events are usually Saturday or Sunday. When going to a "Meet & Greet", please make sure you take any family members and other dogs to see how the initial introduction goes. That makes the entry into the new home easier for the dog and for you. How it Works: If your "Meet & Greet" goes well, you will complete an adoption contract at the appointment and can take the dog home then. We ask for a suggested adoption donation* to help us cover spay/neutering, shots, medical treatment, food, and supplies. Then you and your new best friend live happily ever after. It's as simple as that! *Baja Dog Rescue is a 501c(3) non-profit and all donations go directly to the care of our dogs and are 100% tax deductible. The suggested adoption donations only partially cover the cost of the expenses involved in the temporary care and adoption of our dogs. What if the adoption doesn't

Adopting a dog in El Cajon
Most rescues ask you to fill in an application, meet the dog, and pay an adoption fee that usually covers spaying or neutering, vaccinations and a microchip. Many are foster-based, so you'll often meet your dog in a volunteer's home rather than a shelter.
Senior dogs are often the calmest companions and the slowest to find homes. If you'd like a settled, affectionate dog, ask the rescues about their older residents.
Puppies go quickly, so if you've fallen for one, contact the rescue soon. Ask how big they're expected to grow, and plan for plenty of house-training and training in the first few months.
