3. Big Al

Adult (6 years 2 months) · Male · Poodle (Standard) · 6 mi from Irondequoit

Meet Big Al!

The 65-Pound Best Friend You Didn't Know You Needed!

Born August 12, 2020, Al is a 6-year-old Standard Poodle with a BIG heart of gold. And we mean BIG! This handsome guy is currently 65 pounds of lean poodle perfection and is working on putting on a little weight.

Al has never met a stranger. In fact, we're not entirely sure he understands the concept of personal space.

Everyone is his friend. EVERYONE.

The dog snarling at him from across the room? Friend!

The cat who's hissed at him 20 times and finally resorted to throwing paws? Still a friend!

The squirrel across the road? BEST FRIEND MATERIAL!

Read more about Big Al

Al is socially blind and unintentionally pushy. He takes friendship VERY seriously and believes that if he looks at you, you are now personally responsible for being his buddy until someone else comes along. Pets, attention, and affection are always on his agenda! Be prepared, he’s a BIG leaner

A little more about Al:

Dog friendly, including small dogs

Cat friendly

Kid friendly

Potty trained

Kennel trained

Ball enthusiast…when the spirit moves him

Gentle with his toys (more of a casual nibbler than a destroyer)

Low-energy overall and an oversized lapdog at heart

Loves attention and affection

Currently does great with professional grooming

Bed HOG

Al does have a few quirks and things his future family should know:

He's a bit of a puller on walks and will need a head halter or martingale collar while you continue working on that

He's an alert barker, especially at loud noises or people passing his gate. He'd really like them to come over and pet him, obviously!

Counter surfing is one of his hobbies. Keep those snacks out of reach!

He may occasionally bounce around and attempt to initiate a game of tag with a squirrel. The squirrel is generally not interested.

Let's talk Poodle maintenance!

Al is a Standard Poodle, and that gorgeous coat doesn't maintain itself. His hair grows FAST, and he will need professional grooming approximately every month to keep his coat clean, healthy, and mat-free, along with regular nail care.

He currently does wonderfully with professional grooming, so haircuts and nail trims aren't an issue for him. However, his future family needs to be prepared to either learn to groom him at home or budget approximately $80–$200 per month for professional grooming.

If you're looking for a sweet, goofy, affectionate companion who believes everyone he meets should immediately become part of his social circle, Al might just be your guy!

4. Cole

Young · Male · Shepherd / Mixed · 70 mi from Irondequoit

Introducing Cole — A Little Mystery, a Lot to Love! We’re not exactly sure what breeds went into making Cole, but whatever the mix, the result is one handsome guy complete with nicely situated spotted and brindle markings on his mostly black coat. Cole is a bigger guy, on the border of medium and large, with a wonderfully gentle approach to life. Pulling on the leash? Not his style! He prefers to take his time, exploring, sniffing, and ambling along, with frequent check-ins to make sure his human is still enjoying the stroll. He’s curious about dogs he passes but remains friendly and relaxed.

Young · Male · Terrier / Mixed · 70 mi from Irondequoit

Introducing Jason — A Sweetheart with a Hunter’s Heart!Handsome Jason is a sweet, young, medium-sized hound with a lovable personality and a nose that knows a thing or two about adventure. The majority of the time, Jason is a pleasant walking companion who doesn’t pull on the leash; but let him catch an interesting scent or spot a woodland critter, and suddenly his inner hunting dog spirit springs to life! His excitement is contagious, and he may do a little bouncing and dancing as he dreams of giving chase. Fortunately, his smaller size makes him quite manageable.Jason is especially animated when he’s near the road, so he’ll appreciate a watchful handler who can help him navigate all that excitement safely. With his handsome hound looks, sweet disposition, and enthusiastic curiosity about the world, Jason is a delightful character just waiting for someone to share his adventures.

6. Winston

Puppy (4 months 4 days) · Male · Shepherd / Mixed · 72 mi from Irondequoit

Everyone, meet Winston!
Winston is a 4-month-old Shepherd/Black Mouth Cur mix who made the journey all the way from Texas in hopes of finding his forever family. Sadly, this sweet boy found himself on the euthanasia list at just 12 weeks old. Thankfully, he was given a second chance at life, and now he’s ready to find the loving family he deserves! ❤️
Winston is a happy-go-lucky guy who is full of life, love, and puppy energy! He currently lives with two foster canine siblings and two foster feline siblings, and he absolutely loves them all! He enjoys playing with his foster siblings but is also perfectly happy entertaining himself with his favorite stuffed bat toy.
This friendly little guy is looking for a family to call his own — one that will love him unconditionally, spoil him rotten, and help him grow into the amazing dog he’s meant to be!
Winston is already making great progress with potty training, learning to love his crate, and practicing his good manners.

Read more about Winston

He’s a smart boy who is eager to learn and ready to start his next chapter with a family of his own!
Could Winston be the missing piece to your family? If you’re ready to give this sweet boy the forever home he’s been waiting for, please fill out an adoption application, and we’ll be in touch!
Let’s help Winston find his happily ever after! ❤️
Apply today at www.sadiesrescue.org
Please keep in mind there are many factors to consider when choosing the right match for a puppy, so an application cannot guarantee adoption. Nor do we work on a "first come first served" basis, but rather strive to find the best match for the personality of each dog. At the time of adoption, the puppy will be current on vaccinations and deworming. He or she will come with a pre-scheduled appointment at our vet to be spayed or neutered that the adopter is obligated to keep. The puppy will also be microchipped at this time. Please consider the time and effort it takes to raise a puppy. Foster puppies are typically NOT potty trained. They require time and patience from their adopter. If you are NOT serious about adoption and have not discussed the possiblility of adding a new canine to your home with ALL live in family members, DO NOT APPLY. Volunteers spend countless hours reviewing applications, calling references, and scheduling home visits. Please be sure you are ready to add a puppy to your home BEFORE applying. Our puppy adoption fee is $400 plus a $50 training deposit, which is refunded to the adopter when he or she provides proof of having completed a basic obedience class with their puppy. As part of our adoption process, references both personal and veterinarian will be checked. Sadie's also requires a home visit before we adopt any of our dogs out; therefore we only adopt to our local WNY region.

7. Jax Allen

Adult (9 years 6 months) · Male · Australian Shepherd (long coat) · 78 mi from Irondequoit

Jax was born around April 15 2017 and weighs about 55 pounds. Jax is with us because his owner could no longer care for him. Jax rides well in the car and walks ok on a leash. Jax has been around children of all ages, cats, and dogs and does well with everyone. Jax has a lot of energy and is very smart! We will be looking for a home that can meet both his mental and physical exercise needs since his world is fast and fun! He is a smart boy and learned the dog door quickly, but for some reason he thought he had to BURST through it instead of walk. It's just how Jax rolls and he surely doesn't act his age. He has learned how to swim and LOVES it even though he is still a bit splashy with his front legs. He is a very funny boy. We've also discovered that he loves to play fetch and does bring the toy or ball back for you to throw again. The Adoption Fee for this dog is $450.00
Adoptions fees vary based on adoptability. In general our fees include spay/neuter, all age appropriate vaccines, Home Again micro-chipping & registration, worming & flea control - a "complete" pet. We accept CASH or Visa/Mastercard ONLY.

Joyful Rescues has no funding except for our adoption fees and miscellaneous donations. Pet care and vet bills are expensive - you must be ready to take on this financial (as well as emotional) responsibility. YOU MUST BE AT LEAST 25 YEARS OF AGE TO ADOPT A DOG FROM JOYFUL RESCUES

9. Francine

Adult (1 year 1 month) · Female · Black Labrador Retriever / Mixed (short coat) · 72 mi from Irondequoit

Meet Francine!
Regal beauty or cartoon character? We’re still trying to decide.
Francine is a gorgeous 58 pound black Lab/retriever type girl with long legs, an extra long nose, enormous paws and some very distinctive features. Her foster family suspects there may be a little German Shepherd in there somewhere... although based on those legs, we haven't completely ruled out horse. Francine has been in her foster home for a couple weeks and more of her personality comes out every day. She is sweet, silly, playful and has quickly settled into life with her foster family. One of Francine’s absolute favorite activities is splashing in her water bowl. Drinking from it is apparently only part of its intended purpose. If she can get some of the water onto the kitchen floor in the process, even better. She is doing wonderfully with potty training and has had no trouble understanding that business belongs outside. She is also learning the ropes of crate training and making progress, although confinement isn't exactly her favorite thing yet. She’s a clever girl, so her foster family continues to work on making her crate a comfortable, positive place.
Francine loves chewing on her chew bones and especially loves playing with her foster brother, Zuul, a pittie. The two have become great playmates, and when she's finished romping around, Francine is perfectly happy to curl up on the couch alongside him. And then there's the Francine flop. She knows how to sit, but when affection is involved, sitting frequently turns into slowly sliding herself all the way down until she's sprawled on the floor waiting to be loved. Kitchen, living room, outside... location doesn't seem to matter. At 58 pounds, Francine is currently underweight and has some filling out to do. Between those big paws, long legs and lengthy frame, she's going to be a substantial girl once she reaches a healthy weight.

Read more about Francine

Francine is spayed, potty trained, dog friendly in her foster home and learning more about home life every day. She has plenty of puppy like playfulness wrapped up in one very long, very lovable and wonderfully goofy package.

If you're looking for a beautiful girl who can make you laugh, splash your kitchen floor, play hard and then flop down beside you, Francine might just be your girl.

13. Nanook

Senior · Male · Labrador Retriever / Husky / Mixed · 70 mi from Irondequoit

From Nanook’s current foster family:Nanook is a 9-year-old husky/shepherd/lab mix VERY deserving of a loving retirement home and comfy couch. He has come into our home from an uncertain past but has proven to be sweet and calm. His eye area is still healing from a previous injury. He walks great on a leash and rides well in a car.We started him in a kennel when we weren't home, but we quickly realized he wasn't going to destroy anything so once he settles in he is safe to be trusted out of a kennel. He is great with his foster brother, they mostly ignore each other. Like a true sibling he just wants equal attention.

He sometimes gets excited when he meets other dogs or takes a minute to warm up. We've seen no food aggression at feeding times. Nanook is very good with our child — gentle and loves to cuddle on her. We have seen no bad triggers with any kind of a person for him. Needs a home that understands husky behavior and noises, such as the-old-man-grumbles and the cute mini-howls when he wants something. Will need long-term medicine for his eye and anal fissures. Takes pills and receives eye drops without any problems. He is a perfect blend of an old man dog with bouts of a happy and playful soul!To set up a meet & greet or ask questions about Nanook, you can contact HumaneCNY at (315) 457-8762 or info@humanecny.org; or you can begin the adoption process for this great dog right now by filling out an application on our website, www.humanecny.org.Contact HumaneCNY if interested in this animal. 18. Goose

Young (1 year 2 months) · Male · American Pit Bull Terrier / Mixed (short coat) · 56 mi from Irondequoit

Meet Goose!

Goose is a happy-go-lucky, handsome boy with a big personality and an even bigger heart! This lovable guy is friendly with everyone he meets and has a wonderful, affectionate nature.

Goose is dog-friendly, but because of his young age and enthusiastic play style, he would do best in a home without small dogs or cats. Goose has had a difficult experience in the past and was previously attacked by another dog, so dog introductions should be slow, thoughtful, and allow him time to feel comfortable. With patience and proper introductions, Goose has shown that he can enjoy the company of canine friends.

Read more about Goose

Goose came to us as a stray and appears to have missed out on some basic training, but he is eager to learn! He is highly motivated by snacks. His leash skills are also a work in progress—there is just so much in the world for Goose to explore! With consistency and guidance, he is learning to focus on his person and become the best walking buddy he can be.

Because Goose is an active, curious young dog, he would do best in a home with a secure fenced-in yard where he can safely burn off energy, play, and enjoy some outdoor time. A family who can provide him with exercise, structure, and continued training will help Goose become the amazing companion we know he can be.

After some activity and adventure, Goose is happiest relaxing with his people and soaking up some well-earned snuggles. His sweet personality, goofy charm, and loving nature make him a wonderful companion for a family ready to help him continue growing.

Large dogs need room to stretch out and plenty of exercise: at least one good walk a day, and a secure yard is a bonus. Check your lease too, as some landlords limit the size or breed of dog.

Start training from day one. A big dog who walks nicely on a leash and doesn't jump up is a pleasure to live with, and many rescues can recommend a local trainer.
